I want to know this because they're really cheap and it seems like an easy option. I know 3DS games don't take up that much space but I only use 32GB right now, which is a shame since 64GB is so cheap.

"The New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, and New Nintendo 2DS XL are compatible with microSD cards up to 2 GB in size, and microSDHC cards of 4 GB and larger up to 32 GB in size. All other SD Card types are not considered compatible.
SDXC and microSDXC cards are not considered compatible."

People say you can format them to FAT32 to get them to work.

Ah, well, I don't know about that, @Tanooki12 .... If you want to try that, I don't see how it'd hurt

Follow Nintendo support instruction on how to format your card first before asking here.

The supported size is up to 32GB on 3DS XL units. You can't make it bigger by using a larger card. Only the Switch can do that up to 2tb AFAIK.
