Can't transfer game saves to a new switch, if users are not linked to a Nintendo account?

What's going on? I'm just using bluetooth, from switch to switch. I don't need cloud support or Nintendo infrastructure. How does Nintendo think I'm cheating them, that they block this ability? I should be able to have a few game saves without more than two nintendo accounts.

I already transferred my two MAIN users that were linked to Nintendo accounts. So, that's fine. But over time, I made a couple other Switch users for some extra save files for Mario Odyssey & BotW. The Switch won't let me transfer without another nintendo account. What a bunch a baloney.

I couldn't find this issue addressed on the nintendo support site. Did anyone else know this?

When talking to Nintendo support, I had to ask the rep the question 3 times before they understood what I was asking. This may not be a commonly asked question.

Feel free to tell me how many years ago, you discovered this.😉

*edit: You also cannot backup your games to PC and paste them back on onto the card (formatted to the new console). I totally thought you could. If you could in the past, I think an update prevents it now. Correct me if I'm wrong.

@WoomyNNYes Presumably the didn't say why it was a feature? Probably some obscure reason like stopping kids bullying each other into transferring their Pokémon saves or something like that.

Not ideal, but you could just create a throwaway email address and link the account to that.

I had exactly the same issue with my Switch OLED. I had an original switch that had my daughters user profiles, that do not have Nintendo accounts. I cannot get these user profiles over to the OLED. This is still unresolved.

Another issue is that when you share Switch’s with the same user account, both must be connected to internet to play any game (the connection is needed because the Switch is required to check if your 2nd Switch is playing the game)
If you are travelling with no internet connection, does that mean you can’t play the games?

They had lots of trouble with save spamming on the Wii U, so instead of fixing it properly they've just severely restricted any save copying on the Switch.

Can't you just create new accounts, then link them to those profiles and transfer?

@chardir That may be a good point, Nintendo trying to thwart spamming/hacking with the Switch system.

The game save files on the third and fourth switch users aren't important enough to me to warrant making new email accounts. Maybe my annoyance toward making multple junk email accounts is outdated, or not really warranted, but that's where I'm at.

Until the next time your nieces come round and realise you haven't got their save files anymore 😉

@dmcc0 😃 Ahh, but my second Nintendo account IS their main Mario Odyssey save! Which is the only save they may have cared about. Otherwise, they always played on my Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon profile because, I have all the stuff unlocked. Good one though, dmcc0! That, and they are getting an OLED on Christmas. They didn't already have a Switch. I think they're going to be excited to start fresh with their very own Switch, and start a new playthrough of Odyssey.

@WoomyNNYes Sounds like a good excuse to start over 😃 If the users on their new Switch are going to be linked to a Nintendo account, they could also link the users on your old Switch to their new accounts if they were desperate for those saves.

@SwitchForce Before this thread, did you know you cant' transfer Switch-user-game-saves if they aren't linked to a Nintendo account? I figured I could, because I have both consoles & I'm just using bluetooth. Makes me wonder if it's always been like that with the Switch.

Also, you can't transfer games via microSD & PC. I thought I could copy my Nintendo folder(games, screenshots, video clips) to PC, then reformat the card with the new switch, then copy the Nintendo folder back onto the microSD card. You could with the 3DS. Anyway, the only thing you can carry over to the new Switch is the Album folder of screenshots & clips. That worked.

So, I learned two things yesterday.😉
