We bought a switch and a few games for my son Christmas.
Thought about buying a few Amiibo’s but are a little hesitant. We were really burned by the skylander games a few years ago and not sure how much we want to invest if at all.
The game’s we currently have are
Minecraft
Diablo 3
Breath of the wild
Mario Kart
DC villains
Civilization 6
We are not really looking for extra cosmetics more in the line of additional items or tangible benefits.
Some games have cool little benefits, so I'd say it depends from game to game. Just google each game you have to see what amiibo benefits they may have and decide from there.
@Ruthless4u as unlocks for in game rewards I would say no they aren't. They do very little in majority of games. As straight collectables I would say yes. Some of them are very well made and detailed. My kids enjoy collecting them but very rarely use them for games.
Just stick to ones that unlock content that you may be interested in. The Super Mario Odyssey wedding amiibo are really cute and are handy for regular in-game use and Super Mario character amiibo generally can be used with most games that support amiibo.
Otherwise, no, it's best to avoid them and I say this as somebody with every single figurine. It's a trap. Let my folly serve as a lesson to all!
I've been regularly disappointed by how scarcely Nintendo ever makes any use of them.
With those games, the only one that would benefit from amiibo is Breath of the Wild. Using Zelda themed amiibo, crates and food drop from the sky to help you during the game. For MK8, the only thing certain amiibo do is give a new racing suit. Boring. Google search each game to learn which games have which amiibo functionality.
Would I be able to get away with saying nice-looking amiibo cards from ebay/etsy are a possible alternative? It seems ludicrous you have to buy the figure to get the DLC (even though they're nice looking). Amiibo work buy using an NFC chip in the base, and that's what is inside the cards. I can clear this comment if it strays too far. @Eel Eel-money?
@Ruthless4u BOTW becomes a bit easier if you have amiibo. Zelda amiibo get you some crafting items, weapons, and classic Link clothes. Non-Zelda amiibo get you crafting items.
Other games where my amiibo have really proved useful are Bayonetta 2 where each amiibo nets you money and items and Super Mario Odyssey is MUCH easier with a Peach amiibo (you can scan her as many times as you want to heal Mario. Great for boss battles.)
Indeed, @Ruthless4u:
The Diablo Loot Goblin is quite useful in D3 and for a non Nintendo Amiibo quite nice looking.
The BotW Amiibos are beautiful, but I have to admit that they aren‘t really useful .
I like the LA-style Link for that game. Unlocking shadow link for my dungeons was pretty cool. Plus it's just an awesome little figure. My daughter loves carrying it around and chewing on it lol

I hated skylander a pretty worthless game if I had to say.

cosmetics? They are only for Amiibo scan or Display that I know of.
@Ruthless4u unless your like collecting Amiibos like people collect stamps and model cars then you can get all of them or just get the ones that works for the games your getting and that would suffice. Just be ready if they are no longer made and that is what you want then expect to pay $$ for them.
I got carried away buying them when they came out in the beginning. They are kind of cool, but I regret buying so many. Probably should have gotten no more than 10-15.
I have hardly used any of my Amiibos in games, I just buy them for the character.
If I like them, I buy them, for instance I have all Link Amiibos, but have never really used them in any game (except once with Wolf Link In BotW just to see what it was like to have a pet dog)
In my opinion using them in game is kind of cheating.
@Bunkerneath
"In my opinion using them in game is kind of cheating."
Not really.
It will unlock certain villagers on Animal Crossing New Leaf that i want them to live on my town.
Depend on the game, the using Amiibo have different purpose.

Then you can always sell them as well. But I suspect this is just a trolling reply and not genuine opinion.
