Not Nintendo but there were those AtGames devices around well before the NES and SNES Mini. I picked one up years ago, must've been before the Wii U launched even. Wasn't great but also wasn't toooo bad. Mine was portable and had a whole bunch of GameGear titles on it but there were non-portable versions also with everything form Atari to Mega Drive
But yeah, was very much a toy device. The SNES Mini is also but it was at a significantly higher quality, especially the controller. And at a price that reflected the quality. I'd argue that the emulation device scene, especially in the portable space, is far closer to the SNES Mini than those old AtGames devices. I don't think a simple "GB Mini" would have the appeal that the NES and SNES mini did....
..... unless they throw Pokemon on it, put Pokemon on it and it moves 10mill+ units overnight

@skywake ooh the AtGames ultimate portable game player, lol. I bought one of those years ago from a housewares store, holiday special. I remember lamenting it’s quality at the time but I did mess around with it.
I actually just ordered the Anbernic RG Arc thinking it will be like that AtGames portable except actually fulfill my hopes for a portable genesis player. It’s only taken 12 years, but hey..
How about instead of a "GameBoy Mini" they make a "SwitchBoy"? Pair back the Switch, fit it in a GBC sized form factor. Make it compatible with a subset of the Switch library including all of the NSO stuff. Now THAT I'd not only buy but wait outside in a line at midnight for
..... this is very much a device I want. Just straight up I want an easily pocketable device that I can play games I own on SNES, GB, GBC. Possibly extending to some of the stuff I already have via VC or NSO for consoles upto N64 at a stretch. Ideally extending to some more modern indie titles in the same kind of style. But mostly just a pocketable GBC/SNES
So I've ordered an Anbernic RG35XX+....

I think it would appeal to a huge audience but the existence of the GB library on NSO takes a lot of the wind from the sails of what could have been a mega product.
The better and more exciting idea is the "Switch Micro" concept that @Skywake has just described. Compatible with a subset of the Switch library (including the NSO apps) but built around being a smaller pocketable console. It's definitely something that Nintendo should be considering and it would keep the OG Switch going past the launch of "Switch 2".
I don't think you could get a Switch into the GBC or GBA form factors and still have usable controls and a large enough screen.
What they might be able to do is fit one in a clamshell case that's about the side of a 3DS XL. That's what I was hoping that the Lite would be, as it'd be a lot easier to carry around in your pocket.
Still, if there's no Switch 2, or even an OLED Lite, next year, perhaps they could do that instead?
