I made a thread like this several years ago which eventually faded away, so I figured I'd bring it back.

Here are a few of mine:

1. Frozen 2 is a much better movie than Frozen. It actually has a coherent plot, character actions make sense within the world, and the world is overall more believable (not realistic)

2. I kind of hate how Batman is now being consistently portrayed with a black emblem on his chest. To me it's emblematic of a toxic drive our culture has to distance ourselves as much as possible from anything classically perceived as childish. Give us the yellow emblem back!

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

Anti-Matter

1. Boxing / Kickboxing is far more interesting than Soccer / Basketball. Barechested male with boxer trunks, footwear and a pair of boxing gloves is far more appealing than boring outfits of soccer player.

2. I prefer learn Japanese language than Chinese language despite i am half Indonesia Chinese people. Japan is my Role model of almost everything while i saw China as a Copycat everything.

3. Eurobeat, Euro Dance and Euro Trance are much better music genre than nowadays EDM / Hip Hop / Rap.

4. I choose to use my bicycle as my permanent transportation instead of motorbike or car due to my concerns: high speed risk and air pollution.

5. I am the adult man who against all rated 18+ media (movie, novel, video games, etc) because i extremely hate all the dark, gritty, sinful ideas of human's darkside.

My Top 5 Music genre:
1. Super Eurobeat
2. Cyber Trance
3. Euro Trance
4. Hardcore Techno
5. Bubblegum / Eurodance

I'm not super into EDM (more into rock and metal), so I can't exactly tease out the different types, but I will agree that the stuff Europe puts out a great. I'm listening to Voodoo song right now, and I was just listening to Stromae.

@iKhan Considering your musical preference, combined with your opinion on European music, you may want to look into Within Temptation and Nightwish, if you don't know them already.

Street fighter the movie is the best video game to movie adaptation.

Studio Ghibli films are all about 20 minutes too long, and never feature a particularly satisfying ending

Ghost in the Shell the original anime film is mediocre. It sets up an interesting world and then does very little with it.

@Wargoose Have you seen the Takahata directed films?

@iKhan

Just had a look, and to be fair the only one of his I've seen is Grave of the Fireflies which is fantastic.

@Wargoose I haven't seen all of them either, but Only Yesterday is similarly good. I actually believe that between Miyazaki and Takahata, Takahata's the more talented storyteller.

Heck yes. I usually find my mind wandering around the last third. Fell asleep watching Spirited Away twice.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is one of the better ones. Book and movie. It seems to get a bad rap but it’s probably in my top 3. Also I prefer Deathly Hallows 1 over 2 movie-wise, the tension leading up to the end is electric, whereas the end felt kind of all over the place.

Also I really enjoyed The Matrix 2 (reloaded?) I loved the ghosty twins and the fight scenes were a lot of fun and very varied. The music was really cool too. It wasn’t mind blowing concept-wise but great if it’s just taken as an blockbuster action film. The third one was okay.

Harry Potter books aren't too good, and that the fanfics that spawned from the books are more interesting than the originals :v

I'm not a Harry Potter fan. I only read the books because my wife and I made a deal that if I read/watched Harry Potter, she would try to get into football (you can bet how well that deal went for me). That said, I thought the last book was by far the best. As a whole, I think the series couldn't decide if it wanted to be fantastical or realistic. You can do all these ridiculous magical things but you're stuck in the hospital for a month if you fall off of a broom? But then the last book they finally just kept it realistic. You are in trouble in an unwinnable battle? Leave. Another one? Leave again. Maybe anticlimactic, but I finally found it relatable and enjoyed it the most of any of the books.

I think the strength of the Harry Potter series is it's worldbuilding of a light fantasy world. There is something special about how J.K Rowling very intimately describes the finest details of this world, even when they aren't necessarily relevant to the current conflict. This really helps in the immersion, and because it's more of a light fantasy, it doesn't feel depressing to be drawn into that world.

There's also a great video about how she uses that tactic to hide key details to the mystery in plain sight.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Y0NFHNhgg)

@Wargoose I agree with the big epic ones like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl’s Moving Castle (which is a really “out there” one but I like it).

I think the most perfect of the Miyazaki films is Kiki’s Delivery Service and I don’t recall it having a wasted scene. But maybe my memory is serving me wrong there.

@iKhan Hey, if you like it, great. Obviously most people do, which is what makes mine an unpopular opinion (and I believe it is unpopular to think the last book was the best). I just never felt anything special nor that immersion that you speak of. I don't know how old you are, but I grew up reading Roald Dahl: The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc. Reading Harry Potter, I felt the whole time that Rowling was trying to do something similar but it always felt like a pale imitation. I probably would have liked it better if I was kid reading it like I was with Dahl's books.

1. Western super heroes such as Marvel / Batman / X-Men / etc are really lame for me, compared with Sentai Rangers that looks a bit better.

2. America's Next Top Model series are far more interesting than any super heroes movies.

3. Jackie Chan as E. Honde and Chun Li from City Hunter movie is much better than Street Fighter movie by Van Damme.

@Rexenokid Yeah I love that movie. Miyazaki makes the problem Kiki is having feel very universal, since it’s not a villain or something outside that keeping her down, but her own doubts and lack of experience. It’s a really relatable character and story.

As everyone is on the topic, is there an easy way to see any of these Studio Ghibli movies? I've searched on Netflix and Amazon Prime and I don't think either of those have any. I checked one out of my local library once, but being a library movie, it was all scratched up and kept skipping so I quit watching. I've heard such great things and loved Ni no Kuni, so I'd really like to try some.

@Xyphon22 Some Ghibli movies were recently added to Netflix, although they aren’t available in some countries.

@Octoguy Yeah I looked it up and unfortunately they aren't available in America, where I am. Hopefully that will change, but I doubt it if they are going to HBO Max, which I do not have. Oh, well. Maybe I'll find a way some day.
