Hi

I was wondering if anybody knew how secure the internet on the Nintendo Dsi XL is? I don't suppose it's secure enough for e-mail, internet banking and other such sensitive information? Any help would be great. Thanks

If you're going to be using it for sensitive transactions like internet banking then do it at home through a firewalled router and a secure wireless network and you should be fine. Preferably use WPA/WPA2 security for a wireless network. Though I'm not sure why you wouldn't just use your computer since the pages will load much faster.

Whether you use a computer or a handheld gaming device, don't ever transmit sensitive information over a public wireless or wired network - say, at a Starbucks or an internet cafe. Best to do it at home through your own secure network.

Thanks, Holymackerel.
Every now and again (admittedly not often) when I can't be bothered turning on my computer I just use my DSi XL's internet and when my brother got concerned about accessing my e-mail from my mobile phone I wondered about my DSi XL. Especially since I think I've used it in the past for e-mail and internet banking without even thinking about security just assuming it was safe, each time however I've been using our Wireless internet at home but It's probably safest to just use my Computer. Besides, as you said, things do load much faster compared to on a dsi.

It is no less secure then any other device. In fact it can be viewed as more secure in some ways as well. When it comes to computer security the weakest points are the end points. The wireless network in your house is as secure as you make it.

If you choose WEP it can be easily broken. Your wireless computer it shares the same risk.

Even though the DS has no anti-virus the opera browser is still very secure by nature since it has no plug-in support what so ever. no active-x, crippled flash, etc. As far as cookies are concerned you should be clearing your cache now and then anyway.

For online banking if the bank is worth anything it should be using https and the browser supports that.

The main problem is going to be the lack of updates. Any bugs that may be found in the Opera engine that would be patched on other platforms will not happen here due to lack in update.

@HolyMackerel

your absolutely right about the WPA/WPA2 support unfortunately we may have to consider wep due to backwards compatibility with DS games. There are a lot of people who cripple their own network to support this device. however the https should help with this.
