Well, I think I found a pretty good deal. I've been out of the loop on computers since I built my own about five (yikes!) years ago. It still did well at web surfing and playing diablo 2 and Guild Wars, but it was time to move on to something better.
Specs: Toshiba Laptop 16" widescreen Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz Memory: 4gb ddr3 (8gb max capacity) 400gb hard drive Win7 64-bit Draft-N wireless connectivity video card: nVidia GT 230M with 1gb DEDICATED memory (2814mb total w/ shared) hdmi port was $679. I bought a pair of them. his and hers.
I'm loving the dedicated video "card". My wife has a laptop she uses for work with the integrated Intel nonsense and it blows goats.
Specs seem ok for the price? Now to just finish getting rid of all the bloatware...
If you're going to hook your laptop up to your widescreen HDTV to stream Netflix, or play DVDs, or anything else ... the HDMI port comes in real handy.

I don't think I've ever even used a Toshiba, nothing against them though, it's just that I've only used Dell computers. But if you got two laptops for $679 you got a good deal (laptops can get expensive)
now to find a decent n-capable wireless router. the choices are somewhat daunting. Anyone have any suggestions? It must be able to work in a mixed 802.11g and 802.11n environment without dropping EVERYTHING to 802.11g. A USB port for a networkable printer or hard drive is a plus, but not a necessity.

I think he meant $679 each. Anyway, most brands don't differ a whole lot, I've had some bad impressions on Acer I think it was, but that doesn't mean their no good. I find Dell's are more expensive for lower tech and a better warranty. If you plan on spilling pop on your laptop, get a Dell Also, I don't know much about routers, except that cheap brands aren't always the best idea. I usually hear good things about Linksys.
