@lz: Avast IS trustworthy. Like I said, it is the best free one out there. And McAfee is ok, I am using it too, but that misses stuff also. There is no one solution, which is why at least a couple of layers of protection is the best bet.
And a lot of virus progs don't search for spyware/malware so you'll need something else for that (link in post #6). And don't use flippin' Internet Exploder, that's the oldest rule in the book. Don't!
Well, Free Antivirus keeps on saying it and when I do a scan with Avira is says that. I haven't tried Norton yet. I keep on thinking I got it from either my brother or this card reader/wirter I got to put music on my Dsi. The card reader is Dane-Elec.
I'd try what Machu said. If that doesn't work, then there are a number of programs that offer trials or free removals. Just make sure its a reliable program that you download from a reputable source.

@Machu: That's true. I'm not using Norton anymore as that stupid program gave me the "blue screen of death" when it tried to update. I'm using McAfee Internet Security and for some strange reason it doesn't slow down my computer like people claim that it does.

@Xkhaoz: Try malwarebytes also as that looks for stuff that antivirus does not. Good luck. @lz2009: McAfee IS a bloater, just like Norton. I only use it cos it doesn't touch 4 processors. But on the other pc i use, I daren't cos it's chugtastic.
Norton detects more than some people claim, but the real problems are that it doesn't catch some of the newer problems. That, and as has been said, it's a freakin' resource hog, especially on an older computer.

Well, I have Avira AntiVir Personal Free aNtivirus Norton Scurity Scan and Personal AntiVirus.
Personal Antivirus is fake. It's what's known as 'scareware', and it tries telling you that there are several severe threats in order to make you pay for the ful software so you can 'remove' them from your computer. That's likely the problem.
