I am a fan of teh retro games, but I'm afraid to say I never had or played an Atari before. I do have a 2600 system but no cables, power cord, games or controllers for it. Would picking up an Atari Flashback 2 allow to to dive into what was the Atari? Anyone have it and would like to share their thoughts? Does it emulate the games well?
The Flashback 2 is a decent introduction to Atari, it has many of the more well-known games like Adventure, Combat, Pitfall, etc, and the emulation is spot-on since the games are running on real Atari hardware (unlike the original Flashback). But it also has some lesser-known titles and even some unreleased games, which I found to be wierd since this is supposed to be a nostalgic product. It also only has 40 games and IMO, it doesn't have quite the best selection.
Its kinda hard to recomend it because if you end up disliking most of the games, you will grow tired of the system vary quickly. And if you end up liking the games, you'll probably be wanting more then what it has, and at that point, you'll probably want to get the real thing.
One cool thing about the Flashback 2 though, since it runs on real Atari hardware, the controllers are compatable with the real 2600 and vice versa.
Definitely reccomended. It's cheap, it can use legacy (AKA original) controllers, and it includes Pitfall and River Raid, two of the best Activision titles for the system. And it's not really an emulating system -- the internals are essentally true Atari 2600 works, just updated and streamlined. You can actually even mod the Flashback 2 very easily (with a little soldering and a couple parts) to accept original cartridges, making it a fully functional 2600! (The developers of the F2 have even informally talked up this point about the system, and intentionally left those spots on the circuit board open so people could do it if they wanted).
So yes, defintiely definitely reccomended if you're interested in getting into 2600 gaming!
Well, it doesn't seem to have any of the really good games in it like Yars' Revenge, Berserk, Enduro or Pitfall. It does seem to have a few good classics, but it seems like they tried adding as few good games as possible. xD

@Kingbuilder: If you talking about the original Flashback 2, it actually does have Pitfall and Yars' Revenge. It even has an unofficial sequal to Yars' Revenge called Yars' Return. And even though it doesn't have Enduro, it does have a game similar to it caled Fatal Run, which I think I actually liked more than Enduro.
@KaiserGX: If the plus model has the same amount of games as the original (40 games), then you'er probably better off with the original. Most of the old Atari sports games don't play vary well these days.
I guess it's better to get a couple well known games then generic sport games. It's on Amazon right now but I'm afraid to buy, what if it's the + model?
I bought one off ebay, supposedly new, not to keen on that but it's the original version and I got it for 23 dollars with shipping included. How was that? It's not to big of a risk right?
