I've only played Puzzle Quest 2, but that is based around Bejeweled-style gameplay. It also incorporates RPG elements, and in clearing pieces you can charge up spells and attack an opponent player.
By all accounts Puzzle Quest 1 is the better game, but it's a bit more expensive. Perhaps check out some reviews or videos though!
