DS games are on the DS card, all that saves on the SD card is VC/3DSWare and StreetPass and photos, DSi games save to the memory but you can transfer it to the SD card but if you wanna play the DSiWare titles you have to copy it to the console again, it's kinda annoying hope this helps

For me, the DS games that I buy from the eShop are the only things that save on the internal memory.
Everything else saves onto my card. Including the extra data from Nintendo Video. And so on.

What's a DSi game then? Do they take up much space on the internal memory?
DSiWare are games that were available on the shop for the DSi but are now on the eShop, there tiny apps. Internal is over 1000 and most DSiWare titles are less then 100

Some games saves progress via SD card (example: Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition).
Some games will save data on the SD card ( Retail 3DS games like Kid Icarus Uprising or Nintendogs). It's not your main save data, it's extra data. I'm not really sure what the extra data is for most games ( Nintendogs saves it's journal data for it, don't know for the other games).
I know Ridge Racer 3D saves to the SD card, but the majority seem to save to the cartridge. However, 3DS download games (except DSiWare) download and save to the SD card, while DSiWare games save to the internal memory.
I go by Lin1876 everywhere in games, so keep an eye out for me!
