Hey guys, Im a big nintendo guy and i have been grabbing a lot of Japanese versions of games lately, they are quiet cheaper than American versions because us Americans sure over-value our stuff, at the moment i have a Famicom (Japanese SNES) and have been collecting a number of games for it. Im excited for the Japanese exclusive pokemon 2ds's and will grab one just for looks, while i plan to play the pokemon game it came with, i have a few questions, i myself own a New 3ds XL and i realise that nintendo has region locked them so i cant play US carts, But would Everything else still work? Do i have to be in japan to use the japanese eshop? would anyone recommend any 3ds japan exclusive games? and lastly, Does anyone know another Console i could get in japanese that would be interesting to grab games for?? i was thinking of a Dreamcast even though i dont have an US one.

Do you mean Super Famicom? Normal Famicom's are basically a NES with built in controllers and a microphone.

As for the Dreamcast, the console can ran games region free.

If you're looking for a good system to collect Japanese games for, go get yourself a PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16)

@Santa: Actually i did mean Super Famicom, my bad, An famicom would be awesome to collect for but sadly its one of the japanese consoles that are not so cheap to collect, I thought i read that Dreamcasts were region locked? Would it be better to buy a US or Japanese Variant? obviously there wont be a difference but i would be the cool kid with the out of the ordinary dreamcast! Turbografx? if i remember right i have watched too much AVGN and i heard that theres barely any games for that thing? im interested in Computers, Sadly Commodore 64's are very expensive.

The Turbografx doesn't have a ton of games, but the PC Engine (the Japanese Equivalent) has a good sized library.

If you're going for Dreamcast consoles get yourself a European one because it's the only version with a blue logo - as for the system being region free, technically it isn't but you can easily burn a bootdisk onto any blank CD (very simple process, I speak from experience).

@Santa: Ah you know what, i heard about that bootdisk and that you are able to basically burn any game to a disk and it would read it, I dont enjoy such, i love the original hardware on how it was meant to be played. as for the Turbo, i'll have to look deeper into the japanese version! is there more than one variants ?

Yee, if you get any version try to find the TurboDuo (not sure what it's called in Japan), which includes the CD attachment built in.

@Santa: Thanks for the info! do you happen to know anything how good any of the other sega consoles are? i own everything nintendo and im trying to start on either japanese stuff or Sega.

@Trozzul

Well the Sega Saturn had a larger library in Japan, so that may be a good console to collect for.

To answer your questions about the 3ds: The eshop works fine outside of Japan, you just need a NNID for your jpn console. I have both physical and eshop games on my 3ds.
