3d land kinda killed the tanooki suit for me. Now I want the hammer bros suit and frog suit back though. I know they can't screw up the frog suit
The fact that some people define the mario games on the suits mario wears in them is what led to the tanooki overload in the first place. Focus on the game - and not just the powerups you like. If someone prefers one mario game over another just because of the appearance of a suit they clearly arent judging the games very well.
I'd think I'll like NSMB2 over SM3DL, seeing how I HATED the fact that the plot was so barebones (I know it's a mario game, but we never even see peach kidnapped or any sign), and the game was too linear. Plus NSMB2 has coin rush, instantly making it good.

I was so hyoed for SM3DL and played it for months, but i just play it much anymore. Yeah, i basically 100%ed it, but still i cant see myself replaying it. NSMB for DS i played and beat SO MANY TIMES. That's why i'm so excited for a sequel. The Wii one was fun too, but i prefer the DS one.
