After playing New Super Mario and Mario 3D Land, I have to say 3D land is much more impressive to me.

New Super Mario just felt like a remake of past NES/SNES games, where's 3D Land feels superior and like a new dimension.

NSMB2 would feel like a step back to me after playing 3D Land. Nothing seems new in this sequel apart from collecting more coins which just give you 1UPs.

Yes, 3D Land is much better than NSMB. I'm still buying NSMB2 though - they've added just enough to warrant my purchase (the multiplayer sold me :3)

3D Mario games are better than 2D Mario games, therefore 3D Land is better.
But yes, it is also the more creative of the two titles it would appear, whereas New Super Mario Bros. 2 doesn't really add much new besides a lot of coins.

Super Mario 64 DS is better than both of those games, and that's saying a lot.

3D Land is better.

3D Land, they're mixing it up some...3D levels with 2D mechanics. Love it.
All this and the 3D is far superior as well. xD

I'm talking about the New Super Mario games in general compared to 3D land.

I liked NSMB but then what's going to be THAT new with the 2nd one? Sure, you have MP but all that will be is co-op playing through the levels. I don't see the point in the coins.

To me the 3D titles have always been a lot more impressive than the 2D titles.

I love both though. I'll be picking up NSMB.2 soon and then NSMB.U as my only launch title. I have no doubt they're loads of fun.

What's the coin thing all about in NSMB2?

And what Multiplayer are we to expect?

It's just a hook. Something to keep you entertained for a longer period of time. It also makes for some interesting competition with the new Coin Rush mode. I'm not a fan of it personally, even with all those coins available, it feels kind of cheap.

I agree on the 3D Land part. Not a big fan of that game myself. Probably my least favorite 3D Mario.

To me, the controls are quite stiff, camera angels are sometimes very weird, a lot of music is re-used throughout the game, it's not as memorable as other titles in the series etc. Good game, but far from my favorite.

Trust me, one look at Japan and you can see that many people like the 2D games more then the 3D ones.
I'm not in that camp, though, although I do love Mario World.

3d land kinda killed the tanooki suit for me. Now I want the hammer bros suit and frog suit back though. I know they can't screw up the frog suit

Recently I've just been wanting more Mario. I 100% one Mario, then I just want another Mario. I don't care if it's innovative, although it would be nice, as long as it still plays just like how Mario should, I get it. I guess I'm Nintendo's ideal customer. (laughs)

I love the 2D ones, run through the game, do some Koopa jump combos and die by the shell I tossed.

I agree on that though. But there's also things I like about the 3D ones. I think 3D Land is the perfect middle-ground between the two.

In general, I prefer the 3D ones but I was very underwhelmed by 3D land and I think the first NSMB is much better. SM3DL was a fun game but it was a pretty forgettable experience. I can't think of a single stand-out level in the game and I found NSMB a lot more memorable. I'd give SM3DL a low 8/10. Actually that seems generous, maybe a 7 and I'd give NSMB a 9. Although, NSMB2 doesn't look like it will be as good as 3D land, it looks very lazy.

For having played both (I feel like I'm starting to repeat myself :/) I can safely say that 3D Land is better. Not by a longshot mind you, as both try to reinvent their gameplay style. The level design is superb in both, but I've got to say, 3D Land has a lot more charm between the two ^^
