I've searched and want to confirm: for the main Super Mario games (New Super Mario Bros., etc) as well as the Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi rpgs, do any of these need the New 3DS or could I play them with a regular 3DS or 3DS XL?

I've found a bit of conflicting information on whether I need the "New 3DS" or not for the C-stick, but I'm not finding a New system (either 2DS or 3DS) for a price I can swing currently.

Thanks in advance.

@nesdrj the "new" line of 3DS systems are great, so if that's available and in your budget I would recommend it.

But I really wouldn't be concerned about exclusives holding you back, there wasn't a long list of them. From what I can remember the main ones were Xenoblade Chronicles and Fire Emblem Warriors, and while they were technically impressive...I wouldn't pick them over the Switch versions.
Nintendo was probably aware that most people had the standard 3DS, so the ZL/ZR and C Stick were underused or ignored. I don't remember using them often.

If you're wanting EVERY mainline Mario that was on 3DS, then I suppose the new 3DS supported SNES Virtual Console. But they're gone along with the eShop. If you can find a standard 3DS at a decent price then you won't be missing out - but I'd recommend an XL.
I don't have particularly large hands and the original small 3DS is tiny.

Thank you both!

@Kimyonaakuma - Not so worried about the SNES virtual console - my kids both have GBAs and I have NES and SNES minis, a Switch, and the Switch Online service, so I can play most of the mainline games (except Galaxy 2 for some reason??), so a 3DS or 2DS was the missing link for a number of titles.

And I'd totally jump on a New 2DS XL - I'm not eager for the 3D effect and the N2DSXL looks great - but the pricing is well north of what I can justify currently. I'm not finding any N2DSXL in decent shape for under $190. Not saying that's not a fair price, but I can get a GBA and a 3DS for that.

Anyhow, thank you again!
