Thanks all for the help.

No a class 4 is fine a class 10 is overkill.

I'm using a 128GB card with my 3DS. You just need to reformat it to FAT32.

But how much of that space is available to store games etc because I thought 32GB was the limit?

If you can afford it, go class 10, the speed difference may or may not be noticeable. Honestly, I haven't noticed a difference in the speeds but then I prefer to get physical copies for most of my games. The speed may be more noticeable with more downloads.

Friend list is full, I will be clearing room for Bravely Default soon though. Colors! 3D Gallery, My Blog

I thought so too, but it seems that it is possible. There are a few references in Google search to the 128 gig ones, but ... as many point out ... why would you need such a thing?

Who knows I was just curious at the moment I'm using a 16GB SD and still have loads of space but I mainly but retail games physically and only dl VC and e-shop only games.

After the reformat, I believe it had 119GB of free space, all of which the 3DS recognized. I have about 862,000 free blocks at the moment.

As for 'why' I just really hate having to think about storage space. It's probably more than I'll need for this generation, but the $30 or so difference between a 64GB and a 128GB was well worth the peace of mind for me. I don't want to think about storage space. I've decided I don't have to.

Keep in mind though that I'm full digital with my 3DS. I don't own any physical games. If you plan on buying physical games, a 128GB card definitely isn't necessary.

I pretty much just use my SD card for eShop downloads not available on a physical copy. Might expand later but now still have 11k blocks open.

As for guy that said he or she had a 128 gig card that is wrong. As one guy or gal said the Max size for the 3ds XL is only 32 gig. I bought a 128 gig and formatted it from ExFAT to FAT32 it still would not read the 128 gig card. Nintendo says the Max the 3ds or 3ds XL can use is 32 gig any over that is not supported. So I put the 32 gig straight in the 3ds xL worked and read card. Unfortunately I had to put the 128 gig card in my sons Nintendo switch. So @caviarmeths was mistaken it will not support 128 gig if his or hers did support it then maybe it did from a jailbroken 3ds or change the motherboard that would be the only way the 3ds supports over 32 gig. 32 gigs should hold around 200 games.

What the...

Getting an email notification because someone on a site I haven't logged into in 3 years responded to a comment I made 7 years ago for troubleshooting their 10 year old system...

Anyway, I made no mistake and my 3DS is not jailbroken or modded in any way.

I don't know how to make it show total capacity without taking out the card and putting it in my PC, but here's a random page of my data management that shows I have ~24.2gb of free space on my card and a single page of software adding up to ~8.5gb, so this is already over the supposed 32gb "limit," and there are 20 other pages of software data.

You can't just do a simple reformat of the card. You have to use a program like MiniTool Partition Wizard (the free version does everything you need it to do for this).

Once you have that installed and open, you'll see a list of drives currently in your PC. Find the right one (in this case, it should be an exFAT formatted drive with 119gb capacity, but I'm using a 64gb card in my example picture here). Right-click on the drive's exFAT-allocated window and delete it.

Next, right-click it again and select 'Create.' There's a lot of options here, but the only one you need to worry about is the File System, which you should change from exFAT to FAT32.

And that's it. Click OK, apply settings, and wait for the wizard to finish making the new partition. Once it's done, you'll have a 128gb FAT32 drive that the 3DS will recognize.

EDIT: Looks like all of the images are broken. I don't know how to fix them, so here's the raw image links that you can copy and paste in a new tab:
