Topic: Constant corruption of data on SD Card

Hello everyone! So, just as a heads up, I'm not english so expect some silly mistakes over the whole post!

To start with, I have two 3DSs, the original 3DS Aqua Blue and the limited edition 2DS from Pokémon's 20th birthday. I always used an SD card since I had a couple games that were way too big to not save them in there. They always worked fine, as intended.

However, one day, I believe with no explanation, my Smash Bros. 4 save data was corrupted. At first I was "Oh, that sucks, but let's do this anyway" and started over, but as I turn on my DS again, boom, the save data got corrupted yet again. Since it's been a year and a couple of months that I've been having this problem, I eventually noticed that this is only an issue on downloaded games, not physical cartridges (although some would get corrupted data because of additional downloaded data, but I wouldn't lose progress at all).

With this in mind, and since I wanted a 2nd DS, I bought the limited edition one, hoping it'd fix everything. Formatted the SD card, inserted it in my new 2DS and downloaded my games. Same issue. Every single time I'd have some data saved, when I'd turn on the console again, it was corrupted.

I attempted using different SD cards, completely clean, to no avail. A month or two ago I called the Support and they ultimately said it was a hardware thing, which it obviously wasn't since I had two with the exact same issue, that only affected eShop games, and I didn't feel like wasting 20€ for them to say "No, sorry, we don't know!".

So... I decided to try here... Does anyone have a clue at all of why this might happen? I've formatted SD Cards, both DSs, reinstalled games and updates after corrupting, nothing worked. I'd be less bothered if I hadn't paid for these games, and honestly I love SSB but I can't play more than a couple matches because if I ever get to unlock Ness, it's all down the drain.

Thank you in advance everyone.

Having multiple systems do the same thing to different SD cards? That sounds very iffy.

My first guess would be that the SD cards themselves are to blame -

  • Are they cheap, poor quality or even fake SD cards?
  • Are the cards large enough to store your game save data?
  • Were they formatted correctly for use with the DSs?

Is it only save game data that gets corrupet or some/all eShop titles?

Are you sure you didnt turn off the console(s) while saving?

I very much doubt that either DS or 3DS is the problem here, but it's certainly possible.

My guess is that that if you buy a decent, large memory SD card, format it correctly and save your game data (and wait before turning the system off), then all will be fine. If not...

Did you delete the games every time that happened? Because you just have to repair the stuff on the eShop. At the bottom of every game's site is a "repair software" thingy.

You keep your saves like that as well

Forgot to mention, that doesn't work. If the files are corrupted, they just aren't recovered even when I tried repairing...

-> They weren't cheap. They're trustworthy SD Cards here in Portugal, the biggest one I have is 32GB.
-> They are more than large enough!
-> Yes, they were.
-> Sometimes it used to rewrap downloaded games after deleting corrupted data, but now it's always the save data that gets corrupted.
-> No, I'm super careful with turning off my consoles, to not mention this happens every time I turn my DS off and on.

So basically, the SDs are pretty decent and the consoles are in good shape...

EDIT: Also, as you might've already figured out, this SD card is an SDHC, which is compatible with the 3DS.
