Topic: 3ds and Wii U?

I'm a big fan of the Wii and plan on purchasing a Wii U in about a year. However, is there any point in also getting a 3ds? I admittedly haven't owned a portable video game player since the original GameBoy.

I've looked at the games and, at least to me, they seem to be lesser versions of the Wii games. But I haven't played any of them. For example, Rayman Orgins on the Wii, which I love, was created for the 3ds, but it didn't translate well on the 3ds according to the reviews. New Super Mario Bros. was taken from the DS and put on the Wii. Not sure which version is better, but I hear they were very similar. Ocarina is now on the 3ds, but would the original be better to download on the Wii as opposed to playing it on the 3ds? Monster Hunter will soon be on the 3ds, but I can't imagine that it will be as good as on the Wii.

Is it simply a question of portability and convenience? Am I missing something important about the 3ds? With the new XL bundle with MK7 I am somewhat tempted, but then I look at the games and question whether it is worth buying it simply to try 3D Land, NSMB and NSMB2. It just doesn't add up in my mind when the Wii has phenomenal games like Metroid Trilogy, Donkey Kong County Returns, the Mario Galaxies, Xenoblade and Skyward Sword.

Currently playing (perpetually): NHL 95, Mega Man 2 and Super Metroid
