I just discovered this little series, so even though this is late I had to point out my thoughts. The NTSC cover clears because it's very clearly inspired by Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer, completely using the same composition. I'm honestly surprised that Europe didn't appreciate it.
For a long time, I personally believed that Layton's story had nowhere to go and that it was better to leave it complete. However, I read this announcement as Level-5 stating they found a story that works despite that after all this time, and I couldn't be more excited.
As to the 'speculayton' I have a few thoughts of my own. I think you're missing the point about the 3D style indicating something; the games are just made like that now. However, notice that Layton's outfit is a little bit new: he wears a button-down shirt now (instead of the jumper(?) he wore before). This gives him a touch more maturity which seems to indicate later occurrence in the timeline. Additionally, Luke is shown in concept art available on the website, there seems to be no doubt about his return... Even if it would be very New to introduce a replacement helper, there can only be one protege.
I do think you're onto a brilliant idea with the New World thing! A lot of the pieces fit into place for it. My wild speculation would only alter that it takes place in British America, confirming a headcanon that the British Empire still stands in the Laytonverse (where else do you suppose Monte d'Or is besides British Africa?), hence the especially unfamiliar look.
This is also probably way over-analysing, but the wipers on the car suggest LHD. Certainly not London.
To add on about 13 Sentinels, Vanillaware was one of the premiere developers on the PS Vita, and their beautiful painting style stood out especially well on the Vita's OLED screen. 13 Sentinels was originally in development for Vita, and the console's demise led it to be a PS4 release. The Switch OLED is the closest to its natural home.
Look, I love Professor Layton. I played the series in my adult life and relatively recently. At a time where I started to feel like to games no longer "clicked" anymore, Layton brought back a complete nostalgic sort of joy. It's something special.
That being said, I don't see any way forward for more entries, and sometimes it's just better to let things end. Layton's character arc had already ended by the time of Lost Future, necessitating further entries to be prequels. The series spent its creative energy. Trying to create further adventures would inevitably ring hollow, which I can only imagine being more disappointing. The best to hope for is that Level-5 continues to preserve the franchise. (It's available on mobile, but only the original trilogy)
Things are perfect left as they are, we don't always need more, a lesson more gamers should take to heart. If anything, I wish Katrielle was given treatment to become a successor, instead of just being lambasted. At least a sequel to create a standing spinoff series (a la Ace Attorney Investigations), though I suppose there is that anime.
You know the phrase about how it's impossible to catch lightning in a bottle twice? To my mind, Level-5 somehow managed to do it six times... a seventh truly would be impossible

Re: Nintendo Hacker Gary Bowser Has Been Released From Prison
Still amused by how the trial was basically Bowser v. Bowser
