I will vouch for this system. I think the DS family, and Switch will target different audiences to the point Nintendo will pull in two different fanbases and eventually one might dive into the Nintendo system they don't have.
Right now, I'm going to estimate that the 2DS XL/3DS will last another 2 years at the least, 4 years at the most.
I can assure you that there is a 2DS XL audience, for example, my girlfriend, who does not have a lot of spare money (because of rent, college, food, etc) wants this system because she loves a lot of original DS games (and this 2DS XL is backwards compatible) and she does not care for 3D. She just wants to play games like animal crossing, mario kart, zelda, and the original DS harvest moon games. She isn't into video games enough to drop money on a console or PC.
In my opinion, this is Nintendo's way of bringing in more people by giving them cheap quality gaming, and hopefully if they like it enough after trying it out, they will be more comfortable buying a switch than other consoles because they are already familiar with Nintendo in general.
