This is on my list of games that I mastered as a kid, but have since then lost that mastery. Oh, and I never beat 1 or 2 either. Beating the final form final boss with 1hp left is one of my greatest gaming achievements.
And I'd always time out in stage 7 (yep, the airship). To get around that, I'd take an intentional death in 7-C (or was that 7-D) to reset the timer.
