Re: Poll: The Switch eShop is Hot, But Is It Time for an Overhaul of Its User Interface?

jjwilbourne

Not a lot of people voted for it, but I think a purchase history based recommendation engine should be top priority, followed by some sort of influencer-based top picks features (Nintendo Treehouse Selects, Nintendo Life's Top 10 Favorite Platformers, IGN Top 10 Switch Games of 2017, Metacritic's favorite Indies, Your Friends Are Playing..., etc.)

Putting categories in would be much easier and is more a matter of design (which is why they're likely to come first).

I'm guessing eShop goodies will come around the time paid online done or a little bit after.

Re: The Nintendo Switch Online App Is Now Available for Download

jjwilbourne

I think everyone is still baffled by why they decided to chose this as the only method of using voice chat rather than making it an option on top of making the app available on the switch itself as an optional download (which would have solved the parental issue).

The only issue that arises is the hybrid nature of the console, which would be easily remedied by the smart phone app and/or Bluetooth headphones compatibility.

In fact, Bluetooth compatibility would have made even this solution better.

Re: Gallery: A Look Back At Some Of Miiverse's Craziest And Most Beautiful Moments

It was always my hope that Nintendo would somehow combine Miiverse, Miitomo, and StreetPass in an interesting way for Switch.
I think it'd give the console a bit of character, and the console is really missing the "idle play" element that the 3DS and Wii U came with. I know they're trying to attract a different and more adult audience, but it could be an optional free install.

Re: Aonuma Says That Open World Is Here to Stay in Zelda Games

jjwilbourne

I don't think they will exclusively make Zelda games this way. Trying new and different things is what will make them grow creatively. I'm sure they know this. I do think that they'll keep this feel for the major releases. But another Zelda like this won't come out for at least 5 years. Plenty of time to try something different in between.

Re: Downloadable Games for the Switch Will Be Locked to One Console at a Time

@JohnSReid Big publishers don't tend to like digital. They see it as devaluing their IP. Which is a little true. I think the reason to go digital is that they stay tied to your account. I believe this here purposely to dissuade you from going digital. Because if you buy it physically, they don't have to let you keep it if they change for factors again.

No. That's not how it has to work. And that's not how it works for most companies.

You pack it in because it'll help sell the system. Not for me but for the "blue ocean" strategy they say they're trying approach. Free is very powerful. Being so rigid that you won't give anything away can easily be a mistake.

There's a marketing term for this. It's called a "loss leader." It's not me wanting things for free, it's a good business idea, and one that many business who create long-tail products use to great effect.

In case you misunderstand, here's how it works:

A game can be a loss leader because games are infinitely scalable. When you make something once, then you make money off of it forever, you have a scalable product. You then use that product as a loss leader (you don't make any money off it) as a gift your consumer. The game pays for itself indirectly by giving you more costumers. For nintendo, the average customer is likely worth a few hundred dollars. This far outways the $50 you'd make from one sale, and, therefore, the game pays for itself.

Sony and Microsoft use this strategy with their consoles. They sell their consoles at a loss and consider them loss leaders because they make up their money through first party titles and online subscriptions.

My proposition is not crazy. It's a common business strategy.
So ... NO. That's not how it HAS to work.

This smells so much like "pack in."
I'm hoping they figure this out by holiday 2017.
The baby one is creepy. Some of them are truly charming however.

I can see kids around 6-10 really enjoying some of these at Christmas, but if this is the game parents buy for the twin boys, their older 13-year-old won't have Mario or Zelda to play. Pack it in.
