I liked DK64 a lot as a kid, and it's sort of crazy that we haven't gotten proper 3D DK games since then. Switch definitely needs a follow up or at minimum a remake of this to have something on offer for the system. Doesn't have to be a collectathon like Mario, but SOMETHING other than DKC.
I had planned on picking this up, until I realized that it's basically a pretty NES game for which I have no nostalgia. And its not the greatest entry in the franchise either. I think I'll bide my time for a DQ8 Remaster or an HD2D for Chrono Trigger, Earthbound or Xenogears.
Considering that I spent hundreds of hours in Xenoblade 1-3 and hundreds more in BotW & TotK, and this is basically a blending of the two, I think I may actually pass for now. Plenty of other games to keep me occupied.
Usually for remakes from that era, 9 times out of 10, I'd just say do HD-2D. But this is CHRONO TRIGGER and I feel it deserves more. I don't want it to involve hair physics like FF7R but something along the lines of Dragon Quest XI is appropriate and keeps Toriyama's art style intact. That game was a blueprint for what I'd like to see. A simple, lower budget HD-2D is not enough for such a classic as this one. Save that idea for Xenogears & Earthbound. CT has held #1 GOAT status for too long to not ask for more from a remake.
For those who want to play it in 2D again, newsflash, you can already do that. And it still holds up reasonably well. I would still buy an HD-2D version but I'd always feel that we cheaped out on a experience that could have been more, and uniquely different from the original.
