imo i think the problem has to do with the game being announced a year too early. Since announcement its been delayed, its systems redone and given a staggered release window. Couple that with announcements/updates that seemed to be given at the last min.
One other thing i noticed that threw me off was the marketing. For as cool as the concept of a tactical marvel game is, marketing seemed focused on putting the player created character "The Hunter" front and center. Which in and of itself isn't an issue, however the execution of the character felt lacking. Yeah you get to create your own character, everyone wants to do that. So why did they ONLY focus on the female model that's on the cover art? Why not ALSO show a bunch of different models that different players could end up with?
i didn't want to make assumptions on what the vision board for the game probably looked like during development, until the cover art was revealed. Of all the characters & model placements, that one was chosen? where some of the most "masculine" characters on the roster are surrounding her, protecting her & looking directly towards the player/consumer? with the only other piece of info being the "Sons" name change visually front and center, ABOVE the hunter models head. real question, what are we as the user supposed to get from that image based on the plot or anything we know of the game or its characters? of all the supernatural themes in the plot, we get this? A plot involving Lilith, Chthon, Hydra, a roster from the avengers to x-men to defenders and runaways, corrupted heroes and a world ending prophecy...and the cover art gives off "beyhive protects & prepares to clap back on haters" vibes.
I don't mind that they put a female model as the default CC model for marketing. I don't mind that she's designed and placed on the cover as to draw the eyes attention. What i do mind is 2k and Fireaxis doing to this game, what cd projekt red did to cyberpunk 2077. Spending more time focused on their "message" and its delivery than the actual game itself. Cyberpunk spent so much time telling us how many chest melons our character could have. So much time wasted on trailers highlighting how sexual the world was. "LOOK ITS A FEMALE ANDROID WITH A JOHNSON IN OUR GAME!!" Meanwhile, the devs were struggling with gameplay systems and taking out features that were stated to be in the game. "YEAH BUT ITS ABOUT OPPRESSION AND HUMAN RIGHTS" Crazy how ive watched Mankind Divided have a much bigger impact culturally, than anything cyberpunk 2077 brought to "the fight"
so here we are, another Suns delay...but "current agenda" marketing.. familiar ground? I loved that Fireaxis ported X-com 2 and I'm actually looking forward to this game too, i cant help but be a little cautious though. Hoping they get things together and the game doesn't end up mediocre.
Hmm. Memory really is fleeting nowadays. Seems like people have forgotten about games like Conker 's BFD and the fact that there's a space for games like that. Especially nowadays if we're being inclusive. If we could have practically a whole direct dedicated to various forms of cat simulators, we should be thankful we still have developers willing to break trends to make games like this. I'm pretty sure theyve heard time and time again about the guns and there's still time to make known what the games all about. Its just a trailer and mini dive, relax I don't think we need the censorship police just yet. Its been on pc already and there's still no correlation between this game and youth gun violence. Let the game live.
