I suspect we’ll have an announcement in spring this year and the release next year. They probably have an Nvidia SOC, which they were rumored to have shown developers behind closed doors earlier, to keep them in the loop. It’ll be more efficient than the current AMD ones in the ROG Ally, Apple proves this is possible. They need to build up anticipation and offer a new experience, at least for Nintendo fans that might never get a PS5, let alone a Steam Deck. Their core market after all is kids & their price-conscious parents.
The Switch is just getting too old for even first party games and the penetration of 4k TVs has grown a lot. Yet, at the same time a rushed introduction, without showing the attractiveness of it, would be another Wii-U burn, which I’ll admit is a real danger if they just make an upgrade with more horsepower. People need to feel they can’t live without it, just better frame rates won’t cut it and it won’t catch up with the PS5 anyway.
So with all that, a reveal in the Spring and release either holiday season this year, or more likely next year, showing exciting games that can only be played on the Switch Ultra (tm). Perhaps including a better 3D headset adapter for new experiences that way. They’ve never been short of creative ideas, they just don’t always make a mainstream impact, so I’m hoping they do with this.
