Love 1up.com and Jeremy Parish's introspectives but he was way off base when he slammed this game in a Retronauts podcast. Axelay is a challenging and graphically-impressive shooter.
Meets the very definition of "pick-up-and-play". Loved this game as a kid and love it just as much now. My advice: play it with a buddy as the game is best enjoyed in a social atmosphere.
I'm with Marvel_Maniac. This game defines the word "classic". It spun the gameplay mechanics by introducing some RPG elements but kept the action-game flavour. The dungeons are really well thought-out and the bosses are fantastic. If you've been weaned on N64 or Gamecube this game may not be your cup of tea (as it is difficult), but I cannot apologize for a game that offers such a fantastic experience to those who choose to give it a go. I finally beat the game about 6 months ago after about 20 years of on-again, off-again playing and I appreciated every minute of it. After all those years the battery back-up on the original NES cartridge never failed me once!
Not sure whether NeoGeo games support 480p or not but I own 40" Samsung HDTV and haven't had to change from component to composite cables despite playing Baseball Stars 2 with my Wii set to display at 480p. You've probably already tried this Sirmatt but go into your Wii menu before you fire up a NeoGeo game and set your display output back to 480i. Otherwise, sorry for your bad luck.

Re: Phantasy Star II
Love this game. Doesn't take up much space on the Wii's hard disk either (approx 32 blocks).
