I had this same problem until I realised that the reason I was using the same Pokemon over and over is because I hadn't gone out of my way to try any new ones. Now I make a conscious effort to use Pokemon I've never really bothered with. Let me tell you, I slept on Excadrill.
Consider taking matters into your own hands with the new games being as easy as they are. I arbitrarily decided to switch to an all-Fire team halfway through my Z-A playthrough because the game was too easy when I wasn't limited in some way. If it doesn't sound convincing just give it a try, it's extremely fun!
