Mario movies actually have a full potential to be great films. Someone just needs to Tell Nintendo that they need stop relying on fanservice and easter eggs to carry the film. Granted it's Mario so it's not meant to be complex and it can be forgiven for that, but it needs to know when to let certain moments breathe and slow down and stop being so breakneck fast paced, and if they keep on relying a formula where it just says "we're gonna give you LOTS and LOTS of fanservice" at the expense of structure and telling a story, They only have themselves to blame whenever critics and eventually some fans start damning them with faint praise.
