You should have played it longer. That "other mode" you mention in your second to last paragraph is actually the main game, and those "achievements" are how you unlock the super-equipment that lets you advance farther into the tower and discover more of its secrets. What's clever about this entry is how they transformed the Excave engine into a full-on Rogue-like Scorechaser w/ International Leaderboards.
If anyone reading this is at all interested, I recommend buying it. I do miss the lighthearted story and lovable characters from the first two entries, but this one is by far the most addicting. You'll also have plenty of competition, as the game seems to still be quite popular in Japan (the leaderboards fill up pretty quick each week, with about 90% Japanese names).
This is actually one of the best series on the 3DS. The early levels are simple arcade fun, and the bonus levels are an intense challenge. The designers did an amazing job of forcing the gamer to adapt to new forms of bullet hell complexity in order to push forward to the next level - the choice of two very different tank types lets gamers both choose the strategy they use to advance, AND experience two very different challenges from the same level. LOVE playing L56 with the Power Tank where you HAVE to absorb a bullet in order to break through the initial resistance and gain a foothold against the boss tanks! Victory overall requires honed reflexes and a great sense for both evasive maneuvers and strike opportunities. You should go into the newest release (Tag Combat) with an open mind. Maybe it'll teach you how to play the game properly.
I've found it lots of fun and very addicting. A walkthru or strategy guide still has yet to be written, so there's a constant element of mystery to the experience. If you like Mystery Dungeon (Rogue-like) games, I recommend it. It's a new twist on a classic formula. Most of the reviews I've seen so far were written by people new to the genre who found the difficulty a little too much, but if you go in knowing what to expect, it's a very fair and satisfying challenge.

Great analysis in this review! You really gave this game a fair try and fully delineated all its (missed) potential...

Re: AeternoBlade 2 Indiegogo Campaign Finally Goes Live
Whoa, wish I saw this while it was active. The first game was awesome for me. Would have given $100 to AB2 for sure!

@JaguarWong You say "grammar" when you mean "style".
