I was today years old when I finally realized the Kong Quest/Conquest wordplay. I've always preferred "Diddy Kong's" Quest because of "Dixie Kong's" Double Trouble. Regardless, it's good to know it wasn't a typo after all.
Since Miyamoto and Tezuka consider it part of the mainline Mario series, my #1 pick would be Yoshi's Island. #2 is a tough one since I've never made up my mind which one I love the most: SMW or SMB3.
I'm glad to see Snowboard Kids on the list, but too bad that Bomberman 64 and Top Gear Rally aren't. I think it was very redundant including the whole Mario Party trilogy. You should have picked only the best one so as to give space to other games.
No Yoshi's Island? While Mario isn't the main playable character, it's still among the mainstream Mario games since it serves as a prequel (unlike Yoshi's Story, which is a full-fledged spin-off). Let's not forget it was marketed as Super Mario World 2 and Super Mario Advance 3.
My picks:
2D:
1. Yoshi's Island (not in the list, but to hell with it)
2. Super Mario World
3. Super Mario Bros. 3
3D:
1. Super Mario 64
2. Super Mario Odyssey
3. Super Mario Sunshine
