Re: Ys Book I & II

@ Ry-Type

You have to go to a lower floor (forget which one) and off to the left part of the floor is a boss to fight. If you beat him, you'll get a hammer a new book of Ys

@Outrunner

Sounds like you need to level up. If enemies are giving you more than 5 experience points, that's usually a good sign you need to level up to beat the next boss. Tinkering with the power ring or the armor ring should help too

You know what is so funny about Bio-Miracle for me? When I was a kid, a local video game rental store imported this game (along with a still-unreleased Mario 3) and labeled it as "Mario 4". Even back then, my young brother and I could figure out it wasn't even a Nintendo game, with the Konami pause sound effect and the swirly symbol in one of the levels. Kind of funny.

@ Badknux

Its more like Zelda, but you do have experience points and you do upgrade your weapons, armor, etc. So imagine Zelda with that and there you go.

Homing Missiles and the "I" power-up were the best comb IMO. Once your missiles are powered fully, you will soon experience what I called "brushing their teeth", where your missiles will literally dart back and forth on some of the boss's weak points before they attack you.

Well, keep in mind it was pretty amazing for 1990. I mean, it had voice acting a real instruments in its music. Not even FF7 had that.

@ Malachi

Its quite an upgrade from the SMS version, you're gonna be in for a bit of a shock when you hear all the music and voice acting.

@ Cally

Good to see someone who gave Ys a chance despite the game's unorthodox combat "system". I really do hope all the people on the net that say "teh running into teh enemies is teh stooopid" would give it a chance.

@ Danieru Lynx

Its a pretty unique action RPG. The combat system might put you off at first (its real time, but it doesn't involve an attack button, except for magic attacks), but its pretty amazing for a 1990 game. If you like Zelda, and the like, give it a try.

@ Gitaroo_Dude

That would be Neo Geo, not 3DO.

@mickeymac

That is your choice of course, but I think 90% of what makes Ys so magical is captured in the TG version. I know that music was originally composed that way, but, to me, thats like preferring the Final Fantasy Theme on the NES rather then orchestral version being played on the endings of FF8/9. Its nice for nostalgia's sake, but little else.

@ J.K.
The block size is 273 I hear.

Is this your first time playing Ys Book I & II?

Re: Ys Book I & II

Lagoon and Chrystalis both remind me a lot of Ys, but I think both are a bit inspired from Ys.

Re: Ys Book I & II

To those who may be skeptical, all I can say is at least give it a try. That video isn't bad, but it really doesn't capture the game all that well. Most of the music actually uses real violins, flutes, guitars, etc with a few having that synthy anime-ish sound to them (like the one above). If you want to see why we have games like FFVII, you should check out Ys. Sure its a bit dated now, but with its use of high quality music, cut scenes, voice acting, etc, it set the standard for a lot of J-RPGs today.
