Re: Looks Like The Daemon X Machina Demo Will Be Removed From The Switch eShop Next Week

It's a great game, but there are a few things I want.
First, the out-of-bounds mechanics NEED to change, especially with how frequently the first boss skirts the boundary. It's far too easy to just die utterly to something like a charged particle beam. Frankly, the only system that makes sense, in this case, is an out-of-bounds countdown.

Second, to distinguish itself from the likes of Armored Core, this game should lean hard on the Outers (pilots on foot, for those who haven't played) themselves. We need lots of close-quarters love such as parts of facilities that are too small for the Arsenal. Some cinematic moments and boss fights therein would be wonderful.

Cooperative play is another must.

And for some would-be-nice: licensed Pro controller. After all, DXM is exactly the sort of library addition that already has me chomping at the bit for a Pro controller.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 2nd)

NES: Blaster Master
SNES: Chrono Trigger, Cybernator
PC Engine: R-Type
Arcade: A bunch of random titles including Cyberbot: Fullmetal Madness and probably some Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

Haven't really had the chance to get an arcade stick for the Switch, so we're holding off on playing a bunch of the titles we want, like Blaster Master Zero.

Re: All Secret SNES Data Has Just Been Removed From Nintendo Switch Online's NES App

AdaptiveLynn

Best guess is the games were packed into the NES Online app for development and experimentation purposes. They may have been trying to figure out how to get the front-end to cooperate well, and removing the games might indicate that they decided against it to prevent confusion from renaming the app and/or because they couldn't figure out a good way to make the hybrid system work.

In short: This could easily just mean that they're going for discrete NES and SNES apps... which, with as bad as their library management front-end is in general, is HIGHLY appreciated.

Re: This Portable Nintendo Switch Speaker Is Now Funding On Kickstarter

@Mountain_Man "What a useless accessory. The Switch has a really good set of speakers built in."

I would like to respectfully disagree. Even in a quiet environment we only find the speakers to be tentatively passable for listening to music. This dock is a great concept, since it basically provides a lot of flexibility that seems to include use as a Bluetooth sound bar for phones. It's basically an all-in-one solution intended to reduce the need for cables and separate pieces of hardware.

The real problem is that it's marred severely by safety concerns due to the Switch's poor compatibility with the USB Power Delivery specification.

@MrVariant Can't force people, but you can raise awareness.

They're giving us parents toys that look like tools so we can pretend we're involving ourselves in our children's upbringing while we continue to negligently take a divorced-from-their-lives backseat approach to policing their gameplay. I appreciate the usefulness of some of these tools in some cases, but this is all just sidestepping the real issue.

Nintendo isn't addressing gaming addiction at all by doing this. They're just reinforcing misconceptions so they can look good. It's a marketing stunt. "Virtue signaling."

Help people see a brighter and less scary "IRL," give them tools to help them stave off the things that drive them to drown themselves in fantasy worlds and booze bottles.

Oh, cool... Nintendo's proving the psychologists and psychiatrists who fought that diagnosis right by feeding the straw man!

Hikikomori don't exist because it's nice inside. Hikikomori exist because people just keep ramping up the pressure and making the outside world more stressful and terrifying to them.

People don't get addicted to games because they spent too much time on them as kids. They get addicted because of stress and predatory design such as operant conditioning ("Skinner boxes") and other casino pull strategies.

What Nintendo SHOULD be doing is banning predatory games, supporting mental health awareness and providing tools to improve people's mental health, as well as more pointedly targeting the root causes of hikikomori tendencies.
