  • News EU VC Update: Metal Slug 2, Forgotten Worlds and Space Invaders

Not many surprises for Europe again this week! It's basically the exact same as the US update last week, with the addition of one more game.

Metal Slug 2 basically just builds on the standard set by the original Metal Slug. If you like rock-hard shooting/platforming action this is the game for you! This time, there's four characters to play as, more weapons, more "Slugs" to ride, more..

  • News USA VC Update: Boogerman

It's just one game again this week, and unfortunately it's neither of the big-name titles (Castlevania III and Phantasy Star IV) which Europe recently got. What you get instead is Interplay's next title.

Boogerman is a rather average game in terms of gameplay - Just run and jump your way through the stages. What really sets it apart from other...

  • News USA VC Update: Forgotten Worlds and Space Invaders

Hot on the heels of Mega Man 3, Capcom has released yet another of their classics on VC! It's accompanied by a popular, yet aged arcade game by Taito.

Forgotten Worlds is the Genesis port of Capcom's arcade shooter. You control a flying warrior in a robotic suit who, as is usually the case in shooters, has to take down an evil overlord and his...

  • News USA VC Release - Earthworm Jim

Just the one game for the US today, but it's a classic - It's everybody's favourite earthworm, Earthworm Jim!

Earthworm Jim for the Genesis might not be the most graphically advanced version of the game, but that doesn't really matter when you consider the fact that it has an extra level which only also appeared in a later enhanced PC edition of the game. The game itself is pretty much the..

  • News EU VC Releases: Mayhem in Monsterland and More

A very nice surprise for Commodore 64 fans today - Out of nowhere, Commodore has released one of their most popular games. Accompanying it are two Sega classics.

Mayhem in Monsterland was one of the very last Commodore 64 games, and is seen by many as the last great game released on the system. Aside from very colourful graphics and nice music, the...

  • News USA VC Releases: Secret of Mana and Street Fighter II Genesis

It's another big week for the USA. A timeless Square classic and yet another update to Capcom's fighting series will be available later today.

Aside from Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana is one of Square's most highly regarded games. While it's not readily apparent, the game is actually a sequel to Final Fantasy Adventure on the Game Boy (Which secretly really isn't a Final Fantasy..

  • News USA VC Releases: Mario Golf and Shining Force II

Nintendo has dropped the ball on Hudson again! Digital Champ: Battle Boxing and Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou, both announced for release in the US today, have been pushed back in favour of two other games! When will they learn? It's not all bad news though...

You can finally stop complaining about the lack of recent Nintendo 64 releases - Mario Golf...

  • News EU VC Releases: Earthworm Jim and Shining Force II

A Sega duo hits the Wii Shop today. And it's not just any duo, as both of the games are extremely well-liked cult classics, which many Sega fans have been longing for.

In Earthworm Jim you take control of Jim, an earthworm who was lucky enough to have a power suit fall on top of him, thus giving him a body and special abilties normal earthworms...

  • News USA VC Releases: Super Dodge Ball and Vectorman

Don't just buy Mega Man 9 on WiiWare this week and ignore the Virtual Console - There's two great games up for grabs there as well!

If you've played the excellent River City Ransom, you'll probably think Super Dodge Ball looks strangely familiar. If you do, you're right, because it's another game in the Kunio series, which all share a similar art style. Strangely, outside Japan, the link between..

  • News EU VC Update - Samurai Shodown II

Samurai Shodown II was supposed to be released in the US last Monday, according to SNK. Sadly, this ended up not happening. Europeans, however, are now able to buy SNK's fighter masterpiece on Virtual Console. It is flanked by a cult Commodore 64 game and two Mega Drive games.

Obviously, Samurai Shodown II is the pick of the bunch. We got International Karate +, a fantastic fighter, only two weeks..

  • News USA VC Update: Sonic (Master System) and Splatterhouse 2

If you've been keeping up with the news and saw our recent articles, you would've known that Capcom, Hudson Soft and SNK Playmore all "confirmed" that one of their games would be released on VC today in the US. These games would have been Mega Man, Ys Book I & II, and Samurai Shodown II, all classics and very well liked among retro gamers. Sadly, it appears that Nintendo of America is having none of that (Just like two weeks ago with Star Parodier and Break In) and has chosen to release completely different games instead.

    ...

  • News USA VC Update: Super Fantasy Zone and Gley Lancer

If you're desperately hoping for another TurboGrafx-16 game to be released soon, you might've noticed that Hudson's site listed Star Parodier and Break In to be released today. Sadly this is not the case, as in a strange twist of fate two different games have been released instead. Both of them are shooters, both of them are on the Genesis, both of them are imports, and both of them were already released in Europe quite a while ago.

Super Fantasy Zone is the last game in the Fantasy Zone series. It is quite...

  • News EU VC Releases - 27th June - Super Fantasy Zone

After this week, it is rather safe to assume that Nintendo of Europe is indeed following a pattern. There's 5 new VC games to pick from, and like two weeks ago, no WiiWare games.

The top pick might be argued about, but if you ask us, it's Super Fantasy Zone for the Mega Drive. The game plays pretty much exactly the same as the original Fantasy Zone...

  • News EU VC Releases - 16th May - Third Hanabi Festival Week

If you're a shooter fan you're in real luck this week: There's two import shooters, and both of them are generally considered to be fantastic and some of the best the genre has to offer. There's also an import boxing game.

The first import shooter this week is Star Parodier on the Turbografx. After Konami made a wacky spin-off of Gradius called Parodius, Hudson Soft got the idea to do the same, and..

  • News EU VC Releases - 9th May - Metal Slug and More Imports

After last week's relatively good batch of games we honestly expected Nintendo would choose the least interesting upcoming imports to release this week. Thankfully we've been proven wrong - They only chose a single bad one, plus two good ones, and on top of that, we get a non-import game!

Metal Slug needs no introduction amongst most hardcore gamers. The series is basically a wackier version of the..

  • News Star Parodier and other imports in the next Hanabi festival

In today's Nintendo Europe news in a rare moment of transparency from Nintendo we now know what to expect from the next Hanabi festival:

Over the coming weeks, you’ll also be able to enjoy other never-before-seen greats such as Gley Lancer (SEGA MEGA DRIVE), Cho Aniki (Muscle Brothers) (Turbografx), Puyo Puyo 2 (SEGA MEGA DRIVE) and Star Parodier (Turbografx), and more. All games will be..

  • News EU VC Releases - 2nd May - The Hanabi Festival Returns!

Europeans who have had their Wii for a while will no doubt remember last September - Nintendo of Europe introduced a special "Hanabi Festival" dedicated to give us import game goodness. With games such as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Mario's Super Picross and Sin and Punishment becoming available to us for the first time ever, who could refuse? Certainly not us!

    Well, it looks like..

  • News Three Interplay-Owned Franchises Coming to VC

Gaming news site Gamasutra has reported something which will no doubt please many - 3 franchises currently owned by Interplay are making their way to VC.

After the recent relaunch of Interplay's website, there was some speculation on if there would be resurrections of the franchises shown around the company's logo. Well, these aren't exactly resurrections, but they're coming back, at least!..

  • News US VC Releases - 21st April - River City Ransom

Fancy a bit of a punch up this week? Maybe embarking on an epic quest spanning several generations is your thing? If so you are in luck!

What better way to herald in the series of weekly NES beat ‘em ups than to begin with the mighty River City Ransom? Our North American readers were green with envy when Europe got this in their Wii Shop (entitled...

  • News EU VC Release - 18th April - Sega Week - Phantasy Star III

After the 4-game blowout last week, some Europeans wondered if Nintendo of Europe had somehow completely turned around and would start to throw out multiple games every week from now on. This dream has been quickly shattered, because it's just one game again this week.

Apparently not considering the two Master System games last week as a true "Sega Week", Sega has now released a new Mega..

  • News US VC Releases - 14th April - Mega Turrican

If you like blasting things then you are in for a treat this week as this Monday’s Virtual Console selection will give you hours of blasting pleasure.

First up is Mega Turrican on the Sega Genesis. You might remember this as Turrican 3 on the Commodore Amiga. It's kind of a mix between Metroid, Contra and Gunstar Heroes but that doesn’t really...

  • News OFLC Update - Another Konami Import Title

In an OFLC update today, three more titles have been rated for eventual Australia release (As always, this should most likely mean they will also come to Europe).

The only "new" game of the bunch is Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa (Bio Miracle Baby Upa), a Kirby-esque game starring a baby called Upa. This baby would later appear in a few of...

  • News US VC Releases - March 24th - King's Knight

Normally we lead with our favourite game of the week but as the Sega Genesis choice isn’t going to blow you away we’ll lead with Square’s King’s Knight this week just because, you know, um, it was developed by Square. Think of it as a skeleton in Square’s closet! This is no Final Fantasy it has to be said.

Here at the VC:R we admit we do have a bit of a soft spot for vertically scrolling..

  • News EU VC Release - March 21st - Sega Week - Mega Turrican

Tomorrow's Good Friday in most of Europe - Last year, Nintendo of Europe updated the VC a few hours earlier than normal because of this. Not this year though, the update was at the regular time!

Super Turrican was only added 3 weeks ago - But now you can get the game that was originally released before it: Mega Turrican! This game's a bit more...

  • News USK update - Four new Sega games: Phantasy Star, Gley Lancer

The USK is the German equivalent of the PEGI, ESRB, OFLC and all those other rating groups. They have been known to rate VC games occasionally, however, they never add the ratings to their site. Sometimes, though, they slip up and accidentally add them as Wii games - This is the case today, as they've added four new games which are all published by Sega, and are all Mega Drive games. The games are as follows:

Gley Lancer (Import): This shooter by NCS (The makers of Cybernator, among other games) never made it out of Japan, but still has...

  • News US VC Releases - March 10th - DoReMi Fantasy

Break out the sushi and sake because this week the Virtual Console is turning Japanese! Platform and puzzle fans are sure to be delighted with these two choices. Both DoReMi Fantasy and Puyo Puyo 2 never saw the light of day outside of the land of the rising sun, which is a crying shame as both are excellent. Finally Nintendo have addressed the balance and done all the legal business to get them on to the VC this week.

DoReMi Fantasy: Milon’s DokiDoki Adventure is the sequel to Milon's Secret Castle on...

  • News EU VC Releases - 15th February - Sega Week - Phantasy Star II

In a rather welcome change of pace, this week finally sees more than one new release in Europe. It also brings back Sega Week, which was strangely absent in January (Well, unless you count a single Mega Drive game as a Sega Week).

The obvious top pick today is Phantasy Star II, a rather well-known Mega Drive RPG which has been rereleased a bunch of...

  • News US VC Releases - 4th February - Operation Wolf

You can practically hear the sound of a funeral march as this week’s North American Virtual Console releases slowly appear from out of the impenetrable mist…

Those of you that moaned about the solo-game weeks will be heartened to learn that you have two games to choose from today, but the bad news is that both aren’t really worth downloading. Operation Wolf on the NES may cause some to prick..

  • News Phantasy Star II Confirmed by ESRB

Lucky Japanese gamers got their chance to enjoy the game today, but the recent certification of Phantasy Star II by the ESRB confirms that the classic Genesis/Megadrive RPG is coming to Western shores, too.

This isn’t a tremendous surprise as the game has been released in the West several times, but it’s certainly worth looking forward to nonetheless. The Phantasy Star series is one of Sega’s..

  • Feature The Sega Master System Rap

Now that the Sega Master System is joining the ranks of consoles that are emulated on the Virtual Console we thought it would be the ideal time to reveal the infamous "Sega Mastermix '90" to the world!

Back in 1990, Virgin (then the UK distributors of Sega hardware and software) were aggressively marketing the Sega Master System and...

  • News EU VC Releases - 11th January - StarTropics

Once again, Europe does not get 3 or more games this week. And once again, Nintendo seems to try and make up for it by making one of the games they do release a great one (The other is ok). Well, at least it wasn't just one game again! The great game this time is StarTropics, the first of only two games in Nintendo's (unfortunately) dead franchise of the same name. It's a lot like the original The Legend of Zelda, with some improvements, leading some to refer to it as "everything Zelda II should've been". It's still a mystery why Nintendo killed this franchise off. Let's hope for StarTropics 3 someday!

  • News US VC Releases - 31st December - Light Crusader

The US plays catchup today, as they get three games Europe's already had a while. All of them are good, though, so hopefully no complaining this time!

Leading the pack is Treasure's Genesis RPG, Light Crusader. This is to this day probably Treasure's only Western game, featuring almost no obvious Japanese influence. It's also usually named as one of Treasure's worse games, but that's a bit wrong,..

  • News US VC Releases - Christmas Eve - Donkey Kong Country 3

Merry Christmas! Nintendo's gift for Americans is the final game in the DKC trilogy, Donkey Kong Country 3! The game was released late in the SNES's life, meaning a lot of people missed out on it. Now is the time to make up for that mistake, as it's a great game, although not as good as DKC2. Here's a secret - Enter your name on the file select screen as "MERRY" for a very Christmas-y experience!

Today's other releases probably won't cater to as much people, unfortunately. Blades of Steel is one of very few NES sports games that has held up to this day, but if you don't like ice hockey it's probably n..

  • News US VC Releases - 17th December - Cybernator

A lot of shooting in today's three US games! First up is Cybernator, the SNES game where you control a large robotic suit and blast your way through a multitude of stages. It's one of the more popular "lesser known" SNES games and as such is quite a cult classic.

The second game today is Monster Lair, the TurboGrafx-CD version of Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair for the arcade and Mega Drive..

  • News EU VC Releases - 7th December - Sega Week

Breaking the norm again this month, Sega only releases two games instead of the usual three. No matter though when both of them are great! Rolling Thunder 2 is one of Dazza's favourites. It borrows some elements from Shinobi and combined it with arcade action, as there's enemies coming at you from all sides. While somewhat short, the game just oozes quality every step you take, with great music, graphics and gameplay.

The other Mega Drive offering is Light Crusader, an isometric Action RPG which is somewhat similar to Landstalker. Don't ignore it - It's a Treasure game! If you've played games like Gunstar Heroes, Sin &..

  • News US VC Releases - 3rd December - Eternal Champions

After last week's disaster, this week's releases are a bit more bearable. First up is Sega's answer to Street Fighter - Eternal Champions. Instead of having fighters from around the world, Eternal Champions has fighters from various time periods! This of course leads to wildly different movesets for each character. The formula has obviously been bettered nowadays, but if you like the genre it's still worthwhile to check out the game.

Hot on the heels of Eternal Champions for pick of the week is Zanac. You might be thinking - "A NES shoot 'em up? Aren't all of those average at best?" For the most part, yeah, they..

  • News US VC Releases - 26th November - Vegas Stakes

After last week's "big" releases for the Wii's one year anniversary, calling this week "underwhelming" would be an understatement. While it's a total of three games, we can't really seriously recommend any of them to everybody. The only good game this week is Vegas Stakes, a gambling simulation for the SNES. It's all well and good for gambling fans, but everybody else (Which is very likely a lot of people) would be better off skipping it unless they're really interested in finding out how the casino world works.

    ...

  • News US VC Releases - 19th November - Wrecking Crew

The Wii's out a year today in the US, so to celebrate, have another Mario game! Wrecking Crew is one of the more unknown Mario games, frequently not even being mentioned in lists of his games. Despite this, the game has held up very well, and those who've played it agree that's it really fun. With 100 stages and a level editor it's more than worth the price.

Nintendo also apparently found it a good..

  • News US VC Releases - 5th November - Super Mario Bros 3

With the release of Mario Galaxy next week our pals at Nintendo have decided that the long wait is finally over. Today the North American region gets the sublime Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES. This game will not need much introduction for most Nintendo fans. You'll have either played it back in the days, on a SNES with Mario All-stars or the GBA port. Either way you cannot afford to be without this. The best game on the Virtual Console to date! (Well next to Super Mario World of course!)

    ...

  • News EU VC Releases - 2nd November - Sega Week

Less Sega games than normal in this month's Sega week - only two, instead of three. But one of them is fantastic, and there's two other games as well, so there's no reason to complain! Or is there?

The top pick is Treasure's awesome run 'n gun game for the Mega Drive, Alien Soldier. It's a bit like the also available Gunstar Heroes, but ever so slightly slower paced, with less cannon fodder and..

  • News US VC Releases - 22nd October - Ninja JaJaMaru-kun

Nothing too grand for the US today - two average games and one that leans slightly towards the bad side. Still, you should check them out, as one of the games, Ninja JaJaMaru-kun, is a previously Japan-only game. It's a strange little arcadey platformer, in which you take out ever-stronger enemies through an infinite number of rounds in order to rescue your love, the princess Sakura, from the evil Lord Namazu Dayuu. As with all other import games, it comes at an increased price - 600 Wii Points.

  • News EU VC Releases - 5th October - Fatal Fury and Sega Week

The time has come - The first Neo Geo game has hit the European VC! As expected, it's the classic fighter, Fatal Fury. Play as Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard or Joe Higashi and try to avenge yourself on Geese Howard. Neo Geo games cost 900 Wii Points each (As previously stated), due to their great graphic and sound quality.

Joining Fatal Fury are 4 Mega Drive titles, as it's the first update of the..

  • News US VC Releases - 24th September - Streets of Rage 3

The long-awaited final part of Final Fight's rival series, Streets of Rage, hits the American VC today. Yup, it's Streets of Rage 3! The game's had quite a lot of criticism over the years (Especially compared to Streets of Rage 2), but it's still a great game and any beat 'em up fan should check it out (Though SoR2 should still take priority).

Second today is a catchup game for Americans - Kirby's..

  • News Hardware Focus - Sega Mega Drive / Genesis

    Mega tech

Sega may be a name that many people readily associate with videogame brilliance, but when you seriously think about it, they've only really had one universally successful machine - the Mega Drive (Genesis to our American readers). The Saturn and Dreamcast may have garnered critical support but they died a sad, painful death at retail and...
