Anniversary: Pokémon FireRed And LeafGreen Are 20 Years Old Today

Leafgreen was my second Pokemon game (after Ruby) and therefore it has a special place in my heart

My favorite part about those games always have been the Sevii Islands, such a shame that we probably never will see them again since Let's Go didn't bring them back

This is the definitive way to play the original Kanto games, I wish Pokémon would release these for purchase on eshop

FR/LG are still, in my humble opinion, the best way to experience vanilla Kanto. Visually cleaned up for Gen 3, adding types, mechanics, and Pokemon from games that came after R/G/B/Y, and the Sevii Islands that were vaguely reminiscent of the Orange Islands from the anime in some ways. The islands made for a bit of fun post-game too; Gen 1 didn't have much of one originally.

The only thing I did not like about FRLG was how Golbat (And Chansey) kept trying to evolve but mysteriously couldn't until the postgame. Gating off the rest of the dex in such a forceful way was very unnecessary in my opinion, especially in such a confusing manner where the evolution scene still plays but then cancels itself.

HGSS and ORAS did it much better by incorporating all new monsters into the game like normal. (and then BDSP decided to just not include anyone from the newer games at all, which is even worse)

Aside from this, FRLG are great games. I still prefer RSE as far as gen 3 goes, but there's no denying FRLG is Pokémon when it was still striving for high quality.

I always found it really strange that they did Leaf Green instead of Water Blue in the West

Remake of Blue and Red. I'm one of those old fogeys that can't let go of the classics. Parents buying my brother a green GBC with Pokémon Red for his birthday and then a month later on my birthday getting me a yellow GBC with Pokémon Blue. I hope they stick with the fully open world Pokémon games (but with with more development time or change GameFreak for someone else), but I also hope they release more of the classic games, even if they are remakes/remasters.

The first Pokémon remakes came as a total surprise to me. I loved them, but somehow I expected a bit more. Maybe because it was incredibly hard to surpass Gold & Silver. Ruby and Sapphire didn't live up to those standards, so LG and FR couldn't either. They are still very solid games if you ask me.

Please, the last we need are more Kanto remakes

I would like them remade, but NOT in the style of BDSP, the dream would be a modern pixel style

I love gen 1, but they definitely don't need more remakes and revisits. Unless it's a whole new story in that region, I'm fine with a good ol fashion re-release

I would love to see these games brought to Nintendo Switch Online - GBA. I also want to see a new Legends game set in Johto, or a new Let's Go set in Johto because gen 2 is still my favourite games in the entire series. I think Pokemon really needs these older games added to NSO, be it on the GB & GBA respective apps or their own app (but if its their own app, then every single retro Pokemon game needs to be there to justify its likely inclusion in the Expansion Pass).

A friend of mine returned my GBA SP recently, and he gave me Fire Red as well.
I turned the game on a minute ago, just to check if it works, turned it off, went to NintendoLife and I see this article.
Coincidence?? Yes.

A collection of GB/GBA Pokemon games would be fantastic, but it's never going to happen when they can make much more money re-releasing and/or remaking them individually..

Why do people want these games on NSO? I rather pay for a download because I don’t want the rental games on NSO to disappear one day along with my Pokémon and badges.

FireRed and LeafGreen already had a "remake", the let's go games.

I don't really want them on NSO. I'd be more happy with Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

I actually bum-rushed through FireRed right at the end of last year funny enough.

Still disappointed that the Let's Go games omitted virtually all of the improvements introduced in the GBA remakes, including the post-game content and evolutions (and pre-evolutions) introduced after Generation I.

@Ooyah : After playing both, I still prefer the original Gen II games, especially since the remakes neglected to address any of the balancing issues that made the Kanto portion of the game (and preparation for the final battle in Mt. Silver) such a tedious grind. Kanto gym leaders still painfully underlevelled, wild encounters correspond to what their levels would have been in the Gen I games etc.

The remakes also recreated the stripped-down versions of many of the Kanto locations that were originally done so due to the memory limitations of the GB/GBC cartridges (such as Silph Co., Mt. Moon, Lavender Tower etc.), but what possible excuse did they have replicating that for the DS? It was such a bafflingly stupid decision on GF's part.

And capturing the legendary beasts is still a frustrating chore. I can't remember precisely what BD/SP did differently in that regard (for Mesprit and Cresselia), but I recall it being a far less painful process.

The only real upside was the expanded National Dex, which allows for all Gen III/IV Pokémon in the game (if you are so inclined), and maybe a handful of other QoL improvements that aren't springing to mind right now, but that aside, I don't feel that the remakes superseded the originals. The PokéWalker was a really cool accessory too.

To me these games are still the definitive Kanto experience. Updated the original games without making the concessions and unnecessary changes that the GO! games made

I'm not sure I need another Kanto Remake unless it's part of some grand relaunch.

Both original on NSO and remake would be cool, but that is probably pushing it a lot. Really anything Blue/Red/Green remade/released I will take.

FireRed was my first Pokémon game. I have a lot of fond memories of it (such as catching Mewtwo with a regular Pokéball, or going to Toys "R" Us to participate in the special event where you could get Mew).

Sadly, I very stupidly overwrote my save file around 2016, deleting all of my old data, including that Mew. I've been meaning to get an Action Replay or GameShark for the Game Boy Advance so I can get those Pokémon back, but I've just never gotten around to it. Maybe one day.

But ah, if only Game Freak could allow for more than one save file on a cartridge at a time. That way, I would not have to overwrite my old save file if I wanted to play with a different starter Pokémon.

Hoping this comes to NSO at some point. I genuinely think that OG Red and Blue will be added this year.

I played both FireRed and LeafGreen to death, and they still hold really special memories growing up. Gen 3 in general was a really impactful experience as a young gamer.

I would love to see them added to NSO, but we're still waiting on the OG versions! At this point it could be another 3 years before we see FR/LG added to NSO.

@AStupidID Totally agree, now that Nintendo has waited so long to add R/B/G to NSO. Releasing them right around the Switch 2 launch would definitely be an exciting tie-in.
