This week's data for the UK's boxed charts is finally with us and we are seeing a slightly quieter week from Nintendo this time around.
As we have come to expect, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was once again the highest-selling game on the Switch. This week the title only made it to fourth place however, after a strong start from Hogwarts Legacy and the continued success of both God of War Ragnarok and FIFA 23 meant that even the likes of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet didn't make it to the top ten (Violet lands in 13th place, while Scarlet sits at 19).
Of course, it's not all doom and gloom from Nintendo. Chart-favourites Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nintendo Switch Sports and Minecraft continue to sell well, while the week also sees the surprise return of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe to the top ten.
This is likely due to the game's physical edition recently dropping in price at many retailers. We have seen the same trend for a few other Mario titles this week, contributing to booming numbers for Mario Strikers: Battle League, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury and Mario Tennis Aces, all of which have soared up the charts to land in 12th, 15th and 17th places respectively.
Here's your look at the full UK charts:

Animal crossing and SMBUD back in the top ten.
I have still not watched this game. I am still in Arceus.
I own Pokemon Violet (bought as my son's Xmas present) but I've been waiting for the performance patch before starting it. Does anyone more in the know have any more information on when it's happening? Or have they been radio silent?
@Jey887 : Announced for "late February".
Get that new Mario Platform game ready Nintendo, the time is coming soon. 😊
FIFAAAAAA!
** shakes fist **
Regarding NSMBU Deluxe, I do know my local Tesco's was selling the game on clearance for £17.50, so perhaps that is where the bump is coming from.
Good to see Hogwarts doing so well. I am hearing it turned out great. Looking forward to playing eventually.
????
I thought these charts were physical only as Nintendo doesnt report the digital sales?
@MS7000
That must be it. These charts are all retail-only so eShop price reductions will have zero impact on anything.
@Bunkerneath Yes Nintendo digital isn't included so that reasoning doesn't make sense.
Why don't you post the Top 40?
Some interesting data from GamesIndustry.biz:
Harry Potter is the 26th biggest video game franchise in the UK, just behind the Forza series but ahead of The Legend of Zelda.
Weird to think Harry Potter is so big from a gaming perspective or how small Zelda is.

So in other words. NSMBU Deluxe outsold GTA V last week. That’s wild!
Looks like Twitter isn’t real life and tweets that the silent majority (60-70% of people) agree with doesn’t have any effect on the purchasing decisions of 90-95% of people interested in a game, even if the loudest people on the internet try to boycott it and harass people for enjoying the game. Coverage of Gamergate 2.0 and the game itself should reflect this reality.
The banner for this news is everything.
Hogwarts Legacy! So glad to see it is doing well, even if I knew it would. Avalanche definitely deserves it for the amazing work they did!
I'm also willing to give praise to a game that was actually somewhat finished and had a shocking amount of love and polish poured into it on release, unlike some others.
@Jey887 There is a February patch incoming but there has been no promises to address performance. It says it will fix some bugs and add new features. A lot of what people complain about are graphical issues which seem pretty fundamental to the way the game was made rather than being 'bugs' so I doubt those will significantly change. You can wait for the patch if you want to hope, but even if it doesn't change much, it's a very fun game as is; for me the graphical jank reduces it from a 9/10 game to a 8/10 game but it doesn't really change the gameplay and unless you have a low tolerance for graphical and framerate imperfections, you get used to it fairly quickly.
@Euler so a storyline with antisemitism baked into it from a developer who was an alt-right YouTuber, and a creator currently engaging in a massive war against trans people should all just be ignored?
All this news confirms is that people are willing to ignore the despicable acts of some if it means they get to play a fancy new game. It's gross.
I wonder what prompted the animal crossing jump?
@Otoemetry 100% agree with you, really sad to see that people continue to put simple entertainment, not even a necessity, above the actual harm done by the people who make said entertainment. Good luck saying that in a NL comments section though, these places get absurdly transphobic very quickly
@Euler “Twitter” just sounds like a dogwhistle for “marginalized groups I don’t like”. Plenty of Jewish and trans people have been telling y’all not to buy the game due to the antisemitism in it and the creator being a TERF but you guys would rather support your generic wizard series than support people in need.
@soupwoman Nintendo Life users when trans people: 😡😡😡🤬
@Otoemetry Thank you. It feels like I’m going crazy with how many people I know are getting the Deluxe edition or whatever just to play the wizard game early. Those kinds of people don’t do that with other games.
@tobsesta99 I'm genuinely saddened by the reaction to this game, I thought the LGBTQIA+ community had evolved a bit but actually what I've seen of queer folk actively antagonising trans people (over this game) has really made me wonder if we've got a community at all.
Like, I get why people love Harry Potter; I was one of them, my gran had all the books and we watched the films together before she died so I have emotional attachments to the series too... but you can't ignore the pain inflicted on an oft marginalised minority, JKR has poisoned the franchise for so many and to see how the blatant antisemitism (in the story of the game) is being hand-waved away is incredibly illuminating. I guess the "culture war" will continue in earnest 🤷🏼♂️
Hogwarts Legacy is an awesome game. Having so much fun with it on PC. Can't wait till it comes to the Switch, being able to play that on the go will be a treat. 😁
The usual Nintendo regulars in the top ten as well 👍🏿
@FishyS It's the framerate more than the graphics. I'm playing my 3DS as I type this so graphics don't bother me. I'm not a framerate snob either - 30fps is fine. I just can't handle inconsistent frame rates.
I might just start playing and see how it is. It'll likely take me a few months to complete anyway so the patch will be released while I'm playing.
@Otoemetry @tobsesta99 Jon Stewart (the first person to accuse JK Rowling, a persistent opponent of fashionable antisemitic boycotts, of antisemitism) and the Campaign Against Antisemitism denied that the game is antisemitic. The developer in question left the Hogwarts Legacy team two years ago. Expressing opinions 60-70% of people agree with (that rapists shouldn’t be in women’s prisons, children shouldn’t be given experimental hormone treatments, and transgender people shouldn’t be mistreated) is hardly a « war on trans people ». « Twitter » means just that, an angry minority of people that spend too much time online versus the overwhelming majority of consumers that don’t care one way or the other. And much like every other manufactured controversy, boycotting Hogwarts Legacy has done nothing to help a single person in need.
Rather than being mad at people for playing a video game, you should be grateful that (unlike literally everyone to the right of Kamala Harris) this is the first time you’ve ever had to deal with the art-artist separation dilemma. Take the time to check your privilege. I also wonder why the buck stops with Rowling. Why not also boycott stores that sell Harry Potter books or games, platforms that publish them, companies that publish their games on the same platform, and any gaming site that reviews the game?
@Otoemetry Life is gross.
You cannot blame fans of a series of books and movies for liking a game.
Shakespeare should also be banned from all media, since he was a fricking racist man. If a games contains something inspired by Shakespeare like a reference to "To be or not to be" or whatever? Banned from sale.
75% of schools in USA should be banned because they teach Shakespeare.
@Olmectron Shakespeare wrote his works in the 16th century for f*** sake this is totally different, JKR is very much alive and spewing her hatred into the world now and we need to stop her. The only way to do that is to stop giving her a platform by buying her works, thankfully the latest films have been so crap that's she's doing much of that work herself.

@Olmectron I'm not "excusing a racist" I'm literally pointing out he wrote his works nearly 500 years ago and that he is very much dead. Way to twist my words.
Hogwarts Legacy is my favorite game right now… I’m eating it up! The development team did an outstanding job!
I also don’t understand the hate the game is getting by some people. They did a fantastic job of inclusion in the game (both npc and player based).
I recommend this game to everyone! One of the best rpgs I have ever played.
@Otoemetry Shocker a game treats Goblins in the way Goblins have been treated in fantasy since their creation. Also its funny how this "anti-semitic" stuff was never an issue or thing until the author came out as transphobic.

I appreciate there's a discussion to be had but this probably isn't the best place for it. We have gone way off-topic now. Thanks for your understanding.
