Yesterday, the Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope story trailer dropped and gave us a bunch more footage of all the characters we are going to be able to see when the game releases for Switch on October 20th. On top of the classic team, the Rabbid Lumas and the newly-introduced Bowser, the trailer looks like it's teasing the presence of another Mario all-star (if you'll pardon the pun) and she may not be quite as friendly as we've seen her in the past.
If you couldn't guess from our stellar hint above (or, indeed, from the title), many seem to think that Rosalina may have a part to play in the latest tactics game, but not as a hero.
Expressed in an excited tweet from @OnTheDownLoTho, the Twitter user posts a small section of the trailer showing Cursa (the game's main villain) snatching up the Rabbid Lumas before going all red-eyed on them and squishing them up in her galaxy-formed hand.
Watching the clip, you may well be thinking, "hmm, now where have I seen that blue eye before?" The answer may well come from Super Mario Galaxy's observatory overseer, Rosalina. That friendly blue eye certainly matches the space princess' own. "But wait, what's that in the middle of Cursa's chest?" we hear you ask — that's right, it's a star! Where have we seen a character with a star on their chest before? Boom, Rosalina again.
Perhaps the biggest clue of Sparks of Hope's Rosa-mean-a twist is Cursa's galaxy-filled arm and hand. True, blue is hardly an uncommon eye colour in video games and we guess someone else could have an item of clothing with a star on the chest, but how many characters can turn themselves into an Eternity galaxy blob? Not all that many.
If you cast your mind back to Super Mario Galaxy 2, you might remember the Cosmic Spirit Rosalina (seen below) who has a history of making herself a little galaxy-looking. So too does she have a history with growing, like, really big. The ending to Mario Galaxy proved as much, with Mario becoming nothing more than a petit plumber next to Rosalina's towering form.
Cursa's slight hesitation before pulping the Lumas may hint that there's a little bit of goodness left within her, though crushing your friends in your hands is generally a pretty unforgivable move.
The question remains as to why Rosalina has turned to the dark side. Twitter, of course, has its theories, with @Despair_ReRuns linking Cursa to the manipulative power of the MegaBug in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
Be it a connection to the previous game in the series or a load of old codswallop from the beginning, we sure are excited to find out if Rosalina will be making her galactic return in Sparks of Hope.
What do you make of this theory? Share your ideas with us in the comments below!

Rosalina became Mistress 9 like in Sailor Moon season 3.
As if it wasn't blatantly obvious from the reveal (you have Lumas and Rabbid Rosalina but not the main lady herself? Pull the other one).
I do really like how that scene in the trailer is a bit of a dark re-interpretation of the ending of Galaxy 1, I think that's brilliant.
Yeah that's her alright.
Evilina? oh boy...
Definitely her, which isn’t to surprising to be, since I kinda assumed that was the case, and also considering are companions are luma rabbits. All the mark galaxy stuff makes me want this game even more, and I was already sold.
Oh right forgot. Rosalina, why would you do this to me!
As a big Mario Galaxy guy, im obligated to buy this game to find out what happens to the best girl.
Even if she wasn't, it was so obvious that she would appear in the game one way or another. Given how she's one of the first things you think of when you combine Mario and space.
That said, it's nice to see her play a major role in something again that doesn't involve karts, sports, and parties. And as a villain no less!
Rosalina is one of my favorite Mario characters, so if she's the villain in this, I'll be sad.
But, even if she is, I must remain steady. Steady as stone (reference to the current voice of Rosalina, Laura Faye Smith, who also voices Noelle in Genshin Impact; "Steady as stone" is one of her lines when she uses her Elemental Skill, Breastplate, which grants her a Geo elemental shield).
how funny to imagine rosalina hasnt had any story relevance since the galaxy games, and to have to continue in the in mario rabbids spinoff lol
Cool to have her in it regardless of her allegiance, she's by far the best Mario chick.
This isn't even a maybe, it couldn't be more clear that it's Rosalina fighting and losing to some kind of control. Which is pretty interesting as a villain for the group to have to fight against!
I don't particularly care for these games, the first one was ok... I know people had no expectations on it. Turned out to be good so people overhype it. But this one, legitimately has caught my attention and Rosalina had to be part of the story from day 1, I'm glad they had the freedom to turn her into the bad guy.
I mean Rosalina’s kind of the villain of Galaxy 2, so…
Love the enthusiasm in those Tweets, not something you see very often on Twitter today.
With the fact that Rosalina is in the game, where’s a rabbid Bowser. Or Mario version of the new character? Everyone seems to have their opposites in one form or another.
Where’s the new donkey kong game, or a new kid icarus would be amazing
@AstroTheGamosian wait…WHAT!?!
@Rika_Yoshitake seriously the hype for the first one was worth it especially since we got a singing rabbid that roasted mario so hard it broke the internet which hopefully tom phantom makes a return.
Nah it's the evil counterpart, Warosalina.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
@BabyYoda71 What? No she isn't lol, it's bowser again. (Forgive me if that was sarcasm and it was just really hard to see)
@Greatluigi Yep, the voice of Rosalina also voices Noelle in Genshin Impact. It blew me away when I found out, since I main Noelle, and Rosalina is one of my favorite Mario characters. But I shouldn't be too surprised, since voice actors will take many roles across different games and genres.
For example, Jen Taylor, the former voice of Princess Peach, Toad, and Toadette (especially in Super Mario Sunshine), is also famous for voicing Cortana in Halo and Salem in Rooster Teeth's RWBY.
And Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi, also is famous for voicing Paarthurnax in Skyrim, and a couple of characters in the ClueFinders educational computer game series (such as the villainous Alistair Loveless III from the 4th Grade game, Puzzle of the Pyramid).
If Rosa really is evil, just add this to the list of "Switch games with stupid stories" >.>
Imagine a battle on the Observatory from Mario Galaxy 1. It would be so cool. 😁
Rosalina is absolutely my least favorite Nintendo character. She has that Kate Gosselin / Karen hairdo and it’s awful to say the least…
Wasn't Bowser corrupted in the first game, which was why Bowser Jr. was trying to abduct that one Rabbid; to try and save his Papa. That's the only way I can see Rosalina being the villain; she was corrupted like Bowser was and is not willingly doing this.
She's one of my favorite Mario characters so I'm glad Rosalina is in despite being the villian (which is most likely from the typical brainwashing/corrupted story trope if nothing else).
@FroZtedFlake I googled it, and it seems I remembered her being sort of a jerk throughout it and only affecting the story once, by stealing Mario’s hat, but I remembered it to a much more extreme level than what actually happened lol
@BabyYoda71 Ohhh I see, that makes more sense xD
I was trying so hard to remember a part where she was evil
@Fizza
If the villian isn't Rosalina Im surprised because we have lumas but not Rosalina? Seriously?!
She has to be the villian because there's no other room for her.
If she isn't I'll sell my manga collection for 50 cents
