One of the biggest surprises of the year was undoubtedly the launch of Portal and Portal 2 via the Portal: Companion Collection on Switch. Widely regarded as two of the greatest video games of all time, the ports run like butter on Nintendo's hybrid console, no doubt introducing a swathe of new players to the world of Aperture Science along with characters like Wheatley and the esteemed GlaDOS.
One of the running jokes with Valve is that the publisher is seemingly incapable of creating a third entry to their popular IP. Franchises like Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Half-Life have all more or less come to an end with their respective sophomore titles (though you could argue that Half-Life Alyx is technically the third mainline entry to the Half-Life series), but this hasn't stopped fans from requesting and petitioning for more of that Valve goodness.
One person who has recently expressed her desire for a new entry to the Portal franchise is none other than Ellen McLain, the acclaimed actress who voices Portal's main antagonist GlaDOS. In speaking with YouTuber KIWI TALKZ, she responded to a comment relating to the fan requests for Portal 3 and specifically more GlaDOS:
"Well, write in! Email Valve! You've got my blessing. Say "Ellen wants to do a Portal 3"!"
It was said in a rather joking manner, but the intent is certainly there. She goes on to explain that an actor's job is to ensure that a character doesn't feel stale after multiple portrayals, stating that Valve always provided great direction as to how GlaDOS should come across in the games. The implication here seems to be that Ellen is more than willing to take on the character of GlaDOS again and isn't particularly worried about the character becoming stale.
In a previous interview with KIWI TALKZ, Portal and Portal 2 writer Erik Wolpaw expressed similar interest in a new Portal title, stating that he would "work on another Portal in a second, but I can’t make it happen by myself".
What do you think, dear readers? Would you like to see Valve tackle a third entry to the Portal series? Fire a comment down below and let us know!

It would be weird if she didn't want a Portal 3, who would turn down the opportunity to be GLaDOS?
(and she gets paid, that works too)
I would love Portal 3, but I really want a physical of the collection
Also I would love Halflife 3 and all the previous games released as one collection on switch, but I dont think this will ever happen
I'm always torn on this.
I loved Portal and more of it would be great, but the ending of 2 was perfect in terms of Chell's story. It'd feel against everything that happened to have her dragged back in again. I guess you could play as a robot, maybe the whole game be Co-Op playing as Atlas and P-body but I don't think you'd get the same joy of defying and winding up GlaDOS with those two. I'm sure there's a clever way around it all, though I can see why it's not been done yet.
I'm half joking when I say this, but Portal 3 already exists. It's called Lego Dimensions.
It even ends with a GLaDOS song written by Jonathan Coulton.
I can see portal 3 as a sequel to the portal 2 co-op mode.
Not so much the singleplayer story tho.
A prequel might work, AFAIK portal bridge constructor is technically a prequel.
That lady is asking the wrong company for a part 3 to a game series.
She'll have slightly better luck asking for Portal 2; Episode 2.
Still want to be able to play HL: Alyx anytime soon, tbh! (Hurry up with PSVR 2, Sony!!) On the other hand, i loved Portal(2) back in the day, so i would cheer at a third one..
However, Valve can't count to three. We all know this.
@sanderev Does that mean the Steam Deck 2 would be the next and last hardware they'll ever make?
@Serpenterror Unless it comes with Half-Life 3. I am not holding my breath, though.
This idea is a triumph!
Voice actress wouldn’t turn down a job.
Portal 2 was a fine ending, no need to make a sequel. Why is the gaming industry always so focused on sequels… more so than even movie and tv shows
It's a nice idea but remember everyone: Valve can't count to 3!
Portal 1 & 2 are some of the greatest games of all time.
If you haven't played them, get the collection NOW!
@Zeldawakening It would totally depend on the content.
The jump from portal 1 to 2 was great - sequel that took the concepts of the first game and built on them in every way, while also introducing new things that fit perfectly.
Supposedly, a new game in that universe may be in the works-I remember Portal 2 was originally going to have an "F-Stop" mechanic, instead of bringing back Portals; there've been rumblings that a game using this mechanic is en route.
What!? A person made GlaDOS voice!?
I would not mind a Portal 3, especially if GLaDOS returns. Last time I heard anything from Ellen McClain, she was at a convention, reading a fan-written letter addressed from GLaDOS to Princess Celestia from MLP about the topic of friendship; she was asked to read it like GLaDOS. Of course, another user on YouTube then modulated her voice to make it sound more like GLaDOS.
Still, it's glad(os; get it? ) to see that Ellen McClain is interested in a new Portal game. Maybe if we can get some of the people from Half Life to express interest in Half Life 3, Valve will end up making it.
What I’ll remember from this is: they’re not working on a new Portal game
No thanks…Portal was much more than just the mechanics and the story they told with both games was really well told and ended perfectly. It’s not Portal without GLaDOS and I don’t see how you include her without it being a continuation of the co-op story from 2 or a prequel, both of which I don’t think are necessary at all. There’s people way more creative than me who could probably come up with something great to continue the story but for me I’d rather they come up with something completely new, there’s nothing wrong with leaving things on a high
I wonder if Valve can break the curse of 3
My guess is that if we ever get Half Life 3, it will be a fusion of Half Life and Portal game mechanics and will make a Portal 3 obsolete. They could even have GlaDOS. Maybe she added a copy of herself to the Borealis.
If not that please put her in more games other then portal.
Just finished Portal 2 yesterday and I say the more Portals the better!
@Serpenterror Steam Deck Alyx
Only if Wheatley also returns. lol
I meet her at TI and saw her on a panel at ... some con? I think it was PAX. I mean you can't tell much from limited interactions like that, you might catch them on a good/bad day, but she seemed wonderful. Like Reggie, someone who really understands their place in the zeitgeist and will ham it up for the fans anytime she can.
@Kimyonaakuma
She owns GLaDOS for the most part. She unrestricted rights to use the filter and her own voice (which is why the GLaDOS voice keeps showing up in things) and can use the character itself in amore limited capacity. I'm not completely sure of terms, but the GLaDOS voice pack for DOTA, as an example, was her production before it got bundled into the portal pack.
@HeadPirate I had no idea that she had some level of ownership. Really interesting.
@Ogbert Bring GladOS and the lab to the outside. I think that would create new gameplay opportunities too.
She wants to test stuff outside, so she does, and some people get involved, and that's that.
I think there are loads of great ways a Portal 3 could provide new types of puzzles to make a fresh new game.
Where I think they’d struggle is a) bringing back Chell and b) coming up with a good story after Portal 2’s incredible plot.
Portal’s magic relies on both the puzzles and the story/characters. Just getting one of those right wouldn’t be enough. I think the latter is why we haven’t had a new Portal, they can’t come up with a good enough story.
@Trousersnake I would not count on it, if consoles get that game at all it will be very late. At this point it's like asking if S&box will be on consoles, seems unlikely.
Wouldn't surprise me if we get Portal and L4D style games made in S&box (uses Source 2) before Valve even does anything with them games.
The 1st and 2nd games were a huge success, I am making a note here that the 3rd game will also be a huge success.
The only place they need to go is space, Imagine portals in space.
