We have a turn-up for the books in the weekly Famitsu charts! Not only are there eight new titles in the software sales category, but Sony has taken a firm grasp of the top ten, with seven of the week's best sellers releasing on either the PlayStation 4 or 5.
The best-selling Switch game of the week is SD Gundam Battle Alliance, a multiplayer action RPG set in the hugely popular Gundam universe. The game has charted three separate times — on Switch, PS4, and PS5 — with the Nintendo release of the game placing in second place right behind Earth Defense Force 6 on PS4. The Gundam game managed to sell a respectable 38,634 units on its debut on the hybrid console.
The only other two Switch games amidst the top ten are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Nintendo Switch Sports, at seven and eight respectively. This is the biggest drop for Nintendo Switch Sports since its release. That means Kirby's Dream Buffet, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 have slipped out of the top ten.
Here's the full top ten for the week of 22nd August to 28th August:
- [PS4] Earth Defense Force 6 (D3 Publisher, 08/26/22) – 68,341 (New)
- [NSW] SD Gundam Battle Alliance (Bandai Namco, 08/25/22) – 38,634 (New)
- [PS4] Soul Hackers 2 (ATLUS, 08/25/22) – 31,604 (New)
- [PS5] Earth Defense Force 6 (D3 Publisher, 08/26/22) – 24,363 (New)
- [PS5] Soul Hackers 2 (ATLUS, 08/25/22) – 20,257 (New)
- [PS4] SD Gundam Battle Alliance (Bandai Namco, 08/25/22) – 17,950 (New)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 11,644 (4,802,581)
- [NSW] Nintendo Switch Sports (Nintendo, 04/29/22) – 10,576 (706,637)
- [PS4] Saints Row (PLAION, 08/23/22) – 10,013 (New)
- [PS5] SD Gundam Battle Alliance (Bandai Namco, 08/25/22) – 9,625 (New)
Software sales have also seen Sony doing incredibly well, with the PlayStation 5 selling nearly 22,000 units. However, it can't make a dent in the Switch OLED's 87,321 units sold. The Switch models are a bit more split up this week, with the OLED a the top, the regular model in third, and the Lite in fifth behind the Xbox Series X.
- Switch OLED Model – 87,321 (2,311,142)
- PlayStation 5 – 21,628 (1,629,033)
- Switch – 17,558 (18,616,044)
- Xbox Series X – 10,044 (154,575)
- Switch Lite – 8,651 (4,870,733)
- Xbox Series S – 6,682 (163,699)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 3,481 (262,312)
- New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 130 (1,188,550)
- PlayStation 4 – 15 (7,819,839)

I'm Surprised that the Series X outsold the Switch Lite in japan honestly..
anyone ask Atlus why Soul Hackers 2 is on all consoles except the best selling Japanese console?
@Bmartin001 I assume that has more to do with the lack of PS5 supply more than anything. Xbox would be the best alternative and its more easily found
I want to see what the PS5 numbers are next week after the price increase had kicked in?
Weird seeing this many PlayStation games in the charts, this looks like something you'd see in 2015 when Sony had the PS3, Vita and PS4 out at once and there was no Switch. Should be back to normal next week when most of these games drop from the top ten and the regular Switch titles jump back up. Splatoon 3 comes out next Friday as well so the week after that we will see that consistently pop up.
@Mando44646 Because Atlus and logic don't go together
@GVIL Unlike the other regions where that price increase was effective immediately the price doesn't go up in Japan until middle of September so I think we won't see whether that has a massive effect on sales until a few weeks from now
First decent week for Playstation in Japan in ages, good for them. A shame Atlus didn't put Soul Hackers 2 on Switch, would've been a day 1 buy for me. Oh well, gonna wait for the inevitable port.
@Sam_ATLUS
Sweet as mate8
That will be an interesting week when it does.
@GVIL Indeed. I'm curious to see if that will have a proper impact on sales going forward. A couple Japanese Twitter users wanted FF16 to release on PC after the price increase got announced so going into next year I'm curious how much that will stop Japanese people buying a PS5 and FF16 as that's one of the big titles for PlayStation in Japan. Time will tell but I have some fears it won't help what has already not been a great performance for the PS brand in Japan over the last few years.
Crazy that top ten has 4 new games across 8 spots.
Amazing switch sales, I'm guessing this was the splatoon oled edition which bumped up the numbers. Looking forward to seeing splatoon 3 sales in 2 weeks time.
Splatoon 3's launch is imminent and will be huge.
Calm before the storm right now.
Those are low numbers [50k combined] for Soul Hackers for two platforms and all that marketing. SMT V on one platform on the Switch did way more.
People mainly defending are on copium like saying it did better then TMS which is a hilariously low bar and a widely agreed flop
Wow I think its been years since I saw this many playstation games on the top 10 japanese charts.
Good job Sony for the surprised comeback. Minecraft is actually off the chart this week for the first time in a long time and Switch only had 3 games on there. Keep this up and maybe PlayStation will dominate again.
With the narrative on the site for PS consoles, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was pushsquare.
But I guess with that site foregoing Japan updates entirely (since PS4 and 5 haven't been the top sellers in some time) someone needs to fill in the void and NL is more than happy to do it.
@GVIL I betcha the price increase was the reason for the strong PS5 sale this week. The Japanese audience wants to buy as many as they could before the price spike.
So the Switch sold around 120,000 consoles which is still pretty decent considering how many Switch owners are out there, and the console is over 5 years old.
@IronMan30,
And I thought it was just me, guess the core do not like the idea of a modestly powered console selling so well, and it's bound to beat the sacred PS4, and hopefully the PS2 just to wind them up....
sony hardware sales have been going up for a few months now. looks like that is paying off for the strong showing for ps games this week in japan..
i guess the rumored demise for sony in japan has been greatly exaggerated
One of those SD Gundam sales on Switch was for me!
Honestly I’d rather play EDF6 though. I wish E3 would publish a mainline EDF entry on Switch, and not just ports of the old games. Take a cue from Capcom and MH Rise!
Only time PS games are ever top 10 is the week of new releases. I see Soul Hackers flopped. Atlus said it was their "big new property" implying they expected Persona numbers... that clearly didn't happen. Should've put it on Switch. I'm not gonna bother playing it unless it makes the jump.
SD Gundam is yet another example that, when games release day and date on Switch, they outperform. That wasn't always the case. I remember 3rd party games doing significantly worse on Switch back in 2017-2018 in Japan. But now? Even 3 year late ports hit 75% of the original launch sales. It's crazy.
@Sam_ATLUS
I don't expect PS sales to drop in the short term, because although the price increase will lessen demand (that's just an economic principle), there's still enough demand to buy out all the supply.
HOWEVER.
What it will result in for the short term, is boosted sales for Xbox Series. Here's why. Let's say there's 70k ppl per week looking to buy a PS5. Price increase drops that to 60k. Say they're only supplying 40k... they still sell out the 40k. But the other 10k who decided it was too much, they may decide to buy an Xbox instead. Maybe 5k of them do. Xbox sales increase from 5k per week to 10k per week.
This is all hypothetical with random numbers for the sake of illustration, but you get the point. I think in the short term PS sales stay flat, Xbox sales get a small boost, and over the long term it costs Sony 3-5% of their total sales, but the drop won't be tangibly noticed because it'll filter down and gradually come out of the tail end of its lifespan.
I was in a GameStop in Canada and asked an employee about the ps5 price increase, since it’s been a big deal and people mention it a lot on this site, and was curious and thought it would be a big number. He said it was going up 20 dollars, and not changing in the states. 20 dollars isn’t really much is it? Are other countries being hit harder? Based on the internet complainers I thought it would be like hundreds of dollars
@Grim It's quite varied but mostly countries in Europe and Asia are being hit quite a bit more. It is more the principal of the price increase than the actual amount, plus all of the other bone headed moves that pratt Jim Ryan has been pulling. It's just yet another anti consumer move by Playstation.
It's also in context to scalper prices will likely raise even more on the product due to the price increase. But that's a whole different can of worms to be opened.
In regards to the chart itself. Glad to see my EDF brethren are strutting their stuff. If only Switch got more of those titles besides the mediocre voxel port. I'd even take the poor man's Bamco rip off Tank Tank Tank / sequel at this point.
Soul Hackers 2 sales are less than half of SMTV sales. Huge mistake not releasing on the Switch at launch with other consoles. Not that a Switch port is guaranteed but I see it only as an inevitability to come to the console as it's only running on a slightly enhanced engine Atlus developed for Cathrine and Persona 5.
I think once Atlus launches P5 on Switch will they get a true understanding of how well their games will sell on the platform
@uptownsoul
Make that 10+ million
@uptownsoul
Splatoon 2 has sold 13+ million. Not seeing how 10+ million for Splatoon 3 is impossible.
