Update [Wed 7th Sep, 2022 11:40 BST]: Well, false alarm folks! The Illumination Studios website has been updated once again, reverting the Super Mario Bros. Animated Film's release window back to 'Spring 2023'.
We're not sure what happened here, whether the 'Holiday 2023' was a mistake or prematurely announced, but regardless, it looks like we can expect to watch the new Mario movie at some point during Spring next year... For now.
Original Article [Wed 7th Sep, 2022 04:45 BST]:
Following a rumour earlier this week about the Mario movie's official title, it seems there have been a few more developments.
As spotted by GoNintendo, the Illumination Studios Paris website has actually made some adjustments since Monday. Firstly the name has now been changed to Super Mario Bros. Animated Film - suggesting it's still a working title. And in addition to this, the same page says the film will be arriving "in theatres holiday 2023".
WAIT, WHAT?
Yes, that's right folks, the new date written down is seemingly for the end of next year. What makes it even more confusing is the fact the poster next to it still has the old release date of "holiday 2022". Hopefully, "holiday 2023" is just a mistake.
The last official announcement earlier this year was passed on by Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, who at the time said the film would be released in April 2023:
"This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait."
If we hear any updates, we'll let you know.

Hopefully it’s not correct, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they said something about a delay in an upcoming direct.
I told yall it was a placeholder. I'm betting the release date part is probably a mess up on their part
A delayed movie is eventually good….or something like that….
If Miyamoto doesn’t tweet about it like it’s a hostage situation, it isn’t true.
Assuming this is true, Nintendo is treating this movie like their video games. But film production is a completely different beast than game development.
Even if Nintendo has more creative control over this Mario movie compared to the last one (the 1993 live action one), they are still not the only ones making this.
Hollywood may get impatient and put out an unfinished product to please investors, even if Nintendo doesn't feel the movie is up to snuff.
Granted, yes, movies can also be delayed (case in point, the Sonic movie, due to Sonic's cursed CGI model), but I don't think it occurs that often.
We can only hope that Hollywood listens to Nintendo and not try to usurp Nintendo's authority when it comes to the release date of this movie.
Bake it as long as they may, I still think this movie’s gonna blow.
If that's true - about the delay, then... That's bad and really disappointing. Also, we still haven't seen anything from the film... Like, characters' or locations' designs, concept-arts...
I think its gonna get cancelled
I can't wait to watch "Super Mario Bros. Animated Film" in 3D in theaters and iMax with Dolby Digital ® surround sound.
@HOUSE ah you took the joke I was going to use!
someone strap me up I want it clockwork orange style
I don’t really have much to comment on it, it’s ether going to blow, or end up actually being a good video game movie. i hope we get a trailer soon or at least a teaser.
I still can’t believe they’re making this. The character and level designs for Mario games have always been top notch, but the lore was never really the interesting part. How are they going to try and translate that to a linear story with none of the fun of jumping over challenging obstacles? I’ll give it a fair chance to prove me wrong, though.
This movie is in development hell. My guess is that Miyamoto and the Illumunation folks are having artistic disagreements galore.
It would be interesting if it will be a success, to have more sequels with the ideas of gameplay in Mario series, eg Racoon Mario, cap of Mario, cat Mario, etc.
Can't wait to see it at this point! There's so much untapped potential there!
(But with Miyamoto's grubby hands in the pot, I'm not holding my breath! )
I would not be surprised if we see a trailer to close out the Direct next week.
If there is a tie in game (hopefully a 3D Mario game) moving the release back qould make sense if Zelda is being released in March.
If there is a game I hope it's a game where Mario and Donkey Kong are pkayable characters!
Maybe they meant the april holidays
@WhiteTrashGuy we all aren’t ready to see the trailer cause it’s gonna break the internet.
I feel like it probably is just an error, though at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if it actually is delayed again.
The real Mario movie was the friends we made along the way.
Any day this movie comes out will be a holy day. Looking forward to it.
Well there are many holidays in 2023. For example, April 7 is Good Friday, which is a holiday.
I'd wait for Nintendo's official word on this one. This is weird and I hope Nintendo addresses this ASAP. There's no way to judge this movie when we haven't seen a single screencap or concept art but at the very least it's something I'm curious to learn about. Maybe the teaser trailer coming soon isn't a sure thing after all unless they announce another delay or not at the end of it?
Maybe a game is delaying it. The purpose of the movie is to convince more people to buy Nintendo hardware so there's probably a tie-in game but Nintendo is very careful about timing of mainline Mario and mainline Zelda on the same platform (e.g. 5 month gap between 3D World and Skyward Sword HD, nearly 8 month gap between BotW and Odyssey).
So for example a BotW 2 delay could delay the Mario movie tie-in game which then delays the movie.
I can't wait to see a first trailer during the Nintendo Direct this fall! It's gonna break the internet (do people even say that anymore?)
@mereel I think Nintendo refuses to put a big massive group dance number at the end...
I wouldn't be shocked if this movie is to be delayed again but they jumped the gun because Nintendo hasn't said anything first
No, just a typo. Good. Not surprised. The wait for the teaser is still on!
I have a soft spot for the 90s cartoons. They were just different and similar enough to the world of the game to be fun.
Would prefer a series of 20min episodes. Also easier to digest for younglings.
Something BIG must be in the works for spring 2023. There seems to be an awful lot of attention focused on that time frame.
I am REALLY excited to see what Chris Pratt sounds like as Mario...
(I can kinda see jack black being bowser though)
I knew this was a simple case of a webmaster being incompetent with their information. Every time the gaming news media makes too much noise about the website changes, the webmaster would be like, “Oh darn!”
I knew it was just a typo. I'm sure if they delayed it again, Nintendo and Illumination would've officially announced it.
