September 2022's Nintendo Direct opened with the official reveal of Fire Emblem Engage, a brand new Fire Emblem game, which is releasing next January. And, in the days since, the official Japanese Fire Emblem Twitter account has been sharing clips of some of your future squad members in combat — and it looks pretty darn beautiful.
First up is the main protagonist, who the internet has dubbed 'Colgate-chan'. They're actually called Alear — not quite as catchy, is it? — and they're a Divine Dragon. This short snippet shows our red and blue-haired hero inflicting a critical hit on his opponent, and from the animation to the beautiful colours, we're impressed.
We've also met Vander, a paladin and a Dragon Guardian. He's the one who's been looking after Alear, who has just awoken from a 1,000-year slumber and is your typical strict, serious old-man type.
In a very different location to Alear, Vander also takes charge and can be seen in motion in combat. The environments look much more detailed, and Intelligent Systems seems to be really leaning into those critical hit animations!
The latest clip is of Clan, a mage character who's as cute as a button. Except when he's throwing fire at you. We got to see both Clan and Vander — along with a whole bunch of other characters during the reveal trailer — but this gives us a closer glimpse at their skills.
In another new indoor location, we're hugely impressed by the fire effects and the lighting, which seem like a significant step-up from 2019's Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
So far, Fire Emblem Engage is looking rather good, and we can't believe we've only got to wait four months to get our hands on it. It launches on 20th January 2023, and we already know roughly how much space it'll take up. You can snap up your pre-orders for the game, including the Divine Edition (if there are any left!) right here:
How do you think Fire Emblem Engage is looking so far? Engage with us in the comments!

I don’t get what’s so stunning about it. It’s too colorful. It looks like a mobile game.
Animations are copy pasted too.
It looks cleaner for sure over previous Fire Emblem games, but it's not that much of an upgrade. If I didn't know already that this was FE, I would have assumed it was Genshin Impact
Looks really clean. This will be a nice game to kick off next year.
Probably going to be my first game purchase of 2023. Looks great!...besides the main character looking like Colgate given human form but I can live with that!
@Axecon Have you played any of the GBA entries? This look as a direct 3D homage to them.
@LUIGITORNADO that's what i thought when I watched the direct announcement. Couldn't accept it was a Fire Emblem game until the title appeared.
Christ, I'm sounding like the naysayers who cried over the look of Wind Waker. And that is still my favourite Zelda, (where's the switch version gaddamnit)
Agree, this looks beautiful. A contender for the best-looking anime-inspired game on Switch, IMO.
Looking good, although I want to see more of the exploration part of the game. It's crucial for me to know if there'll be more than just one area to move around, this series needs to become more RPG, imo!
I'd rather have it be 2D but with snappy or no loading and 1080/60.
I never played a Fire Emblem game because of good graphics. But yeah..can't catch the eyes of the mainstream without some pretty looks apparently. No matter, I will play this day one for sure!
@sorraks I have! Blazing Blade was the first game I played. Tbh, I've only played that one, Sacred Stones, and Binding Blade. Engage really does feel like more of a callback to the GBA/GC era which is a good direction for the series (kinda like how Three Houses was a callback to the Jugdral/SNES era). I was never a fan of the direction Awakening & Fates took.
@LUIGITORNADO The animations aren't copypasted though. They're also more refined and overall the game looks great - it's a vast upgrade over Three Houses in terms of clothing and character design as well.
In general it's looking amazing.
@Axecon It's a shame if you missed Awakening tbh. Fates had fun gameplay but garbage story, but Awakening was just overall incredibly solid as an entry. Definitely give it a try if you get the urge to play some Fire Emblem.
Also, Awakening/Fates/Three Houses/Engage are following the same path. The Awakening direction is the path the franchise went down, and the path that saved the franchise. While I enjoyed the older games (especially Blazing Sword which is my favorite older entry, Lyndis represent), the newer games are simply superior. Three Houses was a bit of a miss for me personally but a solid entry in its own right.
It looks fine, it will be good, the main character is a bum, Alana continues to be stun-locked by everything she sees.
@Dom_31 what's even more funny is it's easy to see that straying from the path of "what's the most popular style" is what almost destroyed the franchise. The DS entries were very unpopular because the artstyle sucked hard. Awakening revitalized the entire franchise, and it's been going strong since.
(by unpopular I don't mean their sales sucked - the sales were just about in line with expectations, but there was no growth which meant the franchise, after many years without noticeable growth might not be viable for the future. Awakening changed that, propelling the series from an avg of 200-400k sales per game to 1.5m+ sales per game with Awakening having 1.9m, Fates 1.6m and Three Houses hitting 3.82m as of 31/12/2021 ).
@Dom_31 It’s really leaned into weeb crap lately.
Looks like a huge step up from Fire Emblem Awakening. At least this time they had feets.
quite an improvement to the first one which looked rather poor imho. But the main character design looks super cheap... luckily it's just the player character that looks like it's from a gumball machine
I really loved Three Houses, and I hope this pulls it off as well.
@LUIGITORNADO Considering how most phones are more powerful than the Switch, is this a compliment? 🤔
Glad to get a mainline FE game. Not knocking the Warrior type games but I just can’t get into them.
I wouldn’t say the visuals are stunning but they look clean and, most importantly, the game looks fun. I’m looking forward to this in January.
Looks great! January 20th can't come soon enough!
Definitively a day one for me, but I agree with some comments that it is too colorful and the main character design is a big miss. Hope it has different routes available as in Three Houses for the replay value. Have +300 hours on that one thanks to that and the maddening difficulty. Loved it
@LUIGITORNADO Animations are not copy pasted my guy. Not sure what footages you're looking at.
This looks great, to me.
@LUIGITORNADO Where do you see copy pasted animations? You haven't even seen that many in the first place.
Editorial, not news.
Stunning? Alana, it looks crisp, sure, but come on. Plus the main character...is a Two-Face toothpaste head.
Looking pretty good, though it'll be awhile before I get to this one. I'm a bit behind on my Fire Emblem titles. I still need to play Three Houses and played Shadows of Valentia not too long ago.
this will look amazing in 4k on ryujinx or yuzu, sucks for you those will play it on switch, you'll be playing this in 720p25fps
@LUIGITORNADO it’s “stunning” because combat wise it looks way smoother then 3H
@OthmaneAD we get it you will pirate day 1 for “game preservation”. I’ll enjoy the game on the intended platform without any emulation delay. Sucks for you.
The art direction is great. I think it is also great they made the game colourful, especially after Three Houses. The main character looks astoundingly good, for how weird he looks. He really grew on me. The gameplay seems to be Fire Emblem, the way I like it.
This surely will be a fun and enjoyable early game of 2023.
@LUIGITORNADO The series has always been “weeb crap” lol. I know this might be shocking for you, but 90s style anime character designs that old FE art style was is still “weeb crap” for that time period.
@Slasher the two clips showing an enemy falling back in the same format.
It’s fine. I’m nitpicking. I just don’t see what so pretty about it. It’s just too clean for my tastes.
@Arawn93 someone needs to make a FE game that’s the opposite.
@OthmaneAD Yeah but that means you'll be playing a modify version, not the original one that the creator intend it to be. The game was not made with those enhancements in mind.
I’ve tried to play other FE before (Awakenings, etc) but they never hooked me. Problems with story more than gameplay really. But I’m just so disappointed they’re not keeping in the style/tone of Three Houses (which I adored).
I mean, the series deserves the space to go in a new direction (or a return, really) but I for one, am sorely disappointed.
@Serpenterror yeah, because if they release a switch pro next year and this game will be in 1080p60 you will say the same thing?. Also, no. you're not modifying anything just upscaling the resolution and better fps. The definitive experience
@Arawn93 because emulation is piracy? very funny
@Deady
This^
I think it's a beautiful thing to see switch owners that aren't jaded yet, and I was a lovely thing to point out.
As someone who only ever had Ninty consoles, it's kind of a blessing to see the beauty in games, even if they aren't 60fps 4K like it's competitors.
Also enables you to enjoy games that would normally put people off because of performance issues.
Not saying that it is a good thing that Switch has so many games that make it chugg, but being able to look past a few frame dips, or rough graphical edges for an otherwise stellar game because you don't know any better is nice. Ignorance is bliss as they say.
@Arawn93 Personally, I don’t see what’s weeb about it. Is it just because of the anime aesthetic? That’s just aesthetic. A lot of the more “weeb”-considered themes are largely absent in FE, though I am pretty biased towards Three Houses. I can’t speak to Awakening or Fates.
I feel like they are capitalizing on FEH's success and can't help but joke about how all the talk about "rings" and "engage" is because they will allow players to marry all the waifus and husbandos they turned the past characters into
@sorraks This is how I feel as well. Engage resembles the GBA entries much more than any other Fire Emblem game released since then. There's just something about how the game feels as it runs, the way battle transitions are handled, the overall art design, etc etc.
I can't put my finger on it exactly, but this game more than any other sequel feels like the old GBA games I used to love.
@Nanami_Ataraxi I have had every Nintendo and every PlayStation. I’ll go a few weeks without playing Elden Ring (PS5) and be taken aback for a minute when I turn it on because it is just so gorgeous that I sit here staring at it spinning the camera around. Not everything needs to be Elden Ring. Most looks work as long as the visuals match the story tone and gameplay. It’s a matter of overall style. Personally I find the fire effects in this trailer to be a little /too/ realistic for FE. That and the realistic movement on anime style characters seems dissonant, but it’s fire emblem so the gameplay is guaranteed to work and I am sure that I won’t be here, 300 hours in, worrying about how the magic effects are rendered.
If this v-tuber doesn't bring Gawr Gura to help defend I'm not buying.
@OthmaneAD Well yeah cause it's still made by them. When they add those enhancements which they intended, it'll be great. It has to be from them cause it's their work. When they enhance it, we are playing their work and see all their enhancement, when you're playing the emulator you're only playing the emulator enhancement which may not be of the same result. It's not from the vision of the creator of the game it's just emulation crap plaster on it.
@Korgon
I am so stoked for this title even the goofy main characters design doesn't bother me. Also I love the excessive color saturation.
@LUIGITORNADO
Breaking news. Coffee has caffeine, and water is wet.
Anyway, I think this game looks great. I don't care too much for the lead character design, but I'm looking forward to game. As far as having cutesy or scantily-clad characters, it's never bothered me. Japan has been doing this kind of thing for decades, so it's nothing surprising for me.
@Serpenterror when you'll try any switch exclusive in 4k you'll know how ***** the switch version looks, mods make the game look even shiner than what the devs intended, you think the devs are fine with the hardware the switch had? many games have very bad draw distance because of it, so if a mod fixes that it will be a worse experience because the switch version have ***** draw distance? enjoy your 720-480p 25fps version yikes, imagine gaming on the switch with it's very low resolution and settings, must be a ***** experience compared to emulators
Sakurai-san made a cool video about those critical hits effects/animations.
I may be in the minority, but I really like the character design. The red/blue hair mixes the looks of Ike and Marth with Roy. The artstyle is such a huge leap over Three Houses looking more like a current gen game over a HD gamecube title.
Looks great! Just hope they step up the dialogue animations that it doesn't always look like a bunch of pretty sock puppets getting ready for a group photo like in three houses/hopes.
My body is ready
Looks cool. Might get it eventually
@LUIGITORNADO I don't mean to pile on... but bro you just got ratioed. But, yeah to call Fire Emblem weebshit is like calling Call of Duty military p0rn. Just... what a bad take to think that is an insult for a series which has always gone for a very heavy anime aesthetic and generally "fantasy anime" plotline. Like bro look at Path of Radiance's art, it was done by the artist who did Samari Showdown and SNK vs. Capcom. It is full of bishonen boys, cat girls and stylized anime girls. Just a hilarious take!
If it's not to your taste that is fine, but man what an on-nose, yet strangely horrid take.
@Fizzieizzie I agree. LOVE Three Houses, but it was not the best-looking game on the Switch. It is clearly a case of a developer not used to HD consoles. And while Radiant Dawn has held up really well, Three Houses looks like it could have run on the same console (Wii) with very few compromises.
PS. I think this game looks fantastic so far and cannot wait to play it! Not big on the MC's design, but I think it will grow on me.
@Ramen756 half the reason people call FE, XB, etc “weeb” is because of “anime aesthetic” which DOES apply to the older FE games.
@Arawn93 Let manbabies have their temper tantrum. It is because the game does not conform to how they perceive games should look. I'm not the biggest fan of how the mainstream anime aesthetic looks, but just what childish temper tantrums some people have over an art style... to the point it sometimes comes across as a little xenophobic. i.e. "too many JRPGs." "the game looks too anime" and "weebshit."
Editied for clarity.
@Wexter At this point I have a harder time getting into new IPs (new to me, not new to the world necessarily) with the anime style. Not because of the look so much as the dialogue style and delivery that usually comes with it, and this tends to be worse and seems to my ear to carry more of this odd, generic earnestness when it’s the same bunch of English speaking voice actors pitching their voices up and grunting every time a character turns his head. For things I’ve been into for a million years, like FE, it’s easier to shrug it off, but I’d be ok with no VA at all, and the whole endeavor sounds more natural in JP, of course, probably because I don’t know which word is which while I read the subs.
My favorite dub of a JP property is Final Fantasy 12. FF12 was localized brilliantly and performed beautifully.
Yet westerners get offended that their style games are considered kusoge (crap game) often for the same reason. A game is more than its artstyle. I literally can’t stand Toriyama/DB artstyle yet enjoyed chrono trigger and am a huge Dragon Quest fan to this day. I play games to have fun or to enjoy the story. Not to pretend I am a failed art critic. People are so one note. One thing they don’t like and suddenly the entire product is invalidated? The real world doesn’t work like that.
This one looks pretty good but I haven't found Fire Emblem stunning since the GBA games. That pegasus knight animation is so amazing.
I don't have anything against it. Only, I still haven't finished Three Hopes, so this will be a long time in coming for purchase.
I wish the whole game could look like that pre-rendered Marth cutscene, he looks absolutely gorgeous. And I'm not usually a Marth fan. But we're not quite there yet I guess.
I've been against the idea of GBA remakes in 3D because I think those games already had the perfect style. But I see what people are saying that this is carrying on that spirit. And I feel bad for anyone finding this "too colorful". Go look at a dusty field on an overcast day to cleanse your palate I guess.
Won’t fool me again, after all the hype for fire emblem 3 houses I decided to buy it, and it was such a boring game, what a waste of money on a game everyone said was great when it wasn’t great, now you think I’m gonna buy this new fire emblem game ? NOPE
