Bandai Namco is apparently making this summer one for PlayStation platforming remakes! Pac-Man World: Re-Pac is out today on Switch, and — following on from Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series — shows the Japanese developer is acknowledging and showing a little bit of love to some of our childhood favourites.
Early reviews have been dropping all week, and while we're working on the NL verdict, we wanted to share what others think of Pac-Man's return to 3D platforming. We'll let you know what we think as soon as our review is up and ready!
So far, there's only one Switch review at the time of writing this, from Pocket Tactics. The outlet gave the game a disappointing 5/10, saying that other platformers have already done everything that Pac-Man World does better:
"That’s the lingering question that I take away from playing Pac-Man World Re-Pac, the millionth-or-so remaster of a classic 3D platformer I’ve seen in the last couple of years, where exactly does the remaster train stop? I loved Donald Duck’s Quack Attack, another classic PS1-era platformer, but does it warrant a remaster? Spyro and Crash, I get, but when we’re reliving Pac-Man’s mediocre-to-good 3D adventure, I wonder whether the time and money might be better spent on a new IP."
Our friends over at Push Square were a bit more generous, giving the game a 7/10 on PlayStation 5:
"Pac-Man World Re-Pac is a fun look Pac in time to an era where 3D platformers were far more prominent than they are today. While it doesn’t quite outclass some of its contemporaries like Crash Bandicoot Warped and Super Mario 64, Pac-Man World isn’t one to miss if you’re looking for another solid 3D platforming adventure."
Destructoid felt similarly about the remake on PS5, also awarding it a 7/10:
"With the lower-key stakes (coupled with a lower-key $30 price point), and a firm consistency with level design, Pac-Man World Re-Pac still kept me interested throughout. I’m not sure Pac-Man World Re-Pac is going to lure in many more fans, but the ones it already had should be happy with this new packaging."
God is a Geek reviewed the game on PC. They gave the remake a 6.5/10, citing the disappointing collectibles and underwhelming arcade-style levels don't help Pac-Man to stand out from the pack:
"The level variety is certainly nice, but the fairly unimportant collectables and disappointing arcade-style levels let the game down. If you're a fan of the hungry yellow puck you’ll probably have some fun with the remake, but don’t go thinking it’s an essential purchase otherwise."
Digitally Downloaded brings us back to the PS5, and they gave Re-Pac a solid 8/10, acknowledging that it's more for fans of the original and those nostalgic for '90s 3D platformers:
"When I find that my complaints largely have to do with wishing there was more content in a game that is already perfectly sufficient, I know that I’ve had a good time. The original game sold 1.5 million units, was well-received by critics and justified a number of sequels. Bandai Namco is most justified in trying this on to see if there’s room to revive the Pac-Man World property."

I remember having a bit of fun with the game when I was young but not so much that I'm interested in going back and playing it again now, even with a new coat of paint and some tweaks.
Sounds like a nice little romp. I will add to wishlist for BF sale.
7/10 feels about right. I played through the first couple levels on Switch this morning. The controls feel very different compared to the original, so it'll definitely take a bit of getting used to. But it seems like a solid remake so far. It's 3D platforming comfort food to me. Simple but solid gameplay and a terrific soundtrack.
Sounds like exactly what I wanted it to be really. I never played it first time around but I love a 3D platformer so plan to give it a go.
Bring back the 3D platformer I say!
I misread that first review, I thought for a moment there was a Donald Duck remaster that I missed out on. So to answer their question, yes, Donald Duck Quack Attack deserves a remaster.
I think they remade the wrong game. I feel like Pacman World 2 is much better.
Eh, no thanks. If you are going to revive these old games, atleast do more than the bare minimum. Kloana was such a disappointment.
I did actually see another review of the Switch version of the game from Nintendo World Report that gave it a score of 7.5 and pointed out the option for either Resolution Mode or Performance Mode in the Options Menu. Link to the review here: https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/61323/pac-man-world-re-pac-switch-review
I got it one day early. Love it!
What I am interested in is the Switch version vs. the Xbox/PlayStation versions. How does it hold up? As a game, there are decades-old reviews from 1999 that I can get basic highlights from based on the original. But what I am interested in is how it plays on today's modern hardware.
Are they all pretty much equal? Does the Switch version lag behind, or is it a competent port? Is it about as good as it can be on the Xbox One X? What extra does the power of the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X provide? I can find none of that information; therefore, pretty much all reviews have been useless to me.
I feel like game reviews these days should place greater emphasis on cross-platform performance, especially as the Switch itself continues to age relative to its competition and as multi-platform games become even more common.
This is definitely on my wish list, but not something I’ll run out and buy today. I’ve got too much backlog for now. Someday though!
Oof, these reviews aren't particularly great. Granted, I and many other hardcore fans really enjoyed SpongeBob Rehydrated despite the poor critical reception. Hopefully the same will prove true for me here, though I won't be playing the game until tomorrow.
It's a decent game, definitely not a 8/10 or a 7/10 but definitely not a 5/10 either. I would give it a 6.5/10 for being true to the original but also manage to make it look modern enough to be playable in the first place. The lacking contents is what kept the game at this score though.
@UltraZelda64 I felt the same reading the reviews. Not many comparisons mostly due to the reviewers just playing one version. I looked it up and apparently ps5/XSX runs 4K 60fps. And switch runs 1080p docked/720p handheld at 30fps. This made me decide on the ps5 version. Same with sonic frontiers.
It seems like the guy who did the 5/10 review just didn’t want the game to get remastered in the first place.
I will get the PS5 version.
It's all about the controls to me, if they're good then I'll be there, cos I like the look of it, but not until it's dropped to £20.
@Toodles Controls different good, or controls different bad, or just controls different?
Waiting for a Switch review.
For 40 euros, I was expecting a decent port/remake of the trilogy, not just the first game. Despite looking good, I'll wait for a sale.
I never played it back in the day but I imagine I'll have fun with it. I'll wait until it's under 20 quid in a few months.
Ubisoft need to join the party and remaster or preferably remake the only genuinely brilliant game they've ever made, Rayman 2.
There's a review of this game on Push Square but not on Nintendo Life yet, will there be one?
@Anti-Matter You have the PS5 now? I still haven't seen one available in the shops.
@gcunit I would say just different, not necessarily good or bad. It's mostly just that it's messing with my muscle memory. The Butt Bounce feels especially different. There's a little more of a delay before you can start bouncing, which I don't love. Other than that, I'd say the controls are just fine even if they feel a bit different.
@OorWullie
Not yet but I have bought 3 PS5 games first (Kao the Kangaroo, The Smurfs Mission Vileaf, Instant Sports Plus) for future investment so when I able to buy PS5 machine someday, I already have the games ready to play.
These days the only video game publications I take seriously are Nintendo Life and Game Informer. IGN used to be pretty good but they're just a parody of what they used to be. The rest are pure trash.
@Jiggies id rather "too much water" than nintendolife "this game is published by Nintendo? damn it here's a bonus point for no reason at all!"
@sixrings To be fair most games published by Nintendo are, in fact, pretty damn good.
The reviews seem kinda middling. I’ll wait for the review you guys put out to make my final decision, though.
@ShockFire10
Thats an option i always love to see in switch games (or any console game for that matter) since im usually more than happy to take a small resolution hit in favour of smoother performance.
I'm not getting this because I'm fully satisfied with the PS1 version, but if you've never played the original and you like platformers you should definitly get this
@NinjaWaddleDee maybe they want to do them in order?
I would like to see a new 3D Frogger similar to Swampy's Revenge. I was surprised how good the 3D games were.
Notice how they compare it to other games, and not to the original Playstation release.
GameStop said my preorder won’t be in for another week or so. 🙁
Not an issue with a backlog like mine though!
I never played the original so this should be a fun treat when I get around to playing it.
So, it was in fact an mid game that people was only hyping because of nostalgia...
I kind of want this, but my backlog can’t justify rn. Waiting for a sale
I'm still interested in the game, but not at the current price. If NintendoLife reviews it decently I'll wait for a sale and then grab it. I never played the original, but pac-man museum was really good so I've been wanting more pac-man in my life.
Just picked up a copy. Am ready for some video game comfort food!
Last I checked 7/10 was a good score but not great.
Going off some of the comments here you'd expect to see 3s and 4s.
Man, I'm kinda shocked to see some iffy reviews for this. I'm just hoping the reception doesn't hurt it too much, especially since this has always happened when Pac-Man tries to do something new. But hey, it is a new remake for me to chomp down! : D
If you own a ps5 and a switch and you get this on the ps5 you aren’t doing life right. This game is perfect for the switch.
Nintendo life where is your review?!?!?!?!!!?!? Who is sleeping on the job?
I preordered physical but it’s not arrived yet. Boo.
I've played Pacman World 2 on the GameCube but not the first game so am interested in this one. Looks like it will be a fun 3D platformer.
@OorWullie Indeed, Rayman 2 could use a fresh coat of paint, even though it was remade and ported to so many consoles
The guy wondering where the remaster train will stop should not be a game journalist. Sounds like some dumb self entitled forum post rather than a professional reviewing a game.
@Jiggies I would actually argue the opposite. I find most Nintendo games to be incredibly boring.
@Stocksy that is how I felt about TNMT. I have it on GamePass but this just felt like it needed to be played on a Nintendo system. It felt right at home there, especially in handheld mode.
@rockodoodle 100% I did the same and the cowbunga collection too
@Switch_Pro 100% and we want the sequel to this at least lol
@sethharris1191 You're not arguing anything; you're just stating your opinion, with which I have no problem.
@UltraZelda64 Since this is actually more of a remake than only a remaster (port with graphical updates), it changes a lot gameplay wise. Controls feel "different". No exactly "more tight", just different.
If you played the original, you'll need to get used to it.
I picked up Switch version, because I suspect that will be the hardest version to find later.
Game seems decent to good for the money. Switch isn't best version but is portable.
I have fond memories of the original, so it's hard to be 100% objective.
If someone wants to remake a really fun platformer from days of old, why not Cool Spot that was on the Super Nintendo and Genesis?
@Marxally They were very blatant about it being a remaster of the first game since day 1, why would you expect otherwise?
My Wal-Mart only got one copy for each system.
If you want this game physical, don't sleep on it.
Things are changing, we're not seeing many big print runs.
It's happening with movies too, we're being pushed to digital.
Don't expect everything to be Clearance or Black Friday: only CoD.
@GamerDad66 You can buy it right now on eBay.
@NinjaWaddleDee we don’t know if they gonna do number 2 that’s why we need this one to do well so they notice it and want to remaster more
@Bratwurst35 ur just talking to talk
@Isaix wtf are u here for move around
@FlyingFoxy ***** no ewwww
@GamerDad66 it’s only 30 dollars on digital store
