The Japanese charts for the week of 25th July to 31st July are in from Famitsu, and it's a big week for RPGs and the Switch.
The top two spots are taken up by two brand-new releases this week. Monolith Soft's Xenoblade Chronicles 3 runs away with the number one spot, selling a staggering 112,728 physical copies. No surprises here, really, as the game is reviewing incredibly well and was one of the most-anticipated launches on the Switch for this year.
Coming in behind it with 28,536 units sold is Digimon Survive on Switch. The visual novel with strategy RPG elements has still sold a respectable amount, and we're happy to see it chart well alongside Nintendo's big RPG series. Nintendo Switch Sports is just behind the Digital Monsters after another solid week of sales.
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak and Live A Live continue to do well, with the latter slipping four places after topping last week's charts. And to round out new entries, Idea Factory's latest visual novel — Tengoku Struggle: Strayside — debuts in ninth place.
Here's this week's full top ten, which is dominated by Switch releases (except for one sneaky Gran Turismo 7):
- [NSW] Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Nintendo, 07/29/22) – 112,728 (New)
- [NSW] Digimon Survive (Bandai Namco, 07/28/22) – 28,536 (New)
- [NSW] Nintendo Switch Sports (Nintendo, 04/29/22) – 24,966 (623,493)
- [NSW] Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak Set (Capcom, 06/30/22) – 17,209 (217,472)
- [NSW] Live A Live (Square Enix, 07/22/22) – 14,098 (85,235)
- [PS5] Gran Turismo 7 (SIE, 03/04/22) – 12,453 (139,888)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 11,542 (4,745,609)
- [NSW] Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Nintendo, 03/25/22) – 11,201 (823,909)
- [NSW] Tengoku Struggle: Strayside (Idea Factory, 07/28/22) – 10,912 (New)
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 9,873 (2,727,866)
There's one big surprise in this week's hardware sales; the PlayStation 5 is the second best-selling console of the week. The big white box has overtaken the Switch Lite and standard Switch model by a significant margin, selling 36,237 units. It's only six thousand units behind the OLED, which raked in an impressive 42,355 sales.
- Switch OLED Model – 42,355 (2,097,719)
- PlayStation 5 – 36,237 (1,548,670)
- Switch – 20,489 (18,547,427)
- Switch Lite – 10,394 (4,827,025)

it's more than 2 but not by a whole lot was expecting more in Japan maybe they are more digital sales for 3
Considering the special edition and digital sales are not counted I expect Xenoblade Chronicles 3 to be close to 250k copies sold in three days, an amazing debut for an incredibly deserving masterpiece!
It's remarkable how Mario Kart 8 manged to sell only slightly less copies than Gran Turismo 7.
I have to remind myself that the game first came out for the Wii U years ago.
So I guess the state of play helped, after all.
Sony always wins!
Interesting that the PS4 version of Digimon Survive didn't even chart (well, not in the top 10 anyway). And to think that Digimon games rarely ever come to Nintendo consoles. In fact, there hasn't been a multiplatform Digimon title released simultaneously on a Nintendo console since the GameCube.
I wonder why the PS5 sales suddenly increased so much. It's not like some important new game has been released or like there was a sale.
@chipia more available stock would be my guess
XC3 deserves at least 10x that amount
Just ordered my XC3 copy this week, should be arriving tomorrow just after I beat the second title. Adoring this series, I can’t wait.
Seeing a series I've loved since the first game rise from obscurity to the top of the charts gives me an odd sense of pride. Now let's keep it going until it's rubbing shoulders with the likes of Pokemon and Final Fantasy.
Nintendo Switch is Dominating! It's Incredible!
@Silly_G ps4 is dead.
I hope Xenoblade 3 becomes the best selling xenoblade game.
XB3 surprisingly did not get as much as I expected. Even SMT V did better.
Yes XB3 did do better then XB2 and XB1DE launch, but it was a relatively small growth and the Switch install base has grown significantly since then especially since XB2 launch. Would have expected around 150k range which isn’t unreasonable because that was what SMT V was closer to.
Also despite some people trying to say otherwise: The marketing for Survive was crap/close to non existent. People WOULD think it’s an actual strategy game at first glance instead of a VN heavy game with the occasional strategy game
Survive getting less then 30k on a single platform after all those years of delays shows that Digimon really should have stuck with more Story games. Cyber Sleuth got over 75k when it launched on the VITA. A new story game would have sold way more on Switch and match what most Digimon game fans would want.
Switch is JRPG haven now, not only did we just got Triangle Strategy, Chrono Chross, SaGa Frontier, Live-A-Live, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 but we also got the DioField Chronicle, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core Remake, Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 3 Portable, Nier Automata: The End of YoRHa Edition, Harvestella, Dragon Quest Treasure, Dragon Quest III 2D-HD, Tactics Ogre: Reborn, Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song, SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered, Pokémon Violet and Scarlet, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, Trails of Cold Steel 1 & 2, Front Mission 1 & 2, and Sea of Stars coming soon too.
@NintendoEternity 71k between the family. Still way out in the lead. And after 5.5 years!
@chipia more ps5 are are available to buy
@mariomaster96 i can only assume it is not popular enough if it was a brand new final fantasy game the sales would be through the roof
I remember when some people was claiming that Digimon survive was going to outsell xenoblade, lol.
Go Xenoblade! Go Live a Live!
@Serpenterror you named a ton and what’s funny you also missed a ton, the Switch is like RPG king right now!
@Gasarakii It'll go on forever if I list all of them.
Nice figures since xenoblade 3 got realesed the 29 so only a few days for that number.
And last week I made a lavish prediction the xbox will outsell the PS5 in Japan by the end of their generation. Looking good so far, oops.
Japanese people must use their Playstation 5s for ANYTHING but gaming. 🤔
@PtM And why should they? People giving a 100+ hours game 0/10 just a couple of days after release is not worth listening to. Those are just angry fanboy trolls. And this isn't even a controversial release, like Cyberpunk or Fallout 76, which got review bombed as a protest because they launched as broken messes. I'm having a hard time seeing any game deserving 0/10.
I hope XC3 keeps the momentum and exceeds company expectations. A masterpiece of a game which I think is the culmination of all things that makes this series so good. With the 15 hours I've spent so far, I think that this will go down as the best game on the Switch system for me. It also addresses my main complaint about its predecessors which is the plot, characters and worldbuilding. This game is Persona 5 and Final Fantasy X levels when it comes to that regard. Also the freedom in combat/builds, as well as a much improved and coherent battle system puts the icing on the cake.
@Serpenterror Too bad most of these are just remasters of old games.
@chipia Old games that would had been lost to time if they didn't had a modern re-releases. Most of these old games were not in HD yet such as Crisis Core, Tactics Ogre, and SaGa Frontier.
@QueenKittenWriter what do you have against Xenoblade?
