While old-school Nintendo gamers might feel the NES, SNES or Game Boy marked the zenith of the company's commercial powers, it's actually the Nintendo DS which holds the position of the Kyoto firm's most successful hardware release.
The entire DS family has sold a staggering 154 million units worldwide, making it the most popular handheld console of all time – and the second most successful video game console ever, behind the Sony PlayStation 2. With titles like Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, New Super Mario Bros., The World Ends With You, Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, it's easy to see why it's such a beloved system, even today.
With this in mind, it's fair to say that an awful lot of people out there cut their gaming teeth on the dual-screen handheld, so the notion of having one hanging on the wall as a piece of art might be quite appealing – and that's exactly what Grid Studio (the same outlet behind other framed Nintendo consoles) is offering.
We were fortunate enough to be sent a sample of this product, and it certainly does look the business. And you needn't feel bad about a DS being taken out of active use because Grid Studio states that all of the devices it uses in its products were non-operational at the point of being sacrificed in the name of art. Phew!

My DS Lite is still ticking away. It's a lovely little handheld and I'm so glad I didn't sell it like my friends did.
£145 for a non-functional DS Lite and an Ikea frame?
@Kineas I know right.
We could do this ourselves.
Bigeest seller, for now
I like the idea of it, but I can't afford the price right now. And while as said above - you 'could' do it yourself. My result would not look anywhere near as display worthy.
❗️I sold my PAL glossy black DS:L and replaced it for a NTSC cobalt blue/matte black DS:L
I've ALWAYS wanted* that model and I've been using it to go through my CIB DS Collection to see what I ACTUALLY want.
I've taken about five from the shelf so my collection is now less filler.
I have also added the removed Games to my R4 Card; They were good Games but I don't need to keep them.
I'll be going through my 3DS and GBA Collection soon.
*I now want the Japanese all blue model.
Hey remember when everyone got mad that a Paul brother had made a table out of gameboys?
Hope those people are mad about this as well lol.
This doesn’t look great at all.
Price is way too steep, but the end result is really awesome.
I just like to play my consoles and handhelds.
Looks fascinating, like some kind of unearthed fossil from an ancient civilization where gaming was its ultimate downfall.
NINJA APPROVED
@BlueGBAMicro kinda looks like you did in your avatar haha
@BlueGBAMicro @Kineas
alright, build it and time yourself, and let us know what your time was worth.
anyone else misread and thought this would be a way of playing DS on the TV? like i know that already exists but this is also cool... if it wasnt so much money damn
I’m pretty sure I saw one of these on one of Odd Tinkering’s videos except it was with a PSP. It seems really cool but that price though…
@-wc- It's ok, I don't frame and hang trash on my walls, because that's essentially what it is.
Where are all the people that got mad at Paul lol. I would actually get this if it wasn't so much, because I always like looking at what is used inside of technology.
They should let you give them a DS to use so you can get a massive discount, it would be a good way to recycle ones that don't work.
@Arehexes I feel like this is a bit different because you can still find working DS units with a little searching but I see your point
The DS is easily Nintendo's worst console. The library is atrociously terrible. Very few good games.
GBA to DS, name a bigger downgrade. Best handheld console to worst.
No idea how it beat the PSP, which was better in every way, and the only time a competing handheld put Nintendo's offering to shame.
@ThomastheTankEngine Ummm... what? I understand personal preference and all, but the DS had some legendary games. Okamiden, Hotel Dusk: Room 215, 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, The World Ends With You, Animal Crossing: Wild World, the DS Pokemon games (Dimond, Pearl, Platinum, Soul Silver, Heart Gold, Black and White and their sequels), the Ace Attorney games, Professor Layton, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia, the Mario and Luigi games, the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy remakes, Elite Beat Agents, Raident Historia and these are just games I can name off the top of my head.
The DS had banger after banger. I'm not sure where you got this idea that the DS did not have good games.
Poor DS . Would rather have the consoleTBH
@ThomastheTankEngine I have given your name to the authorities.

this looks awesome, I've always wanted to have something similar but instead with a functional pc with all of its connected components spread out in a frame and all the ports on the side of the picture frame
I have a friend who used to race bangers at the weekend. Pull out the radiator, fit a water tank, reinforce the doors with whatever scrap metal was lying around - then smash it to bits against 20 other similar cars on a Sunday morning...
They used Ford Cortinas and Granadas because they were cheap and seemingly in endless supply...
These cars are considered a rare classic in good condition today, something to be treasured and preserved.
Humans never learn.
@Double-L I mean gameboys aren't hard to find, and repairing them is easier than a DS. Honestly as long as you had the motherboard a restoration isn't even that daunting of a task.
Also these kinds of artworks isn't all that new with game hardware. It just proved what me and a friend were talking about with this. People are only mad cause a Pual brother was attached to it.
@Kineas And the hours the graphic designers put into the text work and composition, buying fonts and creating visuals, using an expensive printer whose ink cartridge costs $1200 to replace. This price isn't too far off the $100 it might cost to simply purchase a print of a digital painting from an artist you like, and in that case the cost doesn't include a broken DS unit.

@JasmineDragon let me guess, you’re mad because I criticized Nintendo for going the Adobe route with classic games? Sorry, but if any other company would get punished, why shouldn’t Nintendo?
And on the DS, since you love to make assumptions about others, I don’t hate it because its casual (the Wii is a stellar console), I hate it because it has no masterpiece games.
All games that other guy mentioned are niche, and the DS in no way deserves to be anywhere near the titan that is the PS2 in sales. That’s just a fact.
@Wexter the vast majority of those are niche and those that aren’t the GBA did first and better. GBA was much better for first party games, plus all Pokémon titles are basically the same game anyways so that isn’t helping your case.
If the PSP were made by Nintendo we’d never hear the end of how revolutionary and groundbreaking it was. Since it wasn’t you gloss over it to act like the DS’s paltry library means anything.
The PSP soundly trounces it in every way, including library (PSOne Classics).
@ThomastheTankEngine You do realize the best PSP games were also niche titles right? The PSP also had a case of not quite a portable game, yet not quite a console game. Daxter, Jak: The Lost Frontier, Secret Agent Clank, MGS Acid 1&2 and Peace Walker while all fun games that were dramatically stripped down compared to their console brothers. So the same thing could apply to the PSP that the PS2 already did those games, but better? That and the lack of a 2nd analog stick was a real detriment to the best PSP games.
Not saying the PSP was not great and did not have some absolute gems! But, so did the DS. We don't need to downplay the successes of either handheld to bolster up the other. The DS sold 154 million units with killer games perfectly designed for dual-screen and portable play, while the PSP sold 82 million units on the back of a scaled-down console experience. I own a PSP and a Vita so if I thought they were bad systems I wouldn't own either... except the PSPGo was awful! I get UMDs were kind of finicky little things (it is why the Vita, 3DS and Switch use carts), but stripping it out to go all digital back in the late 00s? Not the best move.
@Wexter okay, that may be the case, but I do believe that the PSP justifies its existence better by virtue of the fact that its the first Sony handheld, and has no predecessor to live up to. Plus the media capabilities of the PSP were more revolutionary than the DS touch screen imo.
While its true many PSP games were lesser PS2 games, the DS was lesser Wii games as well. Overall the handhelds that best justify their own existence whether that be games, features, etc. would be the GameBoy Advance, PlayStation Portable, and 3DS.
I wouldn’t care about the DS’s success if it didn’t come so close to dethroning the king of all consoles, the PlayStation 2, while also outselling many superior consoles like PS1, Wii, GBA, PSP, 3DS, etc. It’s fine if you like it but I can’t say it does a very good job as a console when the other consoles I listed have masterpiece lineups, amazing features, or both. Many superior consoles deserved the DS’s sales, can’t say the DS did imo.
@ThomastheTankEngine You just didn't jive with the system. That's cool, I loved it! Elite Beat Agents is a masterpiece of funky rhythm fun! The Final Fantasy IV remake is brilliant and borderline masochistic with how difficult it gets. A remake so good they brought it to PC! Also, the DS implemented the touchscreen to mainstream consumers which is the backbone of our smart device present... so kinda a killer feature. It also introduced us to Rune Factory! RUNE FACTORY!..
The PSP was a great system and got great sales for a first try and was probably the closest anyone got to dethroning Nintendo's handheld empire (or at least the handheld that got the least of a thumping). Too bad Sony misunderstood why the PSP was successful and the Vita was basically tossed out to the market to get destroyed by the 3DS... even after the 3DS' slow start.
The DS does not lack amazing games which is my point. It sounds like you're more frustrated by how successful it is rather than the lack of games. This is fine, but the DS was released at a time when consumers wanted something more like the DS than the PSP. I love the N64 and think its library has held up better than the PSOne's (Outside of RPGs). Does not mean I'm going to say the PSOne does not have some masterpieces on it because I'm annoyed it sold so well on Final Fantasy VII and Tomb Raider.
When you just say things like "GBA to DS, name a bigger downgrade. Best handheld console to worst" which is very not true. Did we forget the Game.com is a thing? Or how you said "the DS is easily Nintendo's worst console" when I mean Virtual Boy exists. It just makes you sound bitter... and no one likes talking to bitter people which is what @JasmineDragon was pointing out. You sound bitter, and the hyperbole you use is so ridiculous that no one takes it seriously. If you tone it down from 11 to maybe a 6, people would be less likely to dismiss your opinion.
Just my two cents.
@Wexter okay, let me just say thanks for the well thought out and empathetic response. Much more than what the other generous lad gifted me with. I think you’re right I shouldn’t have been so hyperbolic with my take. While I don’t like the DS at all, I’m glad that you were able to get joy out of it. I think any console that can bring joy to someone has value regardless of whether it’s my favorite or not.
I guess I viewed it as a race and the DS to me feels undeserving of its sales due to the fact that library doesn’t appeal to me. I guess I should change my claim to say, the DS has very few games I personally like, rather than having a poor library. Games are subjective after all.
And that’s a good point regarding touch screen as innovation, as well as the Vita’s sales failure. My opinion regarding the DS’s sales aren’t going to change but I won’t claim it has a bad library anymore, just one that doesn’t appeal to me.
I am curious though. What factors are important to you when determining how much you personally enjoy a console or even game?
@ThomastheTankEngine Are there games on it I enjoy? As I get older I care less for features or online capabilities to me consoles peeked in that regard with the Xbox 360 (a great console for its time) as I don't care about "free" games tied to subscriptions or streaming services and that nonsense. I'm happy Nintendo is upfront with what Expansion Pass is, as PSN+ always felt like it was lying to me with "free" games that I'm paying $60 a year to access. I know, it's a perk and I gotta have it if I play online, it just always felt a little skeezy that it was tied to me renewing or not.
I think as long as there are more games I enjoyed playing on that console than I disliked I'm happy with it. As an example despite the crap that gets tossed at it, I don't regret getting a Wii U. I love that console, I loved my time with Xenoblade X, Darksiders II, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, and so many more. While the PS4 does not get as much love from me despite being the overall "better" console. I've loved Final Fantasy XV, God of War, Persona 5 and Bloodborne, but I just never quite used it as much as my Wii U, Switch and PC. I don't think the PS4 is a bad console, people loved it... it just always became an afterthought in my mind. Though if Bloodborne ever comes to PC I'll be a very happy man!
I think, what I'm getting at is, did I enjoy my time with it. If the answer is yes, then I'm very happy. Though if a game blows me away then it will always get a round of applause from me. I still to this day sing the praises of Phantom Brave.
@Wexter that’s totally fair to me the best kind of consoles are ones that have cool and unique features and also ones where you can built a great library to your hearts desire!
The consoles I like most are PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, GameCube, OG Xbox, GBA, PS3, Wii, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S because they fit that.
