Cuphead became an instant smash hit when it was released in 2017 on Xbox and PC, but its run-and-gun gameplay and cartoon aesthetic soon made its way to Switch, and it sounds like even Nintendo was a fan!
Given Cuphead's popularity, it's maybe not too surprising that the eponymous character made its way into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Mii costume — along with the song 'Floral Fury'. Especially after Undertale's Sans made the jump. But Studio MDHR Director Maja Moldenhauer has revealed in an interview with Fanbyte's Imran Khan that she was shocked when Nintendo approached the studio.
Moldenhauer says that she and the team were so shocked that they said words that absolutely shouldn't be transcribed, but the anecdote from Khan reveals that the team was stunned when they found out that Nintendo wanted the game in what is one of the Big N's most well-known games on the Switch.
Here's the anecdote from the interview:
Nintendo approached MDHR about adding Cuphead to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Moldenhauer described their initial reaction as an expletive she asked me not to transcribe, but added they had to “pick their jaws up off the floor” when they heard.
Moldenhauer also revealed that she'd love to see the character appear in more first-party games, but acknowledges that the boss rush gameplay and the art style aren't easy to implement elsewhere.
Moldenhauer says she would love if Cuphead could join more first-party games, but she’s not sure what other games she thinks would fit in with Cuphead‘s game design. “We already have so many ideas of our own to implement, I can’t think about integrating something else,” she says.
We think Cuphead and Mega Man would get along pretty darn well. The pair could team up and use their excellent running and shooting skills to take down more of Dr. Wily's Robot Masters. And we think Cuphead and Mugman would look pretty darn adorable in 8-bit pixelated form.
Cuphead is currently on many people's minds as the long-awaited DLC The Delicious Last Course launches on 30th June. And it's clear Cuphead's appearance in Smash was extremely well-received, given this fan tribute that we reported on last year:
Were you surprised about Cuphead's inclusion in Smash? What games would you like to see Cuphead make a cameo in? Let us know!

So essentially shovel knight 2.0 right?
I still wish Cuphead would have been a TRUE fighter in Smash instead of a Mii, but I'm so happy he made it in at all.
But I'm way more bummed that Hollow Knight didn't get Smash Bros representation. The Knight or Hornet would be absolutely perfect additions. So many great move set options.
@sketchturner At least he's not an assist trophy like Shovel Knight and besides there's more worthy candidates for a playable spot than Cuphead. Legends like Spyro, Crash, Aero, Bonk, Rayman, Bomberman, Bubble Bobble, Rikimaru, Wonder Boy, QBert, Goemon, Sparkster, Lara Croft, Doomslayer, Rygar, and Ryu Hayabusa all deserve to be playable first before anything in the 2010s do.
Assist Trophy are way more special than costumes. They have their own programmed abilities, and you actually get to see their personalities in game. I may have wanted majority of those assist trophy characters playable but at least they are more than a costume for a mii fighter.
To be fair, I think anyone’s reaction to getting their passion project in Smash would be a dropped jaw and hasty exclamations. I’m super happy that Ultimate had more indie representation in it, and I hope whatever comes next for Smash has more of it too.
@Serpenterror Am II crazy that I would have preferred him as a assets trophy.
@Serpenterror Of that list, I would only put Crash, Rayman, Bomberman, Lara Croft, Doomslayer, and Ryu Hayabusa as characters that should be fighters over the likes of Cuphead. Characters like Qbert would really only best be suited as an assist trophy at most, yeah he's a prolific character for the dawn of video games, but he's so lacking for movesets, hell Frogger would make a better fighter than Qbert, and he too would need some serious liberties taken to get him to a point where he makes sense as a fighter, and a character like Spyro has always just felt like a lesser Crash, I know his games play quite different, but the 2 series have always gone hand-in-hand for various reasons, but when you break down which one is more iconic and would make for a better fighter, it's Crash, and I'd really only prefer to get the better of the 2 if either were ever on the table.
Sell out if you can sell out, why not?
Cuphead would have made a great fighter. But sadly, you can not bring in every single character into Smash Bros. Also Sakurai's budget is limited. But, maybe someday. I would be happy. I would also be happy for more cameos. That would be a good tactic to keep characters such as Cuphead longer relevant.
