If there's one Nintendo franchise that has the potential to create a genuinely good movie, it's Metroid; with the space wars, aliens, and a lone, mysterious hero at its core, the series seems like a decent fit for a silver screen adaptation. Of course, we've already heard that the Metal Gear movie director Jordan Vogt-Roberts would like to make a "crazy" movie for the series, but now Brie Larson is getting in on the action, too.
The American actress - known for her work in films such as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, 21 Jump Street, and Kong: Skull Island - has revealed that she wants to make a Metroid film. Things started after she dressed up as Zero Suit Samus for Halloween, causing fans of the star to bombard her social media channels with admiration and share their dreams of seeing her act out the role on screen.
She confirmed her desire to work on a Metroid film via Twitter:
It's worth noting that, despite apparent interest from actors and directors, the chances of a Metroid movie ever actually happening are pretty slim; with other Nintendo franchises being much larger and better known to the public, we'd imagine that other games would get the nod over Samus' adventures given the opportunity (just like the upcoming Mario movie).
Would you like to see a Metroid movie make it to the big screen? Who would you cast as Samus? Let us know in the comments below.

It would be a difficult movie to make. Watching a lone person in power armour fumble around dark caves for 90+ minutes doesn't sound too tempting. Unless they adapt a game in which Samus has some companions.
There's a reason why the Castlevania animated series is based on part 3.
That said a good Metroid movie would probably be like a modern version of original Alien.
Brie who? There was too much talking in Other M and Metroid Prime 3 already so filling a whole film with talking people wouldn't really work for me. Not that this is going to happen.
I'll wait and see if Captain Marvel doesn't destroy the MCU story.
I'll watch Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne play Mario and Luigi.
No thanks, another game franchise would be ruined by hollywood. Also what does Samus have to do with Halloween?🤔.
As much as the setting and monsters could make for a great Alien-like movie, I think the sticking point would be the arm cannon. It’s just not feasibly going to look right and the beam would be dodgy too.
She is really good looking, and a talented actress. But there are two things Hollywood has never done right. Live action adaptations of anime and games.
I'd much much much rather a high quality anime adaptation of Metroid. Let's get Studio Trigger or JC Staff on it. But please, for the love of God, keep Hollywood away!
But why did she dress up as Samus? She should have made a cheese costume... because Brie!
@nessisonett You think the arm cannon wouldn’t look right? Think about the morph ball.
@ThomasS She doesn't look the part at all. I'd much rather a smaller, no name actress who will star in the film as Samus in the Full Suit as opposed to Samus in the Zero Suit.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Shigera Miyamoto himself is directing the Mario movie. So we are sure to get a good movie then.
What if they do the same about Metroid ? If they do, they have no chance of doing something bad.
@brandonbwii Oh man, I didn’t even think of Brie Larson folding in on herself.
So much negativity. Of all Nintendo franchises this is the one that makes the most sense it's sci-fi.
And no, it wouldn't match the game, nobody wants to see that, but you take the Mother brain ending, add in the characters from the beginning and end of Prime 3, some emotional moments from Other M maybe,I still haven't played it, and what you basically have is Aliens (the second movie) with Ripley in a really cool kickbutt suit mixed in with some Starship Troopers.
Sure, it could easily be a low budget straight to streaming fan film, but it could be really cool too. If they don't want hi tech sci-fi they could go The Guardians of the Galaxy root, action comedy. Probably more serious would be the way to go though.
And no worries on the arm cannon or morphball, have you people not seen ANY of the MCU movies, look at all the crazy stuff Iron Man and the Hulkbuster suit have done. Or the Pacific Rim movies. Or Power Rangers. Or Transformers. Sure those movies may not be to your liking but the special effects make any piece of metal do whatever you want.
I say bring it.
As long as it's rated M for.... METROID!
No offence, but she's too old now. It's obvious that we want at least descent adaptation, which would make them do at least trilory of movies, which is 6 years at least. So no.
not hot enough
@kopaka People said the same about Jennifer Aniston... Who then carried on easily with almost no visual changes for 8+ years. I'd say it could work.
@Blizzia so this is the only case sth like this really worked.
Watched Free Fire just last night, and Brie Larson would make a great Samus. They just need a decent, brave director to make it, and treat it like a silent sci-fi/horror movie, with practically no dialogue. Even mainstream Hollywood can do this - think how little dialogue there is for long stretches of The Revenant.
Keep Hollywood away from Nintendo franchises. They will ruin it
Heck, if they just made a movie with nothing but her walking around in the suit I would watch it!
@kopaka Not really, it was just a decent example Either way, usually movies turn out bad, so I'm just hoping they don't make what is usually made... Or decide to make some incredibly bad plot where they mix the world with reality or some other generic thing like that... (looking at you, Monster Hunter movie)
@nessisonett Iron man, says otherwise.
Let's see how the Mario movie does first, then we'll talk.
Sigourney Weaver sorta owned the role three decades ago... the Metroid franchise has always been transparent about the movie that inspired it. "Ridley" for goodness sake!
Why would or should the chances be slim?
As Marvel has proven, you can make blockbuster movies and make them well with second tier characters. The idea of a space bounty hunter practically writes itself as a movie or at least television series
I think she could pull it off. But it's more about the movie getting everything else right too.
Erm, you already reported this with the Tweet about Lady Gaga playing Bayonetta
Scarlett Johnson for Samus Aran
@kopaka How old do you think Samus is supposed to be? Brie Larson is only 29. Sure, that's old by Hollywood's ridiculous standards. But I imagine Samus to be in her mid 20's to early 30's. So I think Brie Larson is at the right age range
Hell yeah, that would be an awesome casting choice. This movie would also make the most sense of the existing Nintendo franchises.
@UmbreonsPapa thats why I said about trilogy of movies. When the third will come out, she'll be hitting her 40s
Normally I'd agree. I couldn't have been happier than when she was announced to be playing CM, but, being Samus as well as CM just feels a bit greedy. Totally different universe, I get it, but I think give somebody else the gig. Maybe even an 'unknown'.
@kopaka They can always plan out the series, film the movies back to back if her age would be an issue. Honestly, I think she would be good in the role. I'm not wedded to the idea. Personally, I picture Charlize Theron in the role. But I imagine her age wouldn't even get her in the discussion
I’d watch it. Those that say it wouldn’t work have no imagination.
Let's see how the Mario movie and Captain Marvel come out first...
Am I the only one who wouldn't mind a MCU-style shared universe eventually culminating in a Subspace Emissary movie??
I like Brie Larson, she is a solid actresses. The person I always had in my head was Gilian Jacobs. Comedians usually surprise you when given materials other than straight comedy and I think she is in a good spot of being proven talented but not so famous as to draw crazy studio nonsense to the movie. But if by any chance Brie Larson has the same sort of passion for Metroid that Ryan Reynolds has for Deadpool, I think that would give the project a greater chance of working out well.
How much dialogue would there be? If not a lot then you do you have any humor in it at all? Does how actress look herself really matter when the character is in a power suit mostly? Do you really need the morph ball to tell the story? Is the story about even about Samus? Can she Mad Max her way into a conflict, blow things up, then move on to another bounty job? How do you have a giant brain in a jar with space dinosaur henchman be the antagonists? Can we have practical effect metroids? Can we have Jim Henson creature shop Chozo? Please?
Well. The rights for a Metroid movie has been shopped around between distributors ever since the release of the first Prime game.
I suppose if an actress says she's game now, then we just need a writer, a director, a production designer, a location scout,
a casting director, an entire supporting cast, a complete film crew, and a lotta lotta lotta money.
Should be easy.
No she would totally be the wrong actress to star as Samus Aran.
How would the armor be done? CGI or real suit? Or a mix? The iron man movies have given me more faith in that than I had a decade ago.
At first it seems like it would make a good film. The closest film is probably the original Alien film. But then think of Ripley wearing a weird armour suit and rolling around in a ball looking for random items, and suddenly it doesn’t seem so good.
An Anime would work much better.
Damn, a live action Metroid movie would be so cool for both Nintendo fans and regular movie goers. Hopefully we see it one day!
A Metroid movie would be so cool. Just imagine how atmospheric they could make it. If it does happen I hope Samus is the only human character, at least for most of the movie. It would definitely fit the games more. I also would love if the score was actually remixes of music from the game and not just generic film score stuff.
If they have to make a movie (I hope not, Japanese Games and Live Actions don't mix) about Metroid... Please don't use Brie Larson. We have many talented actresses in Hollywood.
This is just one man's thoughts.
Oh boy, a live-action version of Metroid: Other M would be fantastic./s
Don't you need to be able to move your face to be an actor? Huh...Well maybe she could do it if Samus never takes off her helmet.
She would be perfecr for Samus!
@NintendoFan4Lyf They would fill it with unnecesary woman empowerement movements or feminist remarks. Which feel so forced and don't add any substance to the plot. Just like Netflix is doing with every show nowadays.
Marks out of two....
No! Don't you dare!...she would ruin the franchise... If there ever was a Metroid movie, make it CG animation ... it's my favourite game series of all time and I don't want it tainted with Hollywood dribble
Man, I don't care about the whole "video game movies are bad" debate, I'd sure as heck watch this.
Isn't Metroid based on the Aliens movies anyway?
@Spectra
Never say never friend. Hollywood finds ways of ruining things beyond all recognition.
If they did a movie, I'd like to see it made where Samus is in the suit the entire time, only taking off the helmet at the end just like the original Metroid.
People who know nothing about Metroid will still get to experience the reveal like the gaming community did all those years ago.
@UmbreonsPapa
I think that'd be great for a grim, experienced bounty hunter like Samus.
@InklingLegend
More like morbid curiosity.
Despite how unfortunately diminished my interest in Metroid has grown in recent time (not because of the franchise itself, but because of me), I am unopposed to this. Albeit, I hate the horror genre and I am pretty sure a Metroid film would border on that.
Keep Hollywood away from Metroid...they'll turn it into a political lecture chock full of virtue signaling garbage. They will ruin Metroid just like they did Star Wars....I mean, how do you screw up star wars?
Great for her. But I don't want her playing that role, she's just not a great fit for Samus.
I still think "Metroid" would work best as a trilogy.
Movie 1: Backstory manga + "Zero Mission"
Movie 2: "Return of Samus" + "Super"
Movie 3: "Other M" + "Fusion"
(Naturally, the "Other M" adaptation should have completely re-written dialogue.)
At this point they might as well make a Metroid movie. I love the franchise but it's not something that's filled with great character development, so as long as they hit the key points of the franchise and come up with some reasonably fleshed out plot (maybe expand upon the whole bounty hunting thing introduced in Metroid Prime 3) it could be worth a watch.
Yes! She was great in Cap. Marvel!
I would rather have Tom Selleck play Samus than Brie Larson.
