Banda Namco has published a Q&A segment with Kentaro Matano, producer of the upcoming beat 'em up remaster JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R. In the post, Matano confirms a number of things about this rerelease, including the lack of a high-regarded featuring which is sure to disappoint fighting game fans.
While Matano has confirmed that the game will have 50 characters, with 44 announced and a further six to be revealed, and there will be six different modes to play at launch — All-Star Battle, Arcade, Versus, Online, Practice and Customize — he also revealed that the game will not be using rollback netcode.
Specifically, Mantano states "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R will not utilize rollback netcode, and there are no plans to implement it at this time." Rollback netcode is the preferred choice for online fighting game fans, as it treats both players' inputs as if they were playing locally or offline, while it treats their opponent as a remote player. It's much smoother and snappier than delay-based, which is what All Star Battle R will likely be using. Ricky "Infil" Pusch's article on netcode gives a far better explanation than we ever could, so check that out.
Many fans who are currently playing the Early Access demo on PS4 and PS5 are already reporting netplay issues online.
The Q&A also reveals the beat 'em up's resolution and framerate on Switch. Handheld, the resolution will be at 1280x720, while docked it'll be 1920x1080 — both of which are pretty standard. The framerate, however, will be capped at 30fps.
You can read the full Q&A with Kentaro Matano below ahead of the game's 2nd September launch. In the meantime, let us know how you feel about the lack of rollback in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R in the comments!

This is annoying it would have been nice to have switch release for this.
30fps on Switch 🙁
No rollback netcode at launch and 30FPS... Yeah, that sucks. Also, about game's performance... Will game look hellishly blurry in handheld/undocked mode? Like Samurai Spirits/Shodown (2019) and Fighting EX Layer: Another Dash, you know...
Oh, that sucks.
I’ll stick to just getting the PS5 version then.
Yeah not buying it until a price drop then. You take the cheap way, so will I Bandai Namco.
“Go ahead, Mr. Producer” LMAO
Not surprising in the least, as Namco Bandai has shown many times to be one of those publishers/developers that simply doesn't care about roll-back netcode.
Bummer for the JoJo fans though, as a former Smash Bros. player I can sympathise v.v
Welp Steam version it is then, because this is unacceptable.
I've always wondered what the point is in even including an online mode in a fighting game if it lags so badly. If it's as bad as that clip in the tweet, hardly anyone will play it, making the lobbies dead on arrival. So what's the point in even being there?
To make things worse, it's capped at 30fps.
No crossplay, no rollback. This is how you send a fighting game to die.
A game like this I have no desire to play online so this doesn’t impact me. Will wait on a sale though. I do wonder what’s the point of this revival if the netcode is gonna be subpar.
I played online on the ps5 demo and it worked perfectly fine, I'll try some more matches tonight and see how it goes
So...how expensive is rollback netcode?
Net code doesn't bother me, but 30 FPS... I think it may be another one for the "future living room PC" pile.
@fenlix Well... I don't know about GGPO's cost, but... There are some troubles implementing it into the games' engines. And that's one of the reasons why many video game developers can't make games with rollback netcode support. But they can add rollback netcode some time later, if that's possible. You can read more about rollback netcode on Wikipedia, if you want it or need it.
Rollback in fighting games is mandatory.
Even Smash bros suffer online for not having rollback.
Online fighting games need rollback.
Guilty Gear Strive on Steam is an example of a well-implemented Rollback. I can play against a person who lives on the other side of the planet as if they were here in my house.
@JoeSooper Even MK11, a PS4/Xbox One port was 60fps on Switch....🤔
Played the demo on my ps4 I like the fighting mechanics but not a fan of the art style or the characters
@Gamergirl94
Uh.... It is?
Also, there might be one saving grace for this game:
GIORNO'S THEME
If this doesn't work for the timeline/characters, I'm not sorry, I don't watch Jojo
