Peggle's great, but there aren't nearly enough things trying to eat you. Enter Roundguard, a "bouncy dungeon crawler" that combines the pinball physics of Peggle with the roguelikeitude of, well, Rogue.
Roundguard has been out on Switch for a couple of years, but now it's getting a lick of paint with the Encore 2.0 Update, which will add a ton of new content to the game. Here's a list of the new features:
- Encore mode that unlocks after winning a run with any hero.
- New bosses: The Mad Virologist, the Mad Doctor, Greg & Carl, Bleary, Blinky & Goo, the Robotic Heart, and the Infected Heart.
- New monsters & hazards: Thirsty Imp, Strange Lab Rat, Toxic Mushroom, Doc’s Monster, Doc’s Helper, Plasma Globes, Robo Wormlet, Infected Wormlet, Sickly Valve.
- The Wheel of Woes with 32 different rules to alter the dungeon and keep you on your toes.
- Five new relics to unlock, including Endless Mode to really put your skills to the test.
- New accessibility options, including Game Speed settings and Arachnophobia Mode.
This is the fourth free update for Roundguard since its release in 2020, so if you pick the game up today (it's even on sale right now!) you can also benefit from extra playable classes, daily and weekly challenges, new bosses and monsters, and achievements.
Have you picked up Roundguard? Is it as good at Slay The Spire? Let us know in the comments!

'Peggle-like Rougelike' was not something I ever expected to read. Looks cool though.
Nice to see this one receiving some substantial updates. I played a bit of it when it first came out on Switch and it was a pretty fun time but it felt very lacking in content and replayability. Maybe I'll need to return to it one day now that there's more to see.
Fantastic news! I really love this game and encourage any fan of Peggle to get it. Especially since switch seems like it will never actually get a Peggle game.
I'm sorry, Peggle-like roguelike? Why wasn't I aware of this before?
I’ve tried the game out on Apple Arcade and I just couldn’t get into it. Its a very tough jump to start in. I did like its weekly challenges though.
Same response as the others - you had me at Peggle-like! What is this game - time to research.
Defo checking this out
Love this game its in my top 5 most played on switch. This will give me a reason to go back after a brief hiatus.
...No review of this game?...
Just sits on his hands waiting for peggle 3. Sits... And sits... And sits... And sits...
(God I miss popcap pre EA)
" the roguelikeitude of, well, Rogue."
Uhhh has the reviewer played Rogue?
@Kyloctopus I love Gamepass and Apple Arcade if for no other reason being able to try games that look like I would enjoy on the surface, but end up not being what I thought. I hope Nintendo follows the Apple Arcade model for online services. I would pay $5-$10 for access to cool indie games sponsored or incubated by Nintendo.
@shaneoh ha, no! But the procedural runs, that's pretty Roguey, right?
Had it wishlisted for awhile, maybe in a year it'll go on sale enough to pick it up as it does look pretty good and it's been awhile since I've gone on a Peggle binge.
Peggle was probably the most overrated game of all time.
@KateGray
Nah, that's only the start, these are some of the other things needed:
Permadeath
Turn-based
Item functions randomised between runs and you don't know what they do until identified or used (red potion heals one run, causes invisibility the next)
Usually people call a game a roguelike if it has permadeath or randomised dungeons, but that's like calling Super Mario Brothers a third person shooter because Mario can throw fireballs. I recommend checking out some Angband, ADOM or Nethack (or Rogue, the namesake) gameplay for and see the contrast in gameplay between them and Roundguard (or Hades, or Binding of Isaac).
@shaneoh Super Mario Bros is a roguelike
Thank you for pointing this one out @KateGray ! Looked it up, saw it was on sale and I’ve been playing it ever since! I don’t understand why Roundguard is spoken of more often. It rules!
