@PARK1755 To be fair that list isn't very long. There's like two or three good alternative kart racers on the market, and I doubt the back and forth motion of npc hazard cars is the highest thing on their list of priorities.

Well, that’s weird. I don’t play Tour but I noticed the mobile tracks usually have more ramps and stuff as well. The Switch versions, while still fun, seem a lot less exciting in comparison. Maybe they’ll update the tracks… but also maybe not due to time trial data and stuff. Who knows. I’m having fun with the course pack so far but I’m not going to hide the fact that it seems rushed.

I agree they should be moving. That was one of favourite parts on this track for killing off my mates back in the day, plant bananas on one side (loved watching their reactions and seeing the panic move to frustration)

Coconut Mall was such a crushing disappointment.

Superficial criticisms aside, they need to get rid of those ridiculous visual aids on the escalators. They weren’t there in the original, and they were only there in the 3DS version due to the significantly lower resolution (and screen size).

Moving cars on the home stretch is also a must, and the return of Miis would also be most welcome too.

I'm very OK with the cars not moving. The biggest problem with the track is that it's too difficult to trick off the steps at mall entrance, and trick off the ledge exiting the mall from lower floor. Tricks often fail to register at those two spots.

I actually forgot about it lol, I kept running into them because of my muscle memory to move the other way, nice to know why that was lol.

I’m more disappointed that they took out the Miis in favor of the Shy Guys. Aren’t they having a slight resurgence lately?

The Wii version of this was fun because they’d pick a random one from your huge list that you downloaded from other creators, or even Mii versions of your relatives. 😁

Moving cars would definitely make me like this version of Coconut Mall more. I love the more vibrant colors but the ending with the stationary cars in 8 Deluxe is lame.

This course is pretty lame anyways, compared to the best tracks 8 has to offer. Ninja Hideaway was the only track I felt was actually worth money.

Mario Kart Wii had moving cars. MKWii is superior yet again.

I think this is a minor issue in an awesome game, with the most content in any Mario Kart title, the Deluxe version not only offered 1080p and a proper battle mode, but all the existing DLC as well.

Nintendo realized it's selling potential on the Switch was massive, and a true upgrade from this or potentially new direction was better suited to their next generation Switch, so to keep the title fresh for new and existing players they announced an awesome value DLC package, which is free for online expansion pack members.

But even though people have been moaning at Nintendo to release DLC for deluxe, as it's pretty obvious Mario Kart 9 is quite a way off, they sill complain...

But again how many people are up in arms about this latest travesty is unclear, but pretty sure most people that own the game will not even be aware of the difference.

I liked them all, and am looking forward to the other waves, awesome value considering it's a full game of tracks for $25, or included with the online expansion pack.

I didn't know they moved in Tour, almost makes it seem like a mistake that they don't move in the Switch version.

I think they will be both the same, never liked them moving back and fourth to be honest, but I guess it's up to Nintendo if they think this is worth a patch, not fussed either way.

It's just a part of dumbing down of old tracks that's been part of MK8 since the very beginning, they just don't like track hazards or tracks themselves being challenging just in general anymore. It is the lack of thst element of chaos that does make this Mario Kart lesser than some of the others in my eyes.

@Expa0 : I agree. The luck based mechanics (particularly the blue shell) are far more infuriating than any track hazards.

Didn't there used to be speed boosts under the moving cars as well? I cant see those on the Mario Kart Tour vids

I’ve bought the pass so I’ll happily play the rest of the tracks but the first wave has left a bit of a sour taste. It really just seems they’re grafting content from Tour onto 8 without any effort to integrate them mechanically (no anti gravity) or graphically.

The graphics are improved over Tour, and there are differences on the deluxe DLC, the Tour tracks were made for decent mobile hardware, which we are told on here and various other forums is superior the more modest Switch chip sets etc etc...

I think they are visually different to the original Mario Kart 8 tracks, but not sure if this means they are objectively worse, as it's far more subjective than that, ie beauty being in the eye of the beholder and all that, for example somebody stated the 3DS Mario track had a more simple textured grass than the deluxe ones, but in reality it would take the same processing power to render either, so could the this be a case of the Tour tracks simply using a different aesthetic, which are then ported with a few minor tweaks.

So not so sure there is a definitive good or bad with any of this, and I have not been driving around round these tracks thinking they are awful in any way, even the most simple 3DS Mario track seems a massive upgrade over it's original version, and the Paris track looks ace.

For ages now every time this site has reported on the Mario Kart Tour updates, people have moaned why is deluxe not receiving the same treatment, they then get it and still complain, this is not aimed at you personally by the way.

I noticed the lack of moving cars the first time I played Coconut Mall and as far as I'm concerned, this is the fixed version. I love Mario Kart Wii, but they were a mistake the first time round and I'm glad they're gone.

Can’t wait for the article about Reggie saying that he pleaded with developers to make the cars move!

Update the graphics to match the rest of MK8 while you're at it, Nintendo. The courses are fun but the graphical difference is still incredibly grating to me.

Out of all of the issues I have with the Booster Pass, this isn't the biggest one.

@Yosher I really like the art style on the new tracks. They look more bright and cartoony which I kind of prefer over the more realistic look of a lot of the original tracks. Looks more properly "Mario" like to me.

@Clyde_Radcliffe They can do that in the next Mario Kart and I'd enjoy it. Right now it clashes too hard. Particularly when the characters and vehicles still have their regular MK8 looks, it clashes. Not to mention some things just look particularly bad and/or bland. I'm sure you've seen the complaints about the grass on some courses and lower resolution/detailed textures/models. That doesn't even have anything to do with the art style, that is literally just them rushing these courses out the door.

I'm probably making it sound like I hate this whole thing though. I don't. 48 retro tracks for 25 bucks? Heck yeah, that's great even with the clashing art styles. ...but I'm still hoping for Nintendo to fix it, because it does honestly still bug me a bit each time I play these tracks.

People were disappointed that an aspect from a course which they enjoyed is not featured in the MK8DX one its not really "whining" as usual while there is some hyperbole in the comments the vast majority of people critical of it have articulated why they are.

It would be great if they could add it back in. I'm also worried that this shows how they will handle other tracks going forwards.

@DeathByLasagna I imagine Tour-tracks need to deliver more excitement in a short period of time. An average MK session on the Switch might be way, way longer than on a phone and with an actual joypad in your hands, it becomes more about steering and driving and less about the fun-racer experience alone.
It indeed is quite an interesting showcase of differing gamedesignconcepts on these platforms.

As mentioned, I'm more disappointed in the removal of Miis more than the removal of moving cars.

In all honesty, that part alone with its moving cars made this one of my least favorite tracks in Mario Kart Wii, which is a shame because I like tracks with urban settings.

Besides, who drives back and forth where it's clearly not designed as a parking area?

I think it be wise if Nintendo leave the cars static for 50cc & 100cc and have them move for 150cc, Mirror, & 200cc just so it works out for all players.

It is kinda obvious the reason they removed the car's moving animation was because they thought it be to hard and frustrating for younger kids with or without autorun and/or smart steering turned on.

I’m fine without the cars. My issue is that it just feels so cramped. You can easily bonk your head on the ceiling on 200 and even 150cc, and the turns seem to come out of nowhere. Whatever happened to those really satisfying metal turns that I enjoyed on the Wii? This is not something that can be fixed with a simple patch, but it’s fine, as there are plenty of great tracks on the DLC already. It’s just a blow to nostalgia at this point…

Those talking about them taking out the Miis, that was to be expected since - until very recently - they really gave Miis a de-push and shoved them into the background. Most Switch users (save for the diehard fans) have one Mii per user on the system, so single players like me only have one in total. And you can have a profile without even having a Mii at all on your system. The game would have a significantly smaller pool of Miis to draw from than back on the Wii, so replacing them with Shy Guys made more sense.

If one minor change in a so-so board has garnered this much ire, I can't wait to see the paragraphs long think pieces we will get about the other 47 tracks.

It's not only the cars for me, it's also the missing arches on the jump before them, which would have provided a reason to actually steer your glider to avoid them.

This isn't a technical problem, it's a poor design choice. Between Coconut Mall and the missing turns on Sky Garden, it's like they're trying to make some tracks as frictionless as possible. That's boring. Auto-steering already exists if a track is too difficult.

@WoomyNNYes I've found shaking the controller to buffer tricks a much more reliable option when taking those specific trick areas than pressing the button

I still can't fathom how anyone can defend this DLC. 48 tracks or not, they're so poorly implemented, lazy, and lack the quality and effort put into MK8's original tracks.

I never want to play on any of these courses but now you're forced to if you play online. IMO, Nintendo's ruined the MK8 experience and lowered the quality of the game substantially by implementing these ported, low quality mobile game courses.

You'd think with all the money this game has made that they would create new courses like they did with the original DLC, but it seems highly likely that each of these are going to be ports from Tour. I guess Nintendo chose quantity over quality

@johnvboy if Mario Kart 8 was released with tracks of this quality then it wouldn't have had such rave reviews or sold this well for this long IMO. Quantity doesn't equal quality, I believe this was purely thrown together for the sake of adding something else to their overpriced and highly mocked subscription plan.

@nocdaes "free", for people spending hundreds of dollars over a few years to rent archaic games released at a slow pace, or for anyone willing to spend $25 up front. That's not my definition of free.

Fair enough, but as I said I owned the game on the Wii U and now on the Switch, and I personally do not see the new DLC tracks as all that bad, yes they have a different look to them, but that does not equate to poor quality etc.

Nintendo are giving the owners of the game what they wanted. DLC tracks, and the Tour content, which many one here complained, that it was unfair that the mobile game was getting all the updates.

My mate literally spends more on a boxer shorts subscription than NSO...

They should at least make the cars spawn in different locations each time so you can't memorize their position

Maybe they finally paid for the gas for once.

I had Expansion Pass anyway, so it's not so much a complaint, but maaaan the new tracks are underwhelming. I don't think I appreciated how much the crazy elevations and hover collisions in the base game (incl, the original dlc) add to the excitement.

When they announced these waves it felt like they were giving this game the love it deserved given it's still a massive selling point, but the reality is, it's lip service.

Coconut Mall should've been a part of Mario Kart 8 in the first place, without the need of it being dlc. And to me, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe version is easily the best version since the lack of cars lowers the difficulty quite a bit.

The Tour tracks aren't necessarily the definitive editions to port over

Coconut Mall is easily the most disappointing of the DLC line. The lack of moving cars at the end stretch. The escalators look and play very differently than on the Wii. The Wii version also featured Mii characters standing around in the Mall, this Mall in turn has only a couple NPCs. And overall the general look of the Mall just even seems better on the Wii original. I'd say fix a few details like the cars at the least, and then if nothing else let us know when the next DLC will land. To be on schedule it should be by July at the latest.

Personally, I prefer the static cars. The cars move so quickly in MK Wii that it's too much of a matter of chance rather than skill as to whether you'll crash into one.

What they really need to bring back is the transparent ramp at the top of the mall.

@BulbasaurusRex : The moving cars weren't based on luck at all. Like the escalators, they're timed, and are quite easy to avoid if you're attentive.

@Silly_G No, they aren't! They move so fast that even on 50 CC it's mostly luck as to whether any human player can avoid them. If you try to time them, they'll often either move into your path before you expect them to do or fail to move out of your path until after you expect them to do so at the speeds both of you are traveling.
