The Nintendo Direct last week went out with a bang - revealing Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was coming to Switch this September.
Now that the secret is out, the game has been rated by the classification board in Australia. It's received a classification of 'M' for 'Mature' and contains "fantasy themes and violence". This 'M' rating lines up with the local ratings given to Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
And here's a bit about the game, in case you missed the announcement last week:
"A vast world awaits in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the next game in the acclaimed RPG series from developer MONOLITHSOFT. Players will step into the roles of protagonists Noah and Mio amid turmoil between the hostile nations of Keves and Agnus. Six characters hailing from those nations will take part in a grand tale with “life” as its central theme. Explore a new world that will connect the futures of both Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, launching for Nintendo Switch in September 2022."

For those of you about to start worrying Xeno 2 also got an M rating in Australia
Edit: Haha, didn't realize the article explicitly said that, lesson learned, read more carefully
@FroZtedFlakerZz If I remember correctly, an Australian M is pretty much their equivalent of T in America.
@ReaperMelia I believe so, strange how much things can differ.
This definitely means the ice rabbit lady is back
@ReaperMelia @FroZtedFlakerZz Yeah the Australian 'M' is not recommended for children under 15, however it is just a recommendation. The next one up is MA-15 which is an actual restriction, being restricted to people over the age of 15.
Really hyped about this gem.
Rated M for Money at the ready.
Come on EB, put up a Limited Edition so I can throw money at it.
Still haven't opened my XC LE yet, but I'm not missing out on this even if it sits there for another 3 years.
M is given to a bunch of things which really aren’t that ‘Mature’, so it really doesn’t matter that much. I mean they have the same rating to BotW.
In an eyebrow raising part of it, 3 got a Very Mild rating on the Sex category. The rest of the series have the same rating across the board and had None in the Sex category. Until now...what is there kissing or something in 3...?
@Freek They probably won't put up a limited edition until it's announced, which'll be when the game gets a release date.
September seems so far away
@SwitchVogel according to Reddit folks, XC2 didn't even have this game's "very mild impact: sex" rating claim, so the ice rabbit lady may be back with a vengeance.
@RobHarli characters will hold hands, I bet.
This game will have my full attention when it launches. The two first ones are sooo good!
I most certainly am looking forward to Xenoblade Chronicles 3 but it's sort of a shame Xenoblade Chronicles X didn't get a Switch port for people who missed out on it though.
There's Been a few articles about Xenoblade lately and its really getting me hyped for this, I need to keep this excitement under control for like another 6 months lol.
I've tried to start the original game like 5 times already and i always get overwhelmed with sidequests or distracted by other games. Now that there is three or technically 4 of em including Xenoblade chrononicles x i really need to commit to finishing them.
@Truegamer79 They are well worth your time. XC1 is my favorite game story of all time, and tied with BotW and XCX for my favorite game full stop. If you have XC:DE on Switch, the quest tracking makes the side quests significantly more manageable. Just go slow, take your time and enjoy it, and try not to get overwhelmed. Played to completing all the sidequests, it's about a 100 - 125 hour adventure. More if you want to level every playable character all the way with arts and skills and whatnot. But the main reason I think it's worth it is the story is amazing and has plenty of "feels" moments, and the exploration and combat gameplay are simply amazing. I hope you give it another go. Good luck! 😁
Count me among the number who are massively excited for XC3.
@Debo626
I'm definitely going to try finishing the original at least before Chronicles 3 comes out. I just started another playthrough after they announced it. This time I'm not stopping until it's done. I've put it off far too long.
I stare off into the distance, waiting for my beloved XCX to get a port or sequel. Still, I continue to wait. Longing for what could never be....
@MegaMari0 Myself as well. Le sigh. 😫 I played over 900 hours of XCX on the Wii U and I'd buy and play it again in a heartbeat if they'd port it. Maybe next year? If the Switch is really at the "midpoint" of its life, there's still hope.
@Truegamer79 I hope you love it. The story and characters are so well done it's like playing through a really good anime with a huge open world. Have you played XC2 yet? If not, and it's too much, I've advised a gamer friend of mine to watch the cutscenes on YT to catch up with the story before XC3; might be an option for you too if time is in short supply. 😁
How do you rate a game that isn't even out for 7 more months? Not weeks, months. How much of a game has to be done to rate it? Does Australia usually rate games more than half a year before they release?🤷
Can one of y'all speed up time so we can get to september please? 😂
@Debo626 my Wii U's gamepad died and I was never able to finish the game. So I had to make due with watching the cutscenes. In my defense, my son(3yr old at the time) said the gamepad was dirty and ran it under the kitchen faucet. It survived a few days after before dying. I tried self repairs, even bought a new screen for it but alas, it wasn't enough. Frankly to put forth the effort to get a "new" Wii u isn't worth it. I will hold out hope as you've mentioned.
@MegaMari0 "F" I'm so sorry to hear about your gamepad. Gotta hand it to your son though; he did try to be considerate and do the right thing. I'm sure it was a sad day at your house though. I'd agree; trying to get a new Wii U at this point wouldn't be a good investment. Their price has skyrocketed since there's only 13.5-and-a-bit million out there. Watching the cutscenes is an ok substitute I guess for playing through it, but the story wasn't even really the point of XCX; it was the exploration and combat gameplay. I hope for your sake they do port it to Switch or a future system so you get the chance to enjoy it all the way through. In the meantime, hopefully XC3 is as good as the first two.
@Debo626
I haven't played Xenoblade 2 yet but I might get to that one some day. Seems like the original is all anybody ever talks about. It must be really amazing.
I actually started playing Xenoblade Chronicles a few weeks before XC3 was announced, so luck must be on my side!
For a direct that I thought was supposed to focus on the first half of 2022 only, lots of games, including this one, are flagged for second half. Makes me nervous that we never heard about Zelda or bayonetta- I guess these will be Christmas releases
@Truegamer79 The first one is my favorite, but the second is an awesome game too. The story is really good as well, and like the first, has plenty of emotion and heart. I'd at least check out the story cutscenes before going through 3 if it were me, since there are some confirmed returning characters from each game. Knowing their backstory might provide some context to their actions in 3.
@Truegamer79 Depends on what you're looking for. IMO, Xenoblade 1 had a mature story and the environments are beautiful while Xenoblade 2 had more enjoyable character arcs and more satisfying gameplay (shame about the ***** tutorial though...). Both games I ended up taking long hiatuses from because the tutorials confused the crap out of me. However, I had the time of my life when I went back to them.
This year does look like a year where Switch games will be plentiful, especially rpg's.
From the games announced so far xenoblade 3 won't make my top 5 must buys, unless the others get poor reviews.
Presumably Xenoblade Chronicles X was rated X?
Can September get here already? It looks beyond amazing. The first two are my favorite RPGs of all time, and this looks amazing too.
@Truegamer79 I like the second one more, but the first one is a classic.
Get ready to have you login ready to order those limited edition once they get announced or else you'll suffer at the hands of scalpers later on.
@michellelynn0976 I agree the 1st game is so powerful at what it brought & it's my number 1 RPG, 2nd is Chrono Trigger & 3rd if FF6.
@Truegamer79 It is. Get on to playing it before it's too late.
@MegaMari0 That's why I bought a extra gamepad the 2nd year of Wii u life back then. The original still works & every now n then I clean it. I don't let dust settle as I make sure I blow off the vents & clean the usb HDD when I have the digital games on. I still have some physical games but yeah call Nin up & ask them about what happened. Maybe they can help & if not put the gamepad in a big pot of rice & top it & put it in 2 bags & tie it up & cover it in a pile of clothes for a week to see if it will fix it by drying up all the water inside.
Let me know if it helps, gd luck.
@CGSasuke it's too late for me man. My niece now has my leftover Wii u console without the gamepad. I gave it up as a loss. It's been years since then. I could try and buy a gamepad on ebay or something and see if she still has the console but it's a stretch. Thanks for the suggestions.
Np. Hope luck is there for you👍.
@CGSasuke I can't wait for 3 coming out. I am so excited.
@michellelynn0976 Same here. I want a time machine to pick it up early lol.
@CGSasuke You read my mind. 🤣🤣
