Wingspan is a rather lovely deck-building game on Switch, producing a digital take on the popular and award-winning board game. In our review of late 2020 we gave it plenty of praise, albeit at the time a few porting quirks perhaps held it back a little.
It's now been on Nintendo's system for a little while, then, and the pleasing news is that a major expansion is on the way - Nintendo's own YouTube channel shared the trailer above. Scheduled for 5th May, the European Expansion will seemingly add a broad range of new cards:
Discover new cards featuring beautiful, charming birds. Learn new strategies and use the newest bird powers to win!
Your humble scribe will admit to somewhat overlooking this when it launched (despite it actually featuring in an Indie World broadcast), but its presentation and concept certainly seem very appealing.

I have one thing to say. Wow. (this is sarcasm )
Wingspan the board game is great. The Switch version is good. The European Edition DLC seems a bit different than the European Expansion for the board game (with respect to the environments, although that appears to be just cosmetic). I'll be picking this up if it's $10 or less (hoping for $5).
So wingspan is great. Unfortunately there are more than a few broken, OP, birds that if someone gets early own they will almost definitely win.
Finally! I've been waiting for this expansion for quite a while now
I hope the add the other expansion with the additional gameplay elements in soon. I usually play the switch version because nobody else likes to play it with me. 😔 I should try and learn the automata version to play the board game by myself.
@Cheez The Ruddy Duck, by any chance?
I own the board game, but have never played it. I somehow know somebody who knows somebody who made it but I can’t remember how
@chapu2006 you better believe it. And don't get me started on the Ravens and Killdeer. In some ways they make the game great because you can get a wonderful engine. In other ways their horrible because they tend to make games lopsided.
Haven’t played Wingspan yet (video or board).
Stonemaier Games does make my favourite board game though, Scythe! Lots of fun and can be played solo.
I rarely win and I mostly stumble through the game, but I still find so much enjoyment from Wingspan. I'll definitely be down for some new birds.
Can't wait. Ultimately the board game plays easier, but this is great for me while traveling and I want to play solo or online. I can't say the board game's automa mode interests me, but I suppose I'm glad it's there.
"Oh, yeah, an African swallow maybe, but not a European swallow, that's my point."
I actually learned how to play the board game by playing the Switch version, and the digital iterations have the added bonus of actual bird songs and animations when you place a card. It's a great, relaxing, and deceptively deep strategic card game for 1-5 players (in any combination of human and AI) that I highly recommend, in any version, and I am definitely looking forward to the European Expansion as well as any others that Monster Couch might port down the line.
Looking forward to this expansion. Have not played the board game only the Switch version. They did a great job with it.
I'm definitely going to pick that up.
